New York, California And Texas Governors In Support Of Return Of Pro Sports

Governors from New York, California and Texas said on Monday that professional sports could resume in their respective states in the near future. All major sports have been shut down since March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said during his daily news conference, “Hockey, basketball, baseball, football — whoever can reopen — we’re a ready, willing and able partner.  think this is in the best interest of all the people and the best interest of the state of New York.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said sports could return “without spectators and with modification and very prescriptive conditions” if the number of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in the state continue to decrease.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said professional sports without fans could resume there at the end of May.

Major League Baseball is already working on a plan to restart the season, and the NFL released its schedule earlier this month.

‘Riverdale’ Creator Confirms Season 5 Time Jump

Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa says the show will have a significant time jump in Season 5. The writer and producer said in an interview that the jump will take place early on in the CW series’ fifth season. Riverdale Season 4 ended early due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Season 5 will pick up with three episodes that were intended for the end of the fourth season. “We’ve been talking and planning on doing a time jump,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “So what we’re doing is picking up right where we left off for the first three episodes, and then doing a time jump… after those three episodes.”  He also teased a “big mystery” to come, saying, “when we come back in Season 5, we’ll have a very big mystery to unravel and a lot of relationship stuff to sort out,” he said. Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed the time jump will take place after important events like prom and high school graduation in the early episodes. The time jump is expected to cover several years and skip the time when the characters would be separated during college.

Riverdale is based on the Archie Comics comic series. The series stars KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge and Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones.

11 Firefighters Injured In Downtown Los Angeles Explosion

An explosion Saturday at an oil manufacturer in downtown Los Angeles injured 11 firefighters who had gone inside and on the roof to try to control a fire. Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott said “one significant explosion” shook the neighborhood around 6:30 p.m. Firefighters inside had to run through a wall of flames he estimated as 30 feet high and wide. Some of the fleeing firefighters were on fire and tore off their protective equipment and left it on the sidewalk, along with melted helmets, Scott said.

All 11 firefighters suffered burns ranging from minor to serious. Three were listed as critical condition, and two of them were on ventilators. However, all were expected to survive.  “Things could have been so much worse,” said Los Angeles Fire Department Medical Director Dr. Marc Eckstein, who works at the hospital and helped treat the injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Navy Grants First Waiver Allowing Transgender Officer To Remain In Uniform

The U.S. Navy granted its first waiver that will allow a transgender service member to continue serving despite a 2019 policy that would have seen the sailor discharged. The naval officer, identified in the case as Jane Doe, served nearly 10 years in uniform as a surface warfare officer before being confronted with the likelihood of being kicked out under the new rules.

Doe filed her complaint  in March in Massachusetts federal district court, with representation coming from the GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) and the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR). According to the members of her legal team, Doe first came out as transgender after being diagnosed with gender dysphoria in June 2019. The new guidelines, however, went into effect in April 2019, leaving Doe without protection under the policy’s grandfather clause.

The new policy was put into effect on the heels of a 2017 tweet from President Donald Trump that declared the military would no longer allow “transgender individuals to serve in any capacity,” a decision, the president wrote, came after “consultation with my Generals.”  Trump’s decision reversed a 2016 policy implemented by the Obama administration that allowed transgender individuals to serve openly in the armed force.

Navy officials confirmed the waiver’s approval, and noted that Jane Doe’s gender marker will be updated in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System. The officer can now adhere to grooming and uniform standards in accordance to her preferred gender, Navy officials said.

Walt Harris Loses Match Against Alistair Overeem By TKO In Emotional Return To UFC

In his first UFC fight since the death of his stepdaughter, Walt Harris was defeated by Alistair Overeem in the second round of UFC’s Fight Night main event on Saturday.  It was an emotional return for the heavyweight fighter known as The Big Ticket, who pointed to the sky and proudly showed off a “Fighting for Aniah” t-shirt as he entered the arena.

Harris was a slight favorite and the sentimental choice as he stepped into the octagon for the first time since his 19-year-old daughter, Aniah Blanchard, was killed in Alabama. Harris (13-8) looked as though he would notch his 14th career knockout when he dropped Overeem in the opening round, but Overeem dominated the rest of the way. Overeem (46-18) sent Harris to the mat for the final time with an unblocked combination early in the second, from which Harris never recovered.  Overeem shared a moment with Harris on the mat.

Harris thanked the UFC, his team and his community while fighting back tears. “I’m sorry I didn’t get the W for you tonight,” Harris said. “You’ve been like my family through everything, and I’m so grateful. … Y’all at home watching, I’m sorry. I’ll be back better, I promise you. You haven’t seen the last of The Big Ticket. I’m going to go home, recover. I’m going to heal emotionally and physically, and I promise you I’ll be better.”
