Protests In NYC, Portland Lead To Arrests As U.S. Awaits Results Of Presidential Election

At least 30 people were arrested overnight in Portland, Ore., and New York City amid protests that erupted in response to the U.S. presidential election.

Approximately 10 people were arrested Wednesday evening in downtown Portland where a demonstration was declared a riot as storefronts were smashed and ATMs damaged. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown activated the National Guard to assist local law enforcement with combating the widespread violence. The demonstration of some 350 people formed in the North Park Blocks of Portland before marching downtown and was declared a riot after the violence erupted, police said.

In New York City, police said more than 20 people were arrested, accusing them of attempting to “hijack a peaceful protest by lighting fires, throwing garbage and eggs in Manhattan.” The New York Police Department said on Twitter that officers had confiscated weapons such as knives and M80 fireworks while attempting to disperse a demonstration.

Kansas Hospitals Stressed as Coronavirus Cases In The State Continue To Rise

Several dozen hospitals in Kansas reported on Wednesday that they expect to deal with staffing shortages over the next week as the state continues to report an average of well over 1,000 new coronavirus cases a day. The Wichita area’s two major health systems said Wednesday that almost 150 coronavirus patients were hospitalized, their highest numbers since the pandemic began. Additionally, they are trying to bring about 60 nurses from outside Kansas into the state to help with staffing, and it has converted space into two new units for COVID-19 patients.

A surge in cases has also prompted public health officials and the local Chamber of Commerce in south-central Kansas to advise residents to be more diligent in following the mask mandate and following other public health recommendations, such as observing social distancing and avoiding gatherings. Public health officials say Kansas is seeing such large numbers of new cases because too many people aren’t wearing masks in public, aren’t social distancing and aren’t avoiding gatherings. They contend that people are letting their guard down at family events such as parties, weddings and baby showers.

The state averaged 33 new hospitalizations a day for the seven days ending Wednesday. The state health department reported 91 new hospitalizations since Monday, bringing the total to 3,984 since the pandemic reached Kansas in early March. The state also reported an additional 41 deaths since Monday, to bring the pandemic total to 1,087. Kansas averaged 11 additional deaths a day for the seven days ending Wednesday.

San Francisco 49ers Shut Team Facility After Positive COVID-19 Test

The San Francisco 49ers closed their team facility Wednesday after wide receiver Kendrick Bourne tested positive for COVID-19. The 49ers are scheduled to host the Green Bay Packers on Thursday in Santa Clara, Calif. Bourne’s agent, Henry Organ, said he is asymptomatic, but has gone into self-quarantine.

The 49ers said in a news release: “Our organization has entered the NFL’s intensive protocol, and we are working with the league on contact tracing to identify high-risk individuals. The health and safety of our players, staff and community are the organization’s highest priority. We will continue to work closely with the NFL and medical professionals and will follow their direction.”

The 49ers said they will conduct virtual team meetings because of the positive test result. The team’s Thursday Night Football game — set for 8:20 p.m. EST on Thursday — remains scheduled.

Detroit Lions Place QB Matthew Stafford On Reserve/COVID-19 List

The Detroit Lions announced that quarterback Matthew Stafford missed practice Wednesday and has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Stafford is considered a “high-risk, close contact” of a non-team member who tested positive for COVID-19. Stafford’s last contact with the individual was Monday, which means he would be eligible to come off the reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday and play against the Minnesota Vikings, pending five straight days of negative tests for him. This is Stafford’s second stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Stafford had a false positive test in August, part of the reason the NFL changed its protocols on testing at the time.

Stafford joins linebacker Jarrad Davis on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Davis was placed on the list Tuesday. The two cases, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, are not related. The Lions have not had a player on the list since the beginning of training camp in August, when Detroit had at least seven players on the list.

With Stafford not at practice, the Lions used backup quarterbacks Chase Daniel and David Blough. Stafford, 32, has completed 61.4% of his passes this season for 1,916 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Hilarie Burton Joins Husband Jeffrey Dean Morgan on The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is finally introducing the woman behind Negan’s infamous baseball bat. Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s real-life wife, actress Hilarie Burton, will portray Negan’s wife Lucille in a guest-starring role for the newly added bonus episodes of season 10.

“Been pretty hard to keep this a secret,” the actress tweeted. “But I love working with @JDMorgan. I love watching him become #Negan and take on that swagger. And I love the @TheWalkingDead family. They’ve been a part of our family for ages and I’m so grateful for their kindness.”

In the Walking Dead comics, Lucille suffered from cancer before the zombie viral outbreak. Negan had been having an affair, which Lucille knew about. He eventually broke it off to spend as much time with his wife in her final moments. Lucille died as the outbreak struck and, in the post-apocalyptic times, he named his baseball bat, wrapped in barbed wire, after her.

Burton will appear in one of the six new episodes AMC added to The Walking Dead season 10, set to continue in 2021. She’s best known for her role on One Tree Hill and has more recently appeared across Council of Dads, Lethal Weapon, and Extant.

Slipknot Tease South American Knotfest For 2021

Slipknot’s Knotfest UK and Knotfest At Sea had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, but the good news is that the band are teasing Knotfest shows coming in Brazil, Chile and Colombia in 2021.

The band have also recently hinted at a follow-up to last year’s album We Are Not Your Kind. “We’re obviously thinking about what the next album could be like,” Corey Taylor said. “And [Clown]’s in this trippy place, dude, which is rad. I love it when he’s in this crazy mindset, because I know I’m gonna hear stuff that I’ve never heard before. He’s so goddamn creative, and that inspires Jim [Root, guitar]. And all the tumblers really start to fall. So it’s pretty rad. I can’t wait.”

For more info, check out the band’s website at Knotfest.com.
