Police Killing Of Rayshard Brooks In Atlanta Officially Ruled A Homicide

On Sunday, authorities in Georgia ruled that the fatal police shooting of Rayshard Brooks was a homicide. Brooks, 27, died after he was shot twice in the back on Friday, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office said in a statement. Brooks was shot after a confrontation with two Atlanta police officers in the parking lot of a Wendy’s fast food restaurant.

Police had been summoned there on a report of a man sleeping in his car in the drive-through. Brooks struggled with the officers after they administered a field sobriety test and tried to take him into custody, and surveillance video appears to show Brooks running away from the officers with a stun gun that he’d taken from one of them While running, Brooks appeared to turn around and point the weapon at police. but according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, “At that point, the Atlanta officer reaches down and retrieves his weapon from his holster, discharges it, strikes Mr. Brooks there on the parking lot, and he goes down.”

Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields resigned over the shooting, saying in a statement that “it is time for the city to move forward and build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.” Garrett Rolfe, the officer who shot Brooks, was fired; and a second officer, Devin Brosnan, was placed on administrative duty.

California Leaders Request Probe Into Black Man’s Hanging Death

The apparent hanging death of a black man in the Los Angeles area is being investigated, after demands among residents and celebrities about the initial finding of suicide had been brought into question. The body of 24-year-old Robert Fuller was found near Palmdale City Hall Wednesday afternoon by a passerby, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“He was hanging from a tree,” said police during a press conference last week.  “Personnel from the adjacent fire station responded and determined that he had passed. Although the investigation is ongoing, it appears that Mr. Fuller has tragically died by suicide.” Someone in the audience said, “That’s a lie. That’s a lie.”  By Saturday, demonstrators gathered outside City Hall to demand a thorough investigation. Protesters gathered at the tree where Fuller’s body was found, and members of Fuller’s family and a sheriff’s investigator on the case said there was no indication he left a suicide note.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said she has asked California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to conduct an independent investigation. The county coroner’s office said in its own statement that a definitive cause of death has been deferred pending further investigation. Questions about Fuller’s death led demonstrators to gather Friday outside City Hall, and the social media hashtag #JusticeForRobertFuller was being used to bring attention to the case.  Kim Kardashian West urged her Twitter followers to endorse a Change.org petition calling for “a thorough and proper investigation.”

PGA Tour Returns With Daniels Berger’s Victory At Charles Schwab Challenge At Colonial

After three months away because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Daniel Berger had a huge day on Sunday with a victory at Colonial. It was the first PGA Tour event since March 12 when the spread of COVID-19 shut down golf and all other sports. The PGA Tour returned to golf at the Charles Schwab Challenge, not allowing spectators for the opening five events in its return.

Berger beat Collin Morikawa in a one-hole playoff. After both golfers finished the fourth round at 15-under, they played the 17th hole as a playoff. Berger tapped in for par and Morikawa’s putt to tie it from just outside 3 feet lipped out.
