Pittsburgh Penguins Forward Dominik Simon Out At Least Six Months Due To Shoulder Surgery

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Dominik Simon will be out at least six to seven months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the team announced on Thursday.

Simon initially hurt the shoulder in a loss to the San Jose Sharks on Feb. 29 and underwent surgery on April 29. The surgery would preclude Simon from returning if the 2019-2020 NHL season resumes. The league is currently on “pause” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 25-year-old Simon had seven goals and 15 assists in 64 games this season for Pittsburgh.

Singer Bryan Adams Apologizes For His Anti-China Coronavirus Comments

Bryan Adams is apologizing for comments he made on Instagram about the origins of the coronavirus. The 60-year-old Canadian singer shared a video of himself performing his 1983 song “Cuts Like a Knife” along with a harsh caption that seemingly had Adams blaming China for the pandemic.

“Thanks to some f—ing bat eating, wet market animal selling, virus making greedy bastards, the whole world is now on hold, not to mention the thousands that have suffered or died from this virus,” he wrote. “My message to them other than ‘thanks a f—ing lot’ is go vegan.”

Adams is one of several vegans who have tried to blame the pandemic on meat-eating, and though the People for the Ethical Treatments of Animals (PETA) released a statement in support of Adams, his comments prompted plenty of online backlash.  Subsequently, Adams posted another video of himself performing “Into the Fire,” and apologized to those who were offended by his original post. “Apologies to any and all that took offense to my posting yesterday,” he wrote. “No excuse, I just wanted to have a rant about the horrible animal cruelty in these wet-markets being the possible source of the virus, and promote veganism. I have love for all people and my thoughts are with everyone dealing with this pandemic around the world.”

Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson Reveals He Has ‘Incurable Lung Disease’

Jethro Tull legend Ian Anderson has revealed that he has COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), which he says in an “an incurable lung disease”. Anderson shared the news from his appearance on this week’s episode of The Big Interview on AXS TV.

He shared, “I’m going to tell you something I’ve never told anybody in public before, I am suffering from an incurable lung disease which I was diagnosed with a couple of years back.

“I do struggle. I have what are called exacerbations, periods when I get an infection that turns into severe bronchitis and I have maybe two or three weeks when it’s really a tough job to go out there on stage and play.

“Fingers crossed, I’ve gone 18 months now without an exacerbation and I’m on medication. If I’m kept in a reasonably pollution-free environment in terms of air quality, I do okay. But my days are numbered. It’s not yet at the point that it affects my day to day life, I can still run for the bus.”

Ian went on to describe the disease. Saying that it best known as “COPD, where you lose some of the ability of your lungs to give you enough oxygen. I spend 50 years of my life on stage among those wretched things that I call smoke machines.

“Today, they’re politely referred to as hazers, as if they’re somehow innocent and not damaging to you lungs. I really do believe that’s a very significant part of the problem I have.”

Wisconsin Supreme Court Blocks State’s ‘Stay-At-Home’ Order

The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down the state’s stay-at-home order during the coronavirus pandemic as “unlawful, invalid and unenforceable” after finding the state’s health commissioner exceeded her authority. In a 4-3 ruling, the court called State Department of Health head Andrea Palm’s directive, known as Emergency Order 28, a “vast seizure of power.”

The order directed all individuals present within the state of Wisconsin to stay at home or at their place of residence, subject only to exceptions allowed by Palm, the ruling says. The order, which was set to run until May 26, also put in place travel restrictions and business restrictions, along with threats of jail time or fines for those who don’t comply.

The decision comes as a result of the legislature suing the health department, charging Palm’s directives were an overreach and asking the court to grant relief that gives the legislature a “seat at the table” in the rule-making process.

There have been almost 11,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Wisconsin and 421 deaths.

FBI Arrest NASA Researcher For Failing To Report Ties To China

FBI agents arrested an Arkansas professor who allegedly failed to disclose his ties to Chinese entities during the course of securing funding for a NASA research project, the Justice Department announced.

Simon Saw-Teong Ang, 63, of Fayetteville, was arrested by FBI agents and charged with wire fraud. Authorities alleged Ang, an electrical engineering professor and researcher at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville (UA) since 1988, defrauded NASA and the university “by failing to disclose that he held other positions at a Chinese university and Chinese companies” in violation of conflict of interest policies, according to an FBI special agent’s affidavit in support of the complaint.

“Ang made false statements and failed to report his outside employment to UA, which enabled Ang to keep his UA job as well as obtain [US government] research funding,” according to the affidavit filed in US District Court for the Western District of Arkansas.

As part of his research, authorities said Ang received several grants and contracts from federal agencies, including NASA. The affidavit states that, while working for the university, “Ang’s close ties to the Chinese government and employment with numerous Chinese companies would have made him ineligible to receive grants issued by United States government agencies.”

If convicted, federal officials say Ang faces a statutory maximum punishment of 20 years in prison.

Major League Soccer Looking At Having All Teams Play In Orlando Florida

Major League Soccer is planing to return, with the league proposing a summer tournament in Florida involving all 26 team. The proposal calls for players and coaches to head to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando to begin training on June 1, with the tournament — involving matches without fans — set to begin three to four weeks later.

The proposal would need to be approved by the MLS Players Association, which is currently in negotiations with MLS over salary cuts. The league’s latest proposal asks for a 20% cut across the board, plus other unspecified monetary concessions.

MLS shut down on March 12. Recently, some teams began holding voluntary, individual workouts for players, subject to their player safety plan being approved by the league.
