President Joe Biden signed several executive orders on Thursday in the hopes of quickly implementing his administration’s response to the COVID-19 crisis. The orders laid out an aggressive new strategy to fight the pandemic.
In addition to the executive actions, Biden unveiled a new, nearly 200-page national strategy during an announcement at the White House, saying, “This plan is comprehensive, based on science, not politics. It’s based on truth, not denial. And it’s based on detail. Help is on the way.” The Biden administration said under the plan, the federal government will use its resources and influence for a more effective national response, as well as to help state and local governments.
Thursday’s orders will utilize the Defense Production Act to increase supplies necessary for conducting large-scale vaccine distribution and to increase testing, as well as producing more masks and other protective equipment. The administration is also working to establish a pandemic testing board. Officials said the Biden administration will also “clarify” health insurance companies’ obligation to cover COVID-19 testing.
Seven Democratic senators filed a complaint urging the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate GOP Sens. Ted Cruz’s and Josh Hawley’s efforts to overturn the presidential election results. The complaint comes more than two weeks after the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol led by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Cruz and Hawley both raised formal objections during the joint session to confirm Electoral College results and voted against states’ election results after Congress reconvened following the attack.
The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Thurday that they have signed former Washington Football Team quarterback Dwayne Haskins to a one-year contract. Haskins was released by Washington on Dec. 28.

He opened the 2020 season as Washington’s starter but was demoted for quarterback Kyle Allen. Haskins was re-promoted later in the season and started two games, before being benched again in Week 16. He was stripped of his captainship and fined by Washington after a second COVID-19 violation. He appeared to have attended a party maskless and his $40,000 fine was the largest known for a player for a COVID-19 violation.

Actress Christina Ricci has been granted a restraining order against her estranged husband, James Heerdegen, whom she is accusing of domestic abuse. Ricci filed for the restraining order claiming multiple incidents had led to her fearing for her life and that of her son. The domestic violence restraining order requires Heerdegen to remain 100 yards away from her and their son, and to have no contact with them.
Ricci alleges that she became “trapped” in her house with Heerdegen due to the Covid-19 pandemic after telling him she wanted a divorce. She claims he attacked her twice in June last year and left her with physical injuries, and alleges that one of the attacks took place in front of their six-year-old son. People reports that Ricci filed to the court several photos of injuries she claimed to have suffered from Heerdegen.
Heerdegen’s lawyer Larry Bakman said that he plans to file his own restraining order over allegations of “her abusive conduct fuelled by alcohol and substance abuse”. Bakman also said his client “unequivocally denies all allegations of abuse made by [Ricci] as having occurred in 2020.”
