Hong Kong Media Tycoon Jimmy Lai Arrested Under National Security Law

An aide to Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai says Lai was arrested Monday morning under the city’s national security law on suspicion of collusion with foreign powers. The aide, Mark Simon, wrote on Twitter, “Jimmy Lai is being arrested for collusion with foreign powers at this time.”

Lai owns the popular tabloid Apple Daily, and is an outspoken pro-democracy figure in Hong Kong, who regularly criticizes China’s authoritarian rule. Hong Kong police said in a statement that seven people had been arrested on suspicion of violating the national security law, but did not reveal the names of those arrested.

20 Injured, One Dead In Washington D.C. Shooting

A 17-year-old was killed and 20 others were injured in an overnight shooting Saturday in Washington D.C. Metro police chief Peter Newsham said that an off-duty 1st District Police officer was one of the victims, who was shot and “seriously injured.” Newsham said that judging from gunshots being fired in multiple locations simultaneously, it appeared there were at least three shooters.

Newsham said the shooting occurred at a large social gathering with several hundred people in attendance, and that police had been at the scene earlier. He added, “Preliminarily there were police officers on the scene. I want to confirm that, I want to talk to the management team over here and see if we were doing everything we possibly could. Because we can’t tolerate these types of gatherings in our city during COVID-19, it’s just too dangerous.”

St. Louis Cardinals/Pittsburg Pirates Series Postponed This Week

The St. Louis Cardinals’ shutdown due to a COVID-19 outbreak will go through at least Wednesday, the league announced Sunday.  With another positive test, MLB said that this week’s three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium has been postponed. The team announced that outfielder Lane Thomas had tested positive, bringing the club’s total to 10 players and seven staffers.

St. Louis has played just five games, and with this series cancellation it brings the team’s total to 15 postponed games. ”In light of the most recent positive test results, MLB and the Club believe it is prudent to conduct additional testing while players and staff are quarantined before the team returns to play,” Major League Baseball said in a statement Sunday.

St. Louis is scheduled to play a doubleheader on Thursday against the Tigers in Detroit – makeups for postponed games on Aug. 4 and 5..

Philadelphia 76ers Ben Simmons Likely Out For Season Due To Knee Surgery

Philadelphia 76ers All-Star Ben Simmons will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and is likely to miss the rest of the season. The procedure is expected to take place outside of the Disney campus in the coming days, and the Sixers are preparing now for a postseason run that will come without Simmons.

Simmons will have a loose body removed from his left knee; the loose body was a result of a left patella subluxation suffered in Wednesday’s victory over the Washington Wizards. A subluxation of the patella means that the kneecap popped out of place but returned on its own.
