China Pledges Retaliation After U.S. Orders Consulate In Houston Closed Within 72 Hours

The United States said on Wednesday it had given China 72 hours to close China’s consulate in Houston “to protect American intellectual property and Americans’ private information.” The decision marked an escalation of tensions between the world’s two biggest economies amid fresh accusations of Chinese espionage in the United States.

In response, Chinese state media said in editorials published on Thursday that the move was a “political provocation” and called on Washington to “immediately revoke” the decision. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying wrote on Twitter that China would “surely react with firm countermeasures.” The official English-language newspaper China Daily described the move as “a new gambit in the U.S. administration’s bid to paint China as a malevolent actor on the world stage, and thus make it an outlaw to the international community.”

In a statement released on Thursday morning, the Chinese embassy in Washington accused the United States of “groundless fabrications” about the actions of China’s diplomatic missions and urged it to “immediately revoke this erroneous decision.”  The embassy posted separately on its official Twitter account, “It’s time to step on the brakes and return to the right direction!”

President Trump To Deploy More Federal Agents To Cities In Effort To Crack Down On Violence

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced his plan to send federal agents to cities including Chicago and Albuquerque, in order to crack down on violent crime.

Trump, joined at a White House event by Attorney General William Barr, unveiled an expansion of the “Operation Legend” program to more cities in a further effort by federal officials to tackle violence. “Today I’m announcing a surge of federal law enforcement into American communities plagued by violent crime,” said Trump, adding, “This bloodshed must end; this bloodshed will end.”

The program involves deploying federal law enforcement agents to assist local police in combating what the Justice Department has described as a “surge” of violent crime. Operation Legend involves federal agents from the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service and other agencies partnering with local law enforcement.

NFL Says Fans Will Be Required To Wear Masks At All Games This Season

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed in a tweet on Wednesday that any fans attending games during the upcoming National Football League (NFL) season must wear face masks.

“For those wondering, yes, it is league-wide: fans at NFL games this season will be required to wear face coverings,” McCarthy said.

Teams and local governments in NFL markets across the country have moved to limit the number of fans inside stadiums during the upcoming season, which kicks off Sept. 10, in order to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

The New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens previously said they would significantly reduce the number of attendees on gamedays, while the New York Jets and New York Giants said this week that no fans will attend any upcoming games at MetLife Stadium, citing an executive order from New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.

Mookie Betts Signs Record-Breaking 12-Year, $365M Contract With Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Wednesday that they reached an agreement with star outfielder Mookie Betts for a 12-year, $365 million contract extension.

The long-term deal will keep the former American League MVP from reaching free agency this winter and will keep him with the Dodgers through the 2032 season. Betts’ deal — including the one-year, $27 million contract he’s currently under — will total 13 years and $392 million, including a record $65 million signing bonus. The contract tops the previous extension record of $360 million signed by Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout.

The Dodgers acquired the 27-year-old Betts in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox in February. In his final season with the Red Sox, he recorded a .295 batting average with 29 home runs and 80 RBIs. Betts has earned four Gold Gloves in right field, and finished his championship-winning 2018 campaign with an MVP award.

Season 17 Of Grey’s Anatomy Will Include The Coronavirus Pandemic

TV’s longest running medical drama, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, will take on the coronavirus pandemic in season 17.

Showrunner Krista Vernoff revealed. “There’s no way to be a long-running medical show and not do the medical story of our lifetimes. Every year, we have doctors come and tell us their stories, and usually they’re telling their funniest or craziest stories. This year, it has felt more like therapy. The doctors come in and we’re the first people they’re talking to about these types of experiences they’re having. They are literally shaking and trying not to cry, they’re pale, and they’re talking about it as war—a war that they were not trained for. And that’s been one of our big conversations about Owen, is that he’s actually trained for this in a way that most of the other doctors aren’t.”

Vernoff says the show has a “responsibility” to portray what’s happening right now. “I feel like our show has an opportunity and a responsibility to tell some of those stories,” she said. “Our conversations have been constantly about how do we keep alive humor and romance while we tell these really painful stories.”

Season 16 of Grey’s Anatomy was not able to finish filming, with four episodes left in the season when production was shut down due to the pandemic. However, season three of spinoff Station 19 did finish production, and the two shows would have shared a few storylines had Grey’s been able to finish out its season. As a result, Vernoff said that they had to “pull some scenes and some dialogue” from the finished finale of Station 19, which featured a hospital bombing, Vernoff said she did not plan on returning to those four planned episodes.

Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 will return to ABC this fall.

Kim Kardashian Addresses Kanye West’s Struggle With Bipolar Disorder And Asks For “Compassion”

Kim Kardashian West has spoken out about her husband Kanye West’s bipolar disorder amid erratic behavior on Twitter over the last few days.

Kardashian, who has never spoken publicly about her husband’s bipolar disorder, issued a lengthy statement on Instagram defending West. She noted that she has avoided speaking about this subject publicly out of respect for her kids as well as her husband’s right to privacy: “As many of you know, Kanye has bi-polar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand,” Kardashian’s statement shared to Instagram begins.

Kim said Kanye is a “brilliant and complicated” person that is simply struggling to deal with his mental illness at times: “He is a brilliant but complicated person who on top of the pressure of being an artist and a black man, who experienced the painful loss of his mother, and has to deal with the pressure and isolation that is heightened by his bi-polar disorder,” she wrote. “Those who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words some times do not align with his intentions.”

The reality star’s statement comes hours after he reportedly posted and subsequently deleted a tweet in which he claimed he wanted to divorce her. However, she made it clear she stands by him no matter the struggle. She seemingly confirmed that West’s recent behavior, including his presidential campaign rally and tweets, are part of an issue involving his mental health. She requested privacy and “compassion and empathy” from others, concluding: “We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however we should also give it to the individuals who are living with it in times when they need it the most.”
