Pioneering NFL Sportscaster Phyllis George Dies At Age 70

Phyllis George, a former Miss America who became a female sportscasting pioneer on the CBS program The NFL Today, as well as serving as the first lady of Kentucky, has passed away at the age of 70.  A family spokeswoman said George died Thursday at a Lexington, Kentucky hospital after a long fight with a blood disorder.

Ms. George was Miss America in 1971, then joined Brent Musburger and Irv Cross in 1975 on The NFL Today. George spent three seasons on the live pregame show, returned in 1980 and left in 1983. “Phyllis George was special. Her smile lit up millions of homes for the NFL Today,“ Musburger tweeted. “Phyllis didn’t receive nearly enough credit for opening the sports broadcasting door for the dozens of talented women who took her lead and soared.”

George was briefly married to Hollywood producer Robert Evans in the mid-1970s and to John Y Brown Jr from 1979-98. Brown owned Kentucky Fried Chicken and the NBA’s Boston Celtics and served as the governor of Kentucky.

Her children, Lincoln Tyler George Brown and CNN White House correspondent Pamela Ashley Brown, released a joint statement, saying: “For many, Mom was known by her incredible accomplishments as the pioneering female sportscaster, 50th Miss America and first lady.  But this was all before we were born and never how we viewed Mom. To us, she was the most incredible mother we could ever ask for, and it is all of the defining qualities the public never saw, especially against the winds of adversity, that symbolise how extraordinary she is more than anything else. The beauty so many recognized on the outside was a mere fraction of her internal beauty, only to be outdone by an unwavering spirit that allowed her to persevere against all the odds.”

Whistleblower Says Americans “Need To Be Told The Truth” Regarding COVID-19 Risks

On Thursday, a former Health and Human Services official testified before Congress that the Trump administration’s timeline for a coronavirus vaccine is too optimistic, saying there’s “no plan” to mass produce and distribute one.

The official, Dr. Rick Bright, told the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on health that predicting a vaccine will be ready in 12 to 18 months assumes that “everything goes perfectly,” adding, “We’ve never seen everything go perfectly.” Bright also said he had warned the administration about shortages of personal protective equipment, criticizing President Donald Trump and senior officials for minimizing the outbreak at the start.

“I believe Americans need to be told the truth,” Bright said. “We did not forewarn people. We did not train people. We did not educate them on social distancing and wearing a mask as we should have in January and February. All those forewarnings, all those educational opportunities, for the American public could have had an impact in further slowing this outbreak and saving more lives.”

Bright also warned that the administration needs to develop a comprehensive, well-implemented national response plan heading into the fall, adding that the coronavirus outbreak could combine with the seasonal flu later this year to create “the darkest winter in modern history.”

CDC Releases New Guidelines On How States Can Safely Reopen

The federal government’s top experts on infectious diseases on Thursday released a new plan on how states can safely allow businesses and schools to reopen their doors during the coronavirus pandemic. Lawmakers and state officials have been asking the federal government for more detailed suggestions on when schools, churches and businesses can reopen.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance is voluntary; however it is the most specific instruction yet from the federal government on how not to trigger an outbreak. Large parts of the country have been in lockdown for two months, as health officials have advised Americans to stay home, limit social contact and shop only for essentials.

Previous guidance suggested that certain institutions move forward once they can document fewer cases or positive tests in a 14-day period, among other recommendations.
