Fleetwood Mac Icon Peter Green Dead At 73

Fleetwood Mac co-founder and iconic British blues guitarist Peter Green has died at the age of 73. His family said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Green announce his death this weekend, peacefully in his sleep. A further statement will be provided in the coming days.”

Green began his career as a teenager playing in various UK outfits; he replaced Eric Clapton in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers at the age of 19. A year later, Green brought Bluesbreakers drummer Mick Fleetwood with him to form Fleetwood Mac alongside guitarist Jeremy Spencer and Bob Brunning in London; a short time later, Brunning was replaced by Mayall’s bassist John McVie and the band recorded and issued their self-titled debut album in early 1968, which went Top 5 in the country.

Green wrote a number of classic tracks and hits for the group during the early years, including “Black Magic Woman”, “Man Of The World”, “Oh Well”, “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)” and the UK No.1 “Albatross.” A month after leaving Fleetwood Mac in the spring of 1970, Green recorded his solo debut, “The End Of The Game.” He returned to issue a second record, “In The Skies”, in 1979, and a yearly series of albums up until 1984.

Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty Dedicates $100 Million to Mental Health Services

To celebrate her 28th birthday, Selena Gomez announced that her makeup company, Rare Beauty, is launching the Rare Impact Fund, which will set out to raise $100 million and provide underserved communities with mental health resources.

Gomez outlined exactly how the company would do it: one percent of Rare Beauty’s annual sales — in addition to funds raised by partners — will go to the Rare Impact Fund. If everything goes according to plan, the company will raise the $100 million goal over the next 10 years. Billboard notes that if Rare Beauty reaches that milestone, it would be “one of the largest known funds supporting mental health from a corporate entity.”

Rare Beauty created the Rare Beauty Mental Health Council, which includes members from universities, organizations such as the Sad Girls Club and the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, and companies like Sephora and YouTube.

Gomez has been open about her mental health in the past and revealed her bipolar diagnosis with Miley Cyrus on her Instagram Live series, Bright Minded.

U.S. Senate Passes $740 Billion Defense Bill That Would Rename Bases

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate passed its version of the National Defense Authorization Act with a vote of 86-14.  The $740 billion bill setting policy for the Pentagon that President Donald Trump has threatened to veto over a provision removing Confederate names from military bases.

The House of Representatives also passed its version of the NDAA earlier this week with far more than the two-thirds supermajority needed to override a veto. The House bill also included a provision to change the names of military facilities named after generals who fought on the pro-slavery side during the Civil War 155 years ago. Tributes to the Confederacy, and slave owners – like base names and statues – have come under increasing scrutiny amid widespread protests over racial injustice sparked by police killings of Black Americans.

Now, congressional negotiators will meet behind closed doors to negotiate a final, compromise NDAA, reconciling differences between the two. That compromise must pass both chambers before it can be sent for Trump’s signature or veto.
