Ronnie James Dio unreleased Black Sabbath demo “Slapback” surfaces

A previously unreleased Ronnie James Dio/Black Sabbath song from 1979 called “Slapback” has been shared online by the estate of late Sabbath keyboardist Geoff Nicholls. “Slapback” is the second track that Nicholls’ step-son Gary Rees has shared from a rehearsal recording that was made during the pre-production for the “Heaven and Hell” album.

Rees had this to say on YouTube: “This latest upload from the Geoff Nicholls estate I believe is called ‘Slapback’ from the scrawling on the cassette and the chorus. This is from the same cassette as the ‘Heaven & Hell’ upload on this channel. It doesn’t sound like a typical Sabbath song if it is them but it does sound like Ronnie James Dio. It must be a cover, any clues? I have no idea about anything I wasn’t there. Everything is speculation. Great tune by the way. Is it Ronnie on bass or ‘a friend from Birmingham’?”

Entombed A.D. have announced that frontman Lars-Göran Petrov has passed away at age 49. LG was diagnosed with ‘incurable’ bile duct cancer last year, stating that it “can’t be removed” but that doctors were “trying to control it with chemotherapy.”

Petrov’s bandmates posted a statement on social media which read: “We are devastated to announce that our beloved friend Lars-Göran Petrov has left us. Our brother, leader, vocalist, our Chief Rebel Angel went on another ride last night. It’s with the deepest sadness that we have to announce that Lars-Göran Petrov has left us. He was (is!!!) an incredible friend, and a person that has touched so many people. He has changed so many lives with his voice, his music, his character and his unique personality. LG’s smile is something that we will carry forever in our hearts. When asked in an interview what he would like to have written on his grave and what about his legacy, he said: “I will never die, it will never die.” And you didn’t. You will live forever in our hearts. ⁣⁣⁣R.I.P. LG Petrov.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle open up about Royal family in revealing interview with Oprah Winfrey

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spoke out about their exit from the royal family, revealing shocking details of their lives during a televised sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey. During the CBS special “Oprah With Meghan And Harry: A CBS Primetime Special,” 39-year-old Markle spoke about her beginnings as a royal, reflecting on meeting Queen Elizabeth II for the first time and addressing rumors of tensions between herself and sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. She also noted that she and Harry were actually married 3 days before their public wedding ceremony.

While it was reported at the time of Harry and Meghan’s son Archie’s birth in 2019 said the couple chose not to give Archie a title, Meghan claimed to Winfrey it was the royal institution’s decision to not give their son either a title or security protection.  Along with conversations about Archie’s title and security, there were also conversations with Harry ahead of his son’s birth about “how dark” his skin might be. Archie was the first American/British biracial royal born in the U.K.

Meghan also tearfully revealed there was a breaking point where she considered suicide before she and Harry decided to step away from their roles as senior working members of Britain’s royal family. Meghan claimed she went to “one of the most senior people” of the royal “institution” and was not able to get help for her mental health.

Prince Harry and Meghan shared some happy news as well, saying that the child they are expecting is a girl. Harry said, “To have any child, any one or any two, would have been amazing, but to have a boy and then a girl, I mean, what more can you ask for? Now we’ve got our family,” he said. “We’ve got, you know, the four of us and our two dogs.” The couple confirmed that Meghan is due to give birth this summer and said they don’t plan to have any more children after her arrival, saying, “Two is it.”

Buckingham Palace has not yet responded to claims made by Meghan and Harry in their interview with Winfrey.

High-ranking New York lawmakers call for Governor Cuomo’s resignation amid sexual harassment accusations

A group of New York’s top Democratic lawmakers are calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo to step down due to mounting sexual harassment claims, questioning his “ability to continue to lead” amid the ongoing scandals surrounding him. As of press time, five women have come forward – four of them former aides or advisers – claiming that Cuomo made inappropriate comments or came on to them. Attorney General Letitia James’ office is overseeing a review of the allegations against the governor.

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie made the unprecedented move Sunday, just hours after the governor declared that he has no intention of resigning. Stewart-Cousins said Cuomo’s behavior and the state’s handling of nursing homes during the pandemic have become too much of a distraction, adding in a statement: “New York is still in the midst of this pandemic and is still facing the societal, health and economic impacts of it. We need to govern without daily distraction. For the good of the state Gov. Cuomo must resign.” Heastie issued his own statement in agreement with Stewart-Cousins, saying: “We have many challenges to address, and I think it is time for the Governor to seriously consider whether he can effectively meet the needs of the people of New York.”

In a conference call with reporters on Sunday, Cuomo was combative and defiant, and said demands for his resignation was “anti-democratic,” adding, “There is no way I resign.” Earlier in the day the Governor said those seeking his resignation are doing so purely for political gain: “I have a news flash for you: There is politics in politics. They don’t override the people’s will. They don’t override elections.”

President Biden signs executive order expanding voting rights

On Sunday, President Joe Biden signed an executive order expanding voting access and information about voter registration. The order (which can be viewed in full here) aims to increase voting access to people with disabilities, active duty military and other overseas voters as well as citizens in federal custody in addition to modernizing voter information platforms and providing outreach to Native American communities. The order also directs the heads of all federal agencies to submit proposals promoting voter registration within 200 days by using their websites and social media to provide information on registering to vote and distributing voter registration and vote-by-mail applications in the course of regular services.

Biden noted the order was signed on the anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” when Black demonstrators, including the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis, were beaten by police while crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., in a demand for the right to vote In a pre-recorded speech that aired during the Martin and Coretta Scott King Unity Breakfast, Biden said: “Every eligible voter should be able to vote and have that vote counted. If you have the best ideas, you have nothing to hide. Let the people vote.”

Brooks Koepka withdraws from 2021 Players Championship due to knee injury

The PGA Tour announced Sunday that Brooks Koepka has withdrawn from the 2021 Players Championship because of a knee injury Koepka was originally slated to take part in a featured group alongside Patrick Reed and Jon Rahm.

Blake Smith, Koepka’s manager, provided an update on the star’s status: “Brooks strained his right knee and he is scheduled to further consult with doctors this week to receive a more extensive evaluation and outlook,” Smith said, per PGATour.com. “We will be able to provide additional updates and information as we learn more.” Koepka also didn’t compete in the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week at Bay Hill Club and Lodge near Orlando, Florida.

The 30-year-old Koepka revealed in October 2019 he had suffered a partially torn patellar tendon and underwent a procedure to address the injury at the conclusion of the 2019 season. He aggravated the injury when he slipped on wet concrete later that month, and proceeded to experience lingering hip and knee injuries throughout 2020 which ended his season early last August.

Blake Griffin to sign with Brooklyn Nets after clearing waivers

Blake Griffin is expected to sign with the Nets after clearing waivers. Griffin became an unrestricted free agent Friday after he and the Pistons agreed to a contract buyout. He has not played since Feb. 14 as he waited to be traded or bought out.

The 31-year-old, six-time NBA All-Star will join Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant and James Harden in Brooklyn. The Nets ended the first half of the season winning nine of their last 10 games despite a nine-game absence from Durant.

Griffin was traded to Detroit in 2018, six months after he signed a five-year, $171 million deal with the Clippers. While with the Pistons, Griffin averaged 24.5 points and 5.4 assists per game in his first full season in 2018-19.  However since then, Griffin has played in just 38 games over the last two seasons due to a series of injuries, averaging 13.9 points per game.  In 2020-21, Griffin averaged 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.
