Pearl Jam Release Uncensored Version Of ‘Jeremy’ Video

In recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 5, Pearl Jam released for the first time the version of the “Jeremy” that MTV refused to show.

Jeremy is from Pearl Jam’s 1991 debut Ten, inspired by the death of 16-year-old Jeremy Wade Delle, who shot himself in front of his English class and teacher in Richardson, Texas earlier that same year. Eddie Vedder had read about the tragedy and remembered an incident from seventh grade where a fellow student came into class with a gun and shot a fish tank. Vedder took elements of both and wrote the lyrics to Jeremy.  Pearl Jam’s uncensored video ended with a shirtless Jeremy, having been bullied by his classmates, walking into the room, throws an apple to the teacher, pulls out a gun and sticks it into his mouth.

At the time of the song and video’s release, MTV balked at the sight of Jeremy putting the gun in his mouth, and it was removed, although the final images of the kids remained. The edited video led to speculation as to what happened in the climactic scene — whether Jeremy shot himself, his classmates, or both. The video for Jeremy took home four trophies, including Video of the Year, at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards. Pearl Jam didn’t make another video for six years.

The Ghost Inside Part Ways With Bassist Jim Riley Due To Racist Comments

The Ghost Inside have parted ways with bassist Jim Riley. The bassist was accused of making racist slurs five years ago, and while he issued a statement on Twitter, he has now departed the band.

TGI said in a statement on social media: “The Ghost Inside was born from a scene of forward thinking, understanding and progressiveness. Our music and message has always been one of hope and finding that light at the end of the tunnel. Racism and bigotry of any kind stifle that journey the light. It closes and locks doors that need to be broken open.

“We have decided to part ways with bassist Jim Riley. While we didn’t hear these words spoken directly from his mouth, we did hear mutterings of the incident. At the time we thought this to be just a rumor, but it offended and hurt a community. A community we are meant to bring together. We should’ve spoken up back then and we didn’t, we should’ve dug deeper. We acknowledge that we were silent. We are self educating and growing and learning as individuals. We are here to say that we as a band fully condemn racism and support the black community in the fight against systemic racism.”

The departure of Jim comes one day after The Ghost Inside released their fifth studio album, the first new music from TGI since the devastating bus crash that left two dead and the band seriously injured.

Justin Bieber Vows To Use His Platform To Be Part Of The Change For Racial Injustice

Justin Bieber is “committed to using his platform” to speak up about racial injustice, and posted a short statement on Instagram making the promise.

“I am inspired by Black culture,” Bieber wrote. “I have benefited off of Black culture. My style, how I sing, dance, perform, and my fashion have all been influenced and inspired by Black culture. I am committed to using my platform from this day forward to learn, to speak up about racial injustice and systemic oppression, and to identify ways to be a part of much needed change.”

Shortly after the death of George Floyd, Justin and Hailey held a conversation about white privilege. “People get nervous to say the wrong thing, and I think this conversation is so healthy because it’s not about saying the wrong thing,” Hailey said. “Even if we do say the wrong thing, getting corrected in love and respect and saying, ‘I’m telling you this because we respect each other and I want you to understand.’”

Bieber added, “I’ve been feeling shame in the sense of like, Why did it take these men being killed for me to almost take a blanket over my eyes. Why now? I do feel bad when it comes to that.”

Facebook Begins Labeling ‘State-Controlled’ Media

Facebook has begun labeling content produced by media outlets it says are under state control, enacting a policy the social network first announced in October. Posts from at least 18 outlets including Russia Today, China’s People’s Daily and Iran’s Press TV now carry notices to users that they are “state-controlled media.” Ads from state-controlled publishers will also be labeled starting later this year. The labels will initially be shown to U.S. Facebook users and roll out to other countries over time.

In a blog post, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, wrote:  “We’re providing greater transparency into these publishers because they combine the influence of a media organization with the strategic backing of a state, and we believe people should know if the news they read is coming from a publication that may be under the influence of a government.”

Facebook will also begin barring state-controlled outlets from buying advertising in the U.S. later this summer. Gleicher said that decision was to provide an extra layer of protection against various types of foreign influence ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

Facebook’s decision to flag state-controlled media is part of the company’s broader effort to avoid a repeat of 2016, when the company failed to curb misinformation and foreign interference in the U.S. presidential election.

George Floyd Honored During Memorial Service As Protests Around The Country Continue

A memorial was held Thursday for George Floyd, the black man who died last week after a police officer pressed a knee into his neck while detaining him in Minneapolis, triggering protests across the country.

Artwork depicting Floyd saying, “I can breathe now” was placed in front of a golden casket and flower bouquets. Floyd’s brother Philonise shared memories of growing up together, saying, “All these people came to see my brother. And that’s amazing to me that he touched so many people’s hearts. Because he’s been touching our hearts. Everybody wants justice,” he continued, referring to those who have been protesting in the streets. “We want justice for George. He’s gonna get it!”

Mourners inside the North Central University sanctuary wore masks, some with pictures of Floyd on them. In a statement, the university said it took steps “to ensure appropriate measures will be in place for health and safety related to COVID-19.”

Floyd, 46, died May 25 after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned him to the ground. Video filmed by bystanders shows Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nearly 9 minutes. Floyd’s death set off nationwide protests against police brutality that have continued since the encounter.

Saints QB Drew Brees Issues Apology For Flag Comments

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees apologized on Thursday for comments he made that were “insensitive and completely missed the mark” when he reiterated his opposition to Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling during the national anthem in 2016.  Brees comments drew sharp criticism from fellow high-profile athletes and others in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Los Angeles Lakers great LeBron James, New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins and former NFL player Martellus Bennett were just some of the high-profile athletes to criticize Brees on their Twitter feeds.

Brees was asked Wednesday in an interview with Yahoo to revisit former NFL quarterback Kaepernick’s kneeling during the national anthem before games to bring awareness of police brutality and racial injustice, saying, “I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States. In many cases, it brings me to tears thinking about all that has been sacrificed, and not just in the military, but for that matter, those throughout the civil rights movements of the ’60s, and all that has been endured by so many people up until this point.”

However in an Instagram post Thursday, Brees apologized to his friends, teammates, New Orleans, the black community, the NFL community and “anyone I hurt with my comments yesterday.”  Brees added: “In an attempt to talk about respect, unity, and solidarity centered around the American flag and the national anthem, I made comments that were insensitive and completely missed the mark on the issues we are facing right now as a country. They lacked awareness and any type of compassion or empathy. Instead, those words have become divisive and hurtful and have misled people into believing that somehow I am an enemy. This could not be further from the truth, and is not an accurate reflection of my heart or my character.”

NFL Coaches And Trainers Allowed To Return To Team Facilities Today

The NFL informed teams on Thursday that coaching staffs will be permitted to return to team facilities and the maximum number of personnel allowed in those facilities will be increased to 100, beginning Friday.

The NFL anticipates that the San Francisco 49ers are the only team that will not be able to get to its facility Friday. “The team is aware and supportive of this plan and has been in communication with its local authorities to obtain all necessary permissions when available,” the league said.

All team facilities were closed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic but began to reopen last month. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell informed teams earlier this week that they must hold training camp at their main practice facilities because of the virus. Players are not expected to return to their team facilities until training camp.
