Record Store Day 2020 Includes New Releases From Britney Spears, Eminem, And More

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Record Store Day 2020 will look dramatically different this year. Typically a one-day event, this year’s Record Store Day will be spread across three days: Aug. 29, Sept. 26 and Oct. 24. As always, artists will drop special titles for Record Store Day that can be purchased at independent music stores across the country. The event was originally set for April 18 and then shifted to June 20 before the latest dates were revealed.

This year expected releases from such artists as Britney Spears, Eminem and many many morel. On September 26th, the re-release of Britney Spears’ “Oops!…I Did It Again” features remixes and B-sides from the 20-year-old album that helped make her a pop superstar. And on Oct. 24, look for “My Name Is”/”Bad Guys Always Die” from Eminem during the third and final record store day. Eminem released his latest album “Music To Be Murdered By” in January, and it was certified gold just two months later.

“Record Store Day will look very different this year, but supporting indie record stores may be more important than ever,” organizers say on the Record Store Day website. “We don’t know what sort of rules will be in place, or what sort of gatherings people will be in the mood for this year, so we’re focusing on the music and getting the really great titles on the RSD Official List this year into the stores and into your hands, in the most financially and socially responsible way.”

Independent Autopsy Rules George Floyd’s Death Was Homicide By Asphyxiation

An independent autopsy conducted regarding the killing of George Floyd found his death was a homicide and that he died of “asphyxiation from sustained pressure.” The autopsy said compression to Floyd’s neck and back as former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck and other officers knelt on his back led to a lack of blood flow to his brain and that he was “dead on the scene.”  A statement by the family’s lead attorney Ben Crump said, “The independent examiners found that weight on the back, handcuffs and positioning were contributory factors because they impaired the ability of Mr. Floyd’s diaphragm to function.”  Dr. Michael Baden, one of the pathologists who performed the independent autopsy said Floyd had no underlying medical problems that contributed to his death. “Police have this false impression that if you can talk, you can breathe. That’s not true,” said Baden.

An official autopsy released last week suggested that Floyd had underlying health conditions and “potential intoxicants in his system” that likely contributed to his death along with the police restraint.  Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder, with a criminal complaint stating that Chauvin had is knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in total and 2 minutes and 53 seconds after Floyd was unresponsive. Floyd’s family called for Chauvin to be charged with first-degree murder and for the other officers present to be charged in his death.

New York City Issues Curfew Amid Protests Following George Floyd Death

NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a curfew for New York City on Monday night, following four days of protests in response to the killing of George Floyd.  The curfew began at 11 pm Monday, and will continue until 5 am Tuesday morning, Cuomo announced. Cuomo did not indicate if the curfew will extend beyond Monday.  The governor also announced that the NYPD will increase its police presence on Monday night, with the number of officers jumping from 4,000 to 8,000.

“I stand behind the protestors and their message, but unfortunately there are people who are looking to distract and discredit this moment,” Cuomo said. “The violence and the looting has been bad for the city, the state, and this entire national movement, undermining and distracting from this righteous cause. While we encourage people to protest peacefully and make their voices heard, the safety of the general public is paramount and cannot be compromised.”

Mayor deBlasio said that while demonstrations have been “generally peaceful,” the incidents of violence that have accompanied them are undermining “the message of the moment.”

“It is too important and the message must be heard. Tonight, to protect against violence and property damage, the governor and I have decided to implement a citywide curfew,” said de Blasio. “The police commissioner and I have spoken at length about the incidents we’ve all seen in recent days where officers didn’t uphold the values of this city or the NYPD. We agree on the need for swift action.”

MLB Union Makes Counter-Proposal In Pay Dispute With League Owners

The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) has submitted a counter proposal to league owners, as negotiations about restarting the suspended 2020 season continue.

According to reports, the union is proposing a 114-game regular season that would run from June 30th to 31st October 31st, with all players given the opportunity to opt out of the season and to have their 2020 salaries deferred if the postseason were to be cancelled. MLBPA representatives are also said to have proposed an expanded playoff structure – rising from ten teams to 14 – for 2020 and 2021, and an advance of US$100 million to cover player wages during pre-season training.

Major League Baseball (MLB), which suspended spring training and postponed the start of its planned 162-game regular season in March, is hoping to salvage the 2020 season, but it must first come to an agreement with its union. In March, the two sides agreed on a modified salary structure that included a lump-sum advance of $170 million to cover player wages for April and May, as well as prorated salaries for the remainder of the season. However last month, MLB owners presented the union with a revised economic plan for the 2020 season that included a 50/50 split of revenue and a sliding scale of pay reductions for players.

Major League Soccer Threatens Player Lockout Over Collective Bargaining Dispute

Major League Soccer is pushing back against the MLS Players Association’s counterproposal regarding changes to the collective bargaining agreement, threatening a lockout if the players union does not accept MLS’ offer by noon Tuesday, according to reports.

The Columbus Dispatch was able to independently confirm the story through a person with knowledge of the situation who was granted anonymity to speak about the private negotiations. In response to the league’s approach, the source confirmed to The Dispatch that players across MLS are refusing to show up Monday for voluntary individual workouts ahead of the league’s attempted resumption of the 2020 season.

After weeks of debate, the union approved a plan that would have all 26 MLS teams take part in a tournament in Orlando at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The holdup involves how much money the league wants to retain from the collective bargaining agreement the two sides agreed to in principle in February. The most significant differences in MLS’ proposed amendments to the CBA and the union’s counteroffer involve revenue based on a new media deal after the 2022 season, salary cuts and a condition that would allow the league to back out of the deal.

Ryan Reynolds And Blake Lively Donate $200,000 To The NAACP

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds took to Instagram to share that they have donated $200,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. In a post they shared to both of their social media accounts, the couple wrote:

“We’ve never had to worry about preparing our kids for different rules of law or what might happen if we’re pulled over in the car. We don’t know what it’s like to experience that life day in and day out. We can’t imagine feeling that kind of fear and anger. We’re ashamed that in the past we’ve allowed ourselves to be uninformed about how deeply rooted systemic racism is.”

Lively added that the two “want to educate ourselves about other people’s experiences and talk to our kids about everything, all of it, especially our own complicity. She wrote that the couple’s donation, which comes during days of protests across America after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, is “just a start” and that they “want to use our privilege and platform to be an ally. And play a part in easing pain for so many who feel as though this grand experiment is failing them.”

Music Industry Calls For ‘Blackout Tuesday’ After George Floyd’s Death

The music industry is standing in solidarity after the death of George Floyd with a “Blackout Tuesday” initiative. Floyd is the black man who was killed while being restrained by Minneapolis police.

Atlantic Records’ senior director of marketing, Jamila Thomas and Platoon’s senior artist campaign manager, Brianna Agyemang, are behind the blackout, which is also circulating on social media as #TheShowMustBePaused. The blackout calls for the music industry to stop operations on Tuesday, June 2, to bring awareness to the police brutality and racial injustice in the U.S.

A statement read, “The music industry is a multibillion dollar industry. An industry that has profited predominantly from black art. Our mission is to hold the industry at large, including major corporations and their partners who benefit from the efforts, struggles and successes of black people accountable. To that end, it is the obligation of these entities to protect and empower the black community that have made them disproportionately wealthy in ways that are measurable and transparent.”  The statement continued, “This is not just a 24-hour initiative. We are and will be in this fight for the long haul. We are tired and can’t change things alone.”

“Blackout Tuesday” has received support from major record labels, including Interscope Records, Def Jam Recordings, Warner Records, Sony Music Entertainment, Capitol Records and Columbia Records, among others.

The initiative is a response to the widespread protests that have broken out across the country since Floyd died under police custody.
