Single-dose J&J COVID-19 vaccine to begin immediate roll-out after CDC approval

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory panel voted unanimously Sunday to recommend the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 single-shot vaccine for people 18 and older. During an emergency session, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices strongly endorsed the vaccine’s effectiveness in completely protecting against hospitalization and death. The federal government will be able to begin shipping doses, making a third COVID-19 vaccine available in the United States as early as this week. The new vaccine has a lower efficacy rate — 66% overall and 72% in the United States in preventing moderate to severe cases of COVID-19 — than the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines already in use.

Johnson & Johnson has said only a few million doses will be shipped to states in the days immediately after authorization, but production is expected to ramp up in the coming weeks, with 20 million doses due to be delivered by the end of March and 100 million total in the first half of the year. Johnson & Johnson also confirmed it will begin expanded trials for the vaccine on infants, newborns, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.

Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine can be kept at normal refrigerator temperatures. Pfizer’s vaccine had been stored and shipped at between minus 112 Fahrenheit to minus 76 though the FDA now says it can be held for two weeks at normal freezer temperatures. Moderna’s is kept in a home freezer.

Former President Trump hints at another presidential run as he delivers final speech at CPAC 2021

Former President Donald Trump hinted at another run for president in 2024 during his first speech since leaving office to close out the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday from Orlando, Fla.

Trump continued to falsely claim that he defeated President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and suggested that he “may even decide to beat them for a third time” while stopping short of officially declaring plans to run, saying in part, “I stand before you today to declare that the incredible journey we began together four years ago is far from over. We are gathered this afternoon to talk about the future — the future of our movement, the future of our party, and the future of our beloved country.”

Trump took aim at many members of the Republican party who sought to distance themselves from the former president especially in the wake of the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. Trump’s public statements has been limited since he was banned from most major social media platforms in the aftermath of the Capitol riot. However despite a divide amongst Republicans, Trump dismissed speculation that he would break away and form his own party, saying, “I am not starting a new party. That was fake news. Fake news, no. Wouldn’t that be brilliant? Let’s start a new party and let’s divide our vote so that you can never win. No, we’re not interested in that. The Republican Party is united. The only division is between a handful of Washington D.C., establishment political hacks and everybody else all over the country.”

Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and more wear red at WGC-Workday to honor Tiger Woods

Multiple golfers, including Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Tony Finau, wore red shirts and black pants in honor of Tiger Woods for Sunday’s final round of the WGC-Workday Championship in Bradenton, Fla. The 45-year-old Woods was involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash last week that left him with serious leg injuries including multiple “open fractures” to his lower right leg and had a rod put in his tibia. Woods is still hospitalized in Southern California.

The entire PGA Tour grounds crew at the Puerto Rico Championship donned red and black for Woods, who traditionally has worn those colors on Sunday dating back to the early parts of his professional career. Among the golfers who arrived in red Sunday were Jason Day, Tommy Fleetwood, Cameron Champ, Sebastian Munoz, Patrick Reed, McIlroy and Finau.  Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Kuchar and Day also used a Bridgestone golf ball with Woods’ name stamped on the side to further honor the legendary golfer.

24-year-old Collin Morikawa finished at 18-under par to win the WGC-Workday Championship on Sunday. Brooks Koepka, Viktor Hovland and Billy Horschel were 15-under par to end in a tie for second.
