U.S. Hits Record High Number of New Daily Covid-19 Cases As Death Rates Increase 21%

The United States has hit record highs in the coronavirus pandemic, surpassing 100,000 new daily cases of Covid-19.

According to the data being tracked by Johns Hopkins University, 102,831 new cases were recorded on Wednesday. This was the highest one-day increase since the pandemic began earlier this year. The latest figures include 1,097 more deaths from the coronavirus on Wednesday as well, out of a total of 6,004 deaths in the last week.

This daily figure is part of a recent surge in cases, with more than 600,000 new cases in a week being reported for the first time. Health experts are concerned about continued increases in infections as the weather gets colder. Currently, the U.S. has reported 9.48 million Covid-19 cases and more than 233,000 deaths.

ESPN Announces 300 Layoffs Amid COVID-19 Disruption

ESPN announced Thursday it will lay off 300 employees, marking its largest number of job cuts in five years. In addition, it will not fill about 200 open positions.

The DIsney-owned sports network employs about 6,000 people worldwide, 4,000 of whom are in Bristol, Conn. It laid off 300 employees during a round of cuts in 2015. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a message to employees Thursday, “Today is hard because ESPN has always been — and will always be — fortified by its fantastic people. We have, however, reached an inflection point. The speed at which change is occurring requires great urgency, and we must now deliver on serving sports fans in a myriad of many ways.”

Pitaro said COVID-19 has had a “significant impact” on ESPN operations. Since the start of the pandemic, all major sports leagues have delayed their games and mostly eliminated fan attendance.

Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears Join Texans And Colts In Closing Training Facilities Due To COVID-19 Concerns

On Thursday, the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs are the latest NFL teams to close down their training facilities due to a positive coronavirus test.  In a statement, the Bears said they were notified of a player testing positive Thursday morning and paused all in-person activities at Halas Hall, canceling practice. Chicago is scheduled to face the Tennessee Titans in Nashville on Sunday.

Closures in Kansas City and Chicago followed news that the Indianapolis Colts conducted its meetings virtually after a staff member tested positive. The Houston Texans also shut down their facility for the second straight week after a player’s positive test. Linebacker Jacob Martin was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list, while linebackers Whitney Mercilus and Ryan Cole have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after being labeled as high risk due to close contact.

Production Of Upcoming Film “Don’t Worry Darling” Is Shut Down Due To Positive COVID-19 Case

The Olivia Wilde-directed film Don’t Worry Darling, has temporarily stopped filming in Los Angeles after a team member tested positive for COVID-19. The film stars Wilde, Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Kiki Layne, Gemma Chan, and Nick Kroll, and has been shooting since last month. The positive test was discovered after a series of ongoing tests on site, which is regularly required of all crew members on most live-action film and TV productions. The individual is currently in isolation, and cast members are quarantining as a precaution, given their close proximity to the individual.

Per guidelines, production is presumed to shut down for 14 days. Photos of the actors on Don’t Worry Darling, including Pine and Styles, were taken from around the set a day before the positive test was revealed.

Vaughn, 50, told Entertainment Tonight earlier this week: “Owen and I and the director of Crashers have been talking for the first time seriously [about] a sequel to that movie. There has been an idea that is pretty good. So we are talking about that in the early stages.”

Wilson, 51, and Vaughn have appeared in multiple movies together, including 2013’s The Internship, which marked the first time they led a film side-by-side since Wedding Crashers.
