Washington Nationals’ pitcher Jon Lester leaves spring training to have thyroid removed

Washington Nationals manager David Martinez said on Wednesday that pitcher Jon Lester has left the team’s spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Fla., to have his thyroid removed in New York City.

Martinez told reporters on a Zoom video conference, “If everything goes well, he’ll be back. Hopefully, he can pitch again in about a week. We wanted him to get it taken care of now so it’s not an issue.” Martinez said Lester, 37, felt fatigued during spring training. The team and Lester then reviewed medical test results and spoke to a doctor, who recommended surgery. Martinez said he expects Lester to be away from the team for at least five to seven days, at which point the team will reevaluate that timeline based on how the left-handed pitcher feels during his recovery.

The five-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion joined the Nationals in January as a free agent.  Lester was scheduled to start for the Nationals against the New York Mets on Thursday in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The Nationals still plan of having Lester ready for his first scheduled start of the season. he 15-year veteran had a 5.16 ERA and 3-3 record in 12 starts last season for the Chicago Cubs.

Dolly Parton receives first dose of COVID-19 vaccine

Country music icon Dolly Parton received her first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and shared her experience in a video posted to social media. Parton previously said that despite being eligible due to her age, she would wait to get vaccinated to give others more in need a chance to get their doses first. Dolly wrote on Twitter that she had gotten “a dose of her own medicine” — a reference to the fact that she previously donated $1 million toward vaccine development at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University.

Parton also urged others to get vaccinated as soon as possible, saying in the video: “I just want to say to all of you cowards out there: Don’t be such a chicken squat, get out there and get your shot.”

Parton’s longtime friend Dr. Naji Abumrad administered her shot. “That didn’t hurt! Just stung a little bit, but that was from the alcohol pad, I think,” Dolly remarked after receiving the vaccine.

Greta Van Fleet release live video for their latest single “Heat Above”

Greta Van Fleet has released a live video filmed in Nashville for their single “Heat Above.” The track comes from the band’s forthcoming album, “The Battle At Garden’s Gate” due out April 16th.

The band had the following to say about the new single, “‘Heat Above’ is theatrical, eloquent, and exaggerated. This is a dream in the clouds, a moment of peace in the storm. Thematically, we are dead center in the cult of Heaven, surreal, strange, alive and free.” Frontman Josh Kiszka adds, “There was a lot of self-evolution happening during the writing of this album that was prompted by experiences I had, experiences we all had.”
