Five Americans Among Those Killed in Egypt Helicopter Crash

Five Americans were among seven international peacekeepers killed when their helicopter crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. All indications are that the crash, which also left one American peacekeeper injured, “appears to be mechanical in nature”. The peacekeepers are part of the international mission that oversees the enforcement of the 1978 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

The MFO said in a revised statement issued on its website: “We are deeply saddened by the loss on November 12, 2020, of seven of our uniformed military colleagues from three countries who died in a helicopter crash during a routine mission. This included one Czech, one French, and five U.S. MFO members, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these soldiers at this difficult time. We wish the one U.S. MFO Member who survived the crash a speedy recovery.”

Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller said in a statement: “the Defense Department is deeply saddened by the loss of five U.S. and two partner nation service members in a helicopter crash in the Sinai Peninsula operating with the United Nations Multinational Force and Observers. Yesterday we recognized the sacrifice of millions of American veterans who have defended our nation for generations, and today we are tragically reminded of the last full measure our uniformed warriors may pay for their service. I extend the Department’s condolences to the families, friends and teammates of these service members.”

There are 452 U.S. military personnel among the force of 1,154 international peacekeepers that is part of the legacy mission in the Sinai Peninsula to enforce the 1978 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Active duty military personnel were assigned to the mission for decades, but in recent years it has been carried out by National Guardsmen.

Republican Senators And Other Officials Push For President-Elect Biden To Receive Intelligence Briefings

On Thursday, an increasing number of senate Republicans and former national security officials pushed to grant President-elect Biden access to presidential-level intelligence briefings, a key step in transitioning to the White House.

The congressional Republicans acknowledged a need for Biden to begin to get critical information about the nation’s security, and over 150 former national security officials in a letter on Thursday urged the GSA to recognize Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as the winners of the election, giving them access to the President’s Daily Briefing and to begin to obtain the security clearances necessary for members of the transition team.

The group, which includes several former Trump administration officials, warned of serious national security risks as a result of the delay in Biden’s transition. Senate Republicans have also voiced support for Biden to receive the briefings.

Ivy League Cancels Entire Winter Sports Season And Delays Spring Play

With coronavirus cases in the United States reaching an all-time high this week, the Ivy League announced Thursday that it is shutting down its entire 2020-21 winter sports season.

The league wrote in a statement posted to Twitter: “With the health and well-being of student-athletes and the greater campus community in mind, The Ivy League Presidents decide to forego athletics competition in fall and winter sports, postpone competition in spring sports through February 2021.”  In July, the Ivy League was the first conference to announce the cancellation of its fall sports season as a result of the pandemic. This week alone, four games involving Top 25 college football teams have been postponed due to COVID-19 complications, and another game had to be canceled.

In announcing its unanimous decision, the Ivy League Council of Presidents said in a statement that they recognized the “extraordinary adjustments” its member schools have been asked to make in the wake of the pandemic, adding, “regrettably, the current trends regarding transmission of the COVID-19 virus and subsequent protocols that must be put in place are impeding our strong desire to return to intercollegiate athletics competition in a safe manner. Student-athletes, their families and coaches are again being asked to make enormous sacrifices for the good of public health — and we do not make this decision lightly. While these decisions come with great disappointment and frustration, our commitment to the safety and lasting health of our student-athletes and wider communities must remain our highest priority.”

‘Chicago Fire’ Suspends Production After Positive COVID-19 Tests

NBC’s Chicago Fire has paused production for two weeks after several members of the production team tested positive for COVID-19. The drama series, currently filming its ninth season, halted production on Sunday, Nov. 8 and will not resume for 14 days, or until on or after Nov. 22, due to increased precautions amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Production was suspended after several individuals produced positive results. Those individuals, who are believed to be in Zone 1 (as series resumed productions, “zones” were created to provide protection to cast and crew members), performed duties that required close proximity to other members of the cast and crew. The test results triggered guidelines set by the state and county, such as contact tracing.

The shutdown comes just a little more than a month after a similar scenario played out on the set of Chicago Med. In late September, production on that series was paused for two weeks after a production team member tested positive for the virus. All three Chicago series – Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD — are filmed in Chicago, and Illinois recently set a record for a second day in a row with 12,657 new cases. The return to filming comes with a number of changes as production companies enact new safety measures, such as frequent testing and social distancing on set when possible.
