House Speaker Nancy Pelosi And Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin Strike Deal To Avert Shutdown

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin have reached a bipartisan deal to keep the government funded through early December and avoid a shutdown just before the election. Pelosi hailed the short-term spending legislation — known as a “continuing resolution,” or CR – in a statement on Tuesday, in which she pointed to $8 billion in increased spending on food-assistance programs that she secured, in exchange for agreeing to renewing funding for a farm bailout program strongly supported by Republicans.]

The legislation extends government funding through Dec. 11, and could come to the Senate floor later this week. Congress needs to pass a spending bill by Sept. 30 or large portions of the government would begin to shut down. The bill also must be signed by President Trump ahead of the shutdown deadline.

NFL League Fines Teams And Coaches For Failing To Wear Masks Properly

The National Football League has handed some of their coaches and teams hefty fines for failing to wear masks properly during Week 2 games. The league fined the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks $250,000 each, while the head coach of each team received an additional $100,000 fine for mask noncompliance.

The league began the 2020 season with numerous health and safety protocols in place designed to mitigate the risks from the COVID-19 pandemic. The NFL requires all coaches and staff in the bench area to wear masks during games and recommends players on the sidelines do the same. Individual teams have been left to determine for themselves whether to allow fans inside stadiums.

The league said on Tuesday that there were zero confirmed COVID-19 positives among players for the testing period from Sept. 13-19, while there were five positives among “other personnel.”

Chicago Bulls Hire Former Oklahoma City Thunder Head Coach Billy Donovan

The Chicago Bulls announced on Tuesday that they have hired former Oklahoma City Thunder coach Billy Donovan as their next head coach. Donovan’s new job comes less than two weeks after he mutually parted ways with the Thunder after five seasons. He replaces Jim Boylen, who was fired by the Bulls in August.

Donovan posted a 243-157 record as head coach of the Thunder, including an 18-23 mark in the postseason. He initially signed a five-year deal with the Thunder in April 2015 after spending 19 years as the men’s basketball coach at the University of Florida, where he won two national titles. Donovan guided the Thunder to the playoffs in all five of his seasons. In his first year in Oklahoma City, he led the Thunder to the Western Conference finals.

Final Season of Schitt’s Creek Coming to Netflix in October

Less than 24 hours after the comedy hit Schitt’s Creek completed a history-making sweep at the Emmys, the show’s sixth and final season will make its way to Netflix beginning October 7th. Schitt’s Creek Season 6 originally aired on Pop TV between January and April of this year.

Schitt’s Creek originally ran on Canada’s CBC Television beginning in 2015, but the only way to watch it in the US was to subscribe to Pop TV or buy episodes on Amazon. Netflix began hosting past seasons in 2017, and the series had a huge spike in popularity in the U.S. At Sunday night’s 2020 Emmy Awards, Schitt’s Creek took home every single award in the comedy series categories — the first time the feat has ever been accomplished. On top of winning Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Writing, each of the shows’ four principal cast members won trophies: Eugene Levy for Outstanding Lead Actor, Catherine O’Hara for Outstanding Lead Actress, Dan Levy for Outstanding Supporting Actor, and Annie Murphy for Outstanding Supporting Actress.
