Boston Red Sox acquire relief pitcher Adam Ottavino in trade with NY Yankees

The Boston Red Sox have acquired right-handed reliever Adam Ottavino from the New York Yankees. The Red Sox also will receive pitcher Frank German, a Yankees fourth-round pick from 2018, while taking on the majority of Ottavino’s remaining salary. In exchange, the Red Sox will send a player to be named later or cash to New York. Ottavino will make $8 million in 2021. He’s also due a $3 million signing bonus in 2022.

The 35-year-old Ottavino had a down season in 2020, compiling a 5.89 ERA and 1.582 WHIP in 24 appearances. However, in the years prior, Ottavino established himself as one of the best late-inning relievers in baseball. He posted a 1.90 ERA in 2019, his first season in New York, and he logged a 2.43 ERA and 0.991 WHIP with the Colorado Rockies the previous season.

President Biden signs executive order to lift Trump administration military transgender ban

President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Monday to lift a ban issued by President Donald Trump that prevented transgender persons from serving openly in the U.S. armed forces. The Trump administration ordered that all military members must follow standards associated with their birth gender and prohibited those who have received transitional therapies from joining the military.

Biden wrote in the order, which appeared in the Federal Register on Monday, to “immediately prohibits involuntary separations, discharges, and denials of re-enlistment or continuation of service on the basis of gender identity or under circumstances relating to gender identity. It is the policy of my administration to prevent and combat discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation, and to fully enforce Title VII and other laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation. It is also the policy of my administration to address overlapping forms of discrimination.”

The White House said Biden’s order states that “all Americans who are qualified to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States should be able to serve. President Biden believes that gender identity should not be a bar to military service, and that America’s strength is found in its diversity.”

Janet Yellen confirmed by Senate as first female Treasury secretary

On Monday, the Senate confirmed Janet Yellen as the first woman to head the Treasury Department in an 84-15 vote.

Lawmakers approved Yellen to serve as Treasury secretary as Congress moves to weigh in on President Joe Biden’s cabinet selections. Yellen previously received unanimous approval from the Senate Finance Committee. As Treasury secretary, Yellen will head up the administration’s efforts to support Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus program, which she highlighted as a primary goal during her confirmation hearing.

Yellen was the first woman to serve as chair of the Federal Reserve. She said in a statement that the Biden administration must be able to provide coronavirus relief before turning to other issues, saying, “Right now, with interest rates at historic lows, the smartest thing we can do is act big,” she said.

Los Angeles Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard, Paul George ruled out due to COVID-19 protocols

Los Angeles Clippers players Kawhi Leonard and Paul George will miss Tuesday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks because of the NBA’s COVID-19 protocols. Leonard and George didn’t travel with the Clippers to Atlanta on Monday.

The Clippers will be without their two best players and starting point guard Patrick Beverley for the start of a six-game road trip. Beverley also will miss Tuesday’s game against the Hawks due to right knee soreness. Leonard or George could possibly return to the team on the road trip if they clear the league’s COVID-19 protocols.

Leonard, George and Beverley all played in Sunday’s 108-100 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. George was held out of the last five minutes due to hamstring tightness and Beverley didn’t play in the second half because of the knee injury.
