Belmont Stakes To Run June 20th Without Spectators

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) said on Tuesday that the Belmont Stakes will be run on June 20 without spectators amid the COVID-19 pandemic, marking the first time the race will be the opening leg of U.S. thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. NYRA President Dave O’Rourke said in a statement: “While this will certainly be a unique running of this historic race, we are grateful to be able to hold the Belmont Stakes in 2020. Fans across the country can look forward to a day of exceptional thoroughbred racing at a time when entertainment and sports are so important to providing a sense of normalcy.”

The race, which will be held two weeks later than originally scheduled, has traditionally been the longest race of the Triple Crown series. However this year, the race will be shortened to 1-1/8 miles from 1-1/2 miles to account for 3-year-old thoroughbreds in training, who would usually have built up their endurance by the third leg of the triple crown.

The new date for the Belmont Stakes follows the previously announced rescheduling of the Kentucky Derby to Sept. 5 from May 2 and the Preakness Stakes to Oct. 3 from May 16.As the traditional third leg of racing’s Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes is widely known as the “Test of the Champion” and has showcased many of history’s greatest thoroughbreds.

China Announces $2 Billion Coronavirus Aid Pledge During WHO Meeting

On Monday, China’s President Xi Jinping said Monday that China will contribute $2 billion in aid to combat the coronavirus in other countries, after the pandemic spread beyond its borders.

The funds will be distributed over two years, and are intended to “help with Covid-19 response, and with economic and social development in affected countries, especially developing countries,” Xi said at a convening of the World Health Assembly.

Xi defended his country’s handling of the pandemic, which has been sharply criticized by U.S. officials and other countries, insisting that China has been prompt and transparent in sharing information about the virus with the WHO. “We have shared control and treatment experience with the world without reservation,” Xi said in his speech. “We have done everything in our power to support and assist countries in need.”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last month the U.S. “strongly believed” China flouted World Health Organization rules by neglecting to report on the outbreak in a “timely fashion,” and did not report on the community spread of the virus “for a month until it was in every province inside of China.”

President Trump Reveals He’s Been Taking Unproven Covid-19 Drug Hydroxychloroquine

On Monday, President Donald Trump told reporters he’s been taking hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malaria drug he’s touted as a possible treatment for COVID-19. Trump said he asked the White House doctor if he could take the unproven treatment despite having no symptoms, adding he’s been taking a pill a day for about a week-and-a-half. “I’m still fine,” he said, referring to possible dangerous side effects.

The president said he’s received “a lot of positive letters” offering good feedback of hydroxychloroquine and insisted even if it’s not effective, he claimed, “You’re not going to get sick or die.” When surprised reporters asked if he were taking it because he’s exhibited symptoms, the president replied, “Zero symptoms.”  He added, “I take a pill every day. At some point, I’ll stop. What I’d like to do is I’d like to have the cure and/or the vaccine. And that will happen, I think, very soon,” he added.

The FDA last month specifically warned against taking hydroxychloroquine “outside of a hospital setting or a clinical trial due to risk of heart rhythm problems.”  They also warned of serious side effects of the drug currently unapproved to treat COVID-19, though touted by the White House.

USGA Eliminates Qualifying For U.S. Open

The United States Golf Association announced on Monday that the U.S. Open will be held without qualifying this year, with the field “filled entirely through exemptions.” Golfers who are exempt from qualifying competitions include those who have won the U.S. Open tournament in the last decade and top-10 finishers from the tournament’s previous year, for example, or those who qualify through a special exemption set by the USGA.

The tournament was postponed from its June date to Sept. 17-20 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, as the coronavirus outbreak rattled the world of professional sports and shredded the golf calendar. The USGA said that while the tournament was moving forward, qualifying was “not viable” due to safety concerns.

Live golf is slowly returning, with the PGA Tour set to resume next month.
