Philadelphia 76ers Fire Coach Brett Brown After Sweep By Boston Celtics

The Philadelphia 76ers have fired head coach Brett Brown after seven seasons. Under Brown, the 76ers posted a 43-30 record this season and were expected to be serious contenders in the Eastern Conference. Instead, the Boston Celtics swept the sixth-seeded Sixers on Sunday.

76ers general manager Elton Brand said in a statement Monday, “I have a tremendous level of respect for Brett both personally and professionally and appreciate all he’s done for the 76ers organization and the City of Philadelphia. He did many positive things during his time here, developing young talent and helping position our team for three straight postseason appearances. Unfortunately, we fell well short of our goals this year and I believe it is best to go in a new direction. This will be an important off-season for us as we look to get back on track towards our goal of competing for an NBA championship.”

The 76ers hired Brown as the 25th head coach in franchise history in Aug. 2013, and he compiled a 221-344 record as head coach. Brown led the team to a 12-14 record in the playoffs.

Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, president & CEO of the American Theatre Wing, said in a joint statement: “Though unprecedented events cut the 2019-2020 Broadway season short, it was a year full of extraordinary work that deserves to be recognized. We are thrilled not only to have found a way to properly celebrate our artists’ incredible achievements this season, but also to be able to uplift the entire theatre community and show the world what makes our Broadway family so special at this difficult time. The show must go on, no matter what — and it will.”

No further details were announced as of press time.  To date, 41 Broadway theaters have been dark since March 12 due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, which is the longest shutdown in its history.
