Colorado Rockies OF Ian Desmond opts out for a 2nd straight season

Colorado Rockies veteran outfielder Ian Desmond is opting out for a second straight season, announcing on Sunday on his Instagram account that his “desire to be with my family is greater than my desire to go back and play baseball under these circumstances. I’m going to train and watch how things unfold.”

The 35-year-old Desmond is in the final year of a five-year, $70 million deal he signed in December 2016. He is scheduled to make $8 million this season. Colorado has a $15 million option for 2022 with a $2 million buyout. Last season, Desmond cited a desire to spend more time with his family and to help grow youth baseball in his Florida hometown. He also added the COVID-19 pandemic made the baseball season one that “is a risk I am not comfortable taking.”

On Sunday, Desmond said: “This impacts a lot of people, some positively and some negatively, and I own that. At the end of the day, this weighs on me more than anyone but I’m following my heart and I feel good about my decision.” Desmond added that he’s informed teammates, the coaching staff and front office and they’ve all been “extremely understanding and supportive.”

‘The Muppet Show’ to air with a content disclaimer warning on Disney+

Jim Henson’s classic series “The Muppet Show” began streaming on Disney+ on Friday, but now will come prefaced with an offensive content disclaimer, saying, “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversations to create a more inclusive future together.”

The show, which ran for five seasons between 1976 and 1981, features the new content warning on 18 episodes, including those guest-hosted by Steve Martin, Peter Sellers, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Debbie Harry and Marty Feldman, among others.

Each episode bears the 12-second disclaimer for a different reason; Cash’s appearance had him singing in front of a Confederate flag, and other episodes had negative depictions of Native Americans, Middle Easterners and people from other cultures. Two episodes from the final season, featuring guest stars Brooke Shields and staff writer Chris Langham, are left out entirely.

Members of Soundgarden respond to lawsuit filed by Chris Cornell’s widow, Vicky Cornell

The surviving members of Soundgarden have released a statement with regards to the lawsuit that Chris Cornell’s widow, Vicky Cornell, filed last week. The statement from Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd reads: “The buyout offer that was demanded by the Estate has been grossly mischaracterized and we are confident that clarity will come out in court. All offers to buy out our interests have been unsolicited and rejected outright. For more than a year, Soundgarden’s social media accounts have been hijacked; misleading and confusing our fans. Being a band from Washington State since 1984, we are proud of Soundgarden’s musical legacy, work and career. We look forward to completing the final Soundgarden album.”

In the suit filed in U.S. District Court Western District of Washington, Vicky Cornell says that the surviving members offered her “the villainously low figure of less than $300,000,” despite having allegedly received a $16,000,000 offer from an outside music investor for Soundgarden’s master recordings. Cornell was in a partnership with his Soundgarden bandmates at the time of his death. Per the lawsuit, Cornell says she sent a demand letter to the band’s surviving members to buy out her late husband’s interests in Soundgarden and related entities.

Cornell and the surviving Soundgarden members have been in litigation in federal court since 2019 when Cornell filed a suit alleging they are wrongfully withholding royalty money owing to the Cornell estate.

Morgan Wallen’s ‘Dangerous’ earns the No. 1 spot on Billboard 200 for sixth week

Morgan Wallen Dangerous: The Double Album is No. 1 for a sixth week on the Billboard 200 as of Sunday (February 21). The run marks the most weeks atop the list for a male artist since Drake’s Views spent 13 nonconsecutive weeks at the top in 2016. Only three albums have spent at least six weeks at No. 1 in the last five years: Dangerous, Taylor Swift’s Folklore (eight nonconsecutive weeks, 2020) and Drake’s Views (13).

Earlier in the month, video footage surfaced of the 27-year-old Wallen using a racial slur, which resulted in him being suspended from his record label and ineligible for some music awards.
