President Trump Urges Goodyear Tire Boycott After Company Bans Political Attire

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for a boycott of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co, accusing the company of “playing politics” by forbidding workers from donning “Make America Great Again” hats and other political attire worn by Trump supporters.

Trump wrote on Twitter, “Don’t buy GOODYEAR TIRES – They announced a BAN ON MAGA HATS,” referring to his slogan “Make America Great Again” often emblazoned on baseball caps. The President also said at a White House briefing, “I’m not happy with Goodyear because what they’re doing is playing politics.”

Goodyear has said, however, that a widely circulated image that triggered the controversy was not created or distributed by the company’s corporate group. The image detailed appropriate and inappropriate examples of attire, with ‘Black Lives Matter’ and ‘Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride’ deemed acceptable, while ‘Blue Lives Matter’ and ‘MAGA Attire’ were not. “To be clear on our longstanding corporate policy, Goodyear has zero tolerance for any form of harassment or discrimination,” the company said in a statement.

Sen. Kamala Harris Accepts Democratic Nomination For Vice Presidential Candidate At 2020 Democratic National Convention

U.S. Senator Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic nomination for vice president on Wednesday, becoming the first Black woman and Asian-American on a major U.S. presidential ticket.  Harris summarized her life story on the third day of the Democratic National Convention, on an evening that featured women headliners, moderators and speakers.  Harris spoke directly to millions of women, young Americans and voters of color, constituencies Democrats need for Biden to defeat President Trump.

The choice of a running mate has bolstered Biden’s chances against Trump.  Biden, 77, would be the oldest person to become president if he is elected. His age has led to speculation he will serve only one term, making Harris a potential top contender for the nomination in 2024. Biden named Harris, 55, as his running mate last week to face incumbents Trump, 74, and Vice President Mike Pence, 61.

Former first lady and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee who lost to Trump, said, “This can’t be another woulda coulda shoulda election. No matter what, vote. Vote like our lives and livelihoods are on the line, because they are.”

Others speakers on Day 3 of the DNC were Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who ran against Biden in the 2020 primary.

Cincinnati Reds Broadcaster Thom Brennaman Apologizes For Using Homophobic Slur On Air

Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman has apologized for using a homophobic slur during Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. In a clip that has circulated around social media, Brennaman was heard saying the slur moments after the Fox Sports Ohio broadcast returned from a commercial break before the top of the seventh inning. The 56-year-old sportscaster didn’t appear to realize he was already on air when he said, “One of the [expletive] capitals of the world.”

By the fifth inning of the second game of a doubleheader, Brennaman issued an apology for using the slur. Before signing off and turning over play-by-play duties to Jim Day, Brennaman said, “I made a comment earlier tonight that I guess went out over the air that I am deeply ashamed of. If I have hurt anyone out there, I can’t tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart I’m so very, very sorry. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith.”

Thom Brennaman is the son of Hall of Fame broadcaster Marty Brennaman, and has called MLB games for 33 years. He’s been a member of Fox Sports for the last 27 years.
