President Trump Signs Executive Order To Give Americans Priority Access To COVID-19 Vaccines

President Donald Trump announced a decree Tuesday aimed at granting Americans priority access to vaccines. Trump’s executive order would “ensure that American citizens have first priority to receive American vaccines,” but it was unclear whether it would hold legal weight, since drugmakers have already signed deals with other countries.

Meanwhile, a more cautious presentation held simultaneously by President-elect Joe Biden warned that efforts to get the vaccine out to Americans would “slow and stall” if Congress does not urgently come up with funding. Biden stressed it was imperative for lawmakers to “finish the bipartisan work underway now or millions of Americans may wait months longer to get the vaccine.” Biden also pledged that his administration would carry out at least 100 million vaccinations in his first 100 days in office, a more conservative estimate than that offered by Trump officials.

Positive news related to vaccines emerged on Tuesday, including US regulators calling the Pfizer-BioNTech immunization — which Britain began rolling out on Tuesday — safe and effective in a briefing document. Pfizer will soon be granted emergency approval in the United States, with a meeting on the topic set for Thursday. A meeting on emergency approval for US firm Moderna’s vaccine candidate is scheduled for December 17.

Adam Eaton Returning to White Sox on One-Year, $7 Million Deal

Free agent outfielder Adam Eaton has re-signed with the White Sox, agreeing to a one-year, $7 million deal. The team has an option for a second year worth $8.5 million. Eaton, 32, is expected to be the White Sox’ everyday right fielder pending a physical. The move to sign Eaton comes after the White Sox acquired starting pitcher Lance Lynn in a trade with the Rangers on Monday.

Eaton last played for Chicago from 2014 to 2016, playing in 433 games and leading the league in triples twice. The White Sox traded Eaton to the Washington Nationals before the 2017 season for right-handed pitchers Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Dane Dunning.

Eaton won a World Series championship title during his four years with the Nationals. In 2020,  he recorded 36 hits and four home runs to go along with a .226 batting average in 41 games played.

Michigan-Ohio State Game Cancelled Due To Increase In Positive COVID-19 Cases

For the first time in more than 100 years, Michigan has canceled Saturday’s rivalry game with Ohio State. The program announced the cancellation on Tuesday due to “an increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases and student-athletes in quarantine over the past week.”

At least 40 players were expected to miss the game because of either a positive test, contact tracing or an unrelated injury. The program received multiple positive COVID-19 test results on Monday, and the program is expecting the number to rise.

“The number of positive tests has continued to trend in an upward direction over the last seven days,” Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel in a released statement. “We have not been cleared to participate in practice at this time. Unfortunately, we will not be able to field a team due to COVID-19 positives and the associated quarantining required of close-contact individuals. This decision is disappointing for our team and coaches but their health and safety is paramount, and it will always come first in our decision-making.”

Bob Dylan Sells Entire Songwriting Catalog For $300M

Bob Dylan has sold the publishing rights to his entire back catalog to Universal Music Group for a whopping $300 million.

In the deal, UMG acquired over 600 of Dylan’s songs dating back to 1962, which the legendary singer-songwriter controlled the copyrights to. It includes all of his songs through this year’s Rough and Rowdy WaysThe catalog of music includes Dylan’s biggest hits including “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Tangled Up In Blue,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Lay Lady Lay,” “The Times They Are a-Changin’” and like a Rolling Stone.”

Unlike other artists’ catalogs, Dylan wrote the songs’ lyrics himself and melodies himself, which means the song rights weren’t split among other writers and makes the catalog so valuable. Universal will also collect royalties whenever another artist covers any Dylan song moving forward as well. However, the deal will not include any songs that Dylan writes in the future.
