President Biden meets with German Chancellor Angela Merkel as she prepares to leave office

President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met on Thursday during what is likely to be her last visit to Washington as the head of state before she leaves office.  Biden praised Merkel, noting she was Germany’s first female chancellor, whose tenure lasted through four American presidents. At a White House news conference, Biden lauded Merkel’s tenure as “strong, principled leadership” and for “never failing to defend human dignity. Here’s an exemplary life of groundbreaking service to Germany, and I might add … to the world.”

However there were many issues on the political agenda when the two leaders sat down for a private one-on-one meeting, including the split between the U.S. and Germany over Nord Stream 2, the gas pipeline that would run from Russia to Germany. Biden said he raised concerns about the pipeline with Merkel and that the two leaders agreed to look for “practical measures” that could be taken to ensure energy is not used as coercive tool against Ukraine or other allies.

Other issues discussed was the United State’s refusal to lift its pandemic restrictions on travel, despite Germany, France and other EU countries seeing COVID cases plummet amid vaccination rollouts. Biden suggested a decision on the travel ban could be coming in a matter of days, answering a German reporter: “It’s in the process now. I’m waiting to hear from … our COVID team as to when that should be done.” Merkel noted the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus was a factor, saying it has been a challenge for both the U.S. and Germany.

Dozens missing, over 40 people dead after historic flooding in western Germany

Severe flooding in Western Europe after the area experienced levels of rain not seen in a century caused over 40 deaths in Germany as flash floods swept through the countries, causing buildings to collapse.  At least six died in Belgium, and the neighboring countries of Luxembourg and the Netherlands were also affected.

Authorities said at least 28 people died in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and 18 people died in the district of Ahrweiler.  Police said as many as 50 people in Germany were trapped on rooftops while at least 70 people are missing. The German Weather Service on Wednesday had issued a warning of extreme precipitation for the western region of the country.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a statement: “I am shocked by the catastrophe that so many people in the flood areas have to suffer. My condolences go out to the relatives of the dead and missing. I thank the many tireless helpers and emergency services from the bottom of my heart.”

U.S. President Joe Biden, who met with Merkel as she visited the White House on Thursday, said: “I want to express to you and to the people of Germany my sincere condolences and the condolence of the American people for the devastating loss of life and the destruction due to the flooding over the past 24 hours in Germany and neighboring countries. It’s a tragedy and our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones.”

Thursday’s Yankees vs. Red Sox game postponed due to positive COVID-19 cases in Yankees organization

A release sent out by Major League Baseball confirmed the postponement of Thursday night’s series opener between the Yankees and Red Sox as the Yankees organization manages a developing COVID-19 issue. The MLB said that there are multiple positive COVID-19 tests within the Yankees organization, and they will be going through continued testing and contact tracing.

Shortly after the announcement, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman revealed the three players who tested positive for COVID-19 — pitchers Jonathan Loaisiga, Nestor Cortes and Wandy Peralta.  The three have already been placed on the COVID-19 injured list, and have all previously been vaccinated. Cashman added that at least three other members of the player population have pending COVID-19 test results.

The status of Friday’s game against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium is currently up in the air; results of pending tests will play a role in deciding whether or not an additional game will be postponed.

OT Taylor Moton signs 4-year, $72M extension with Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers announced Thursday afternoon that they have agreed to a four-year, $72 million extension with OT Taylor Moton that will keep him under contract through 2025. Had a deal not been reached before 4 PM, Moton would have played the 2021 season under the franchise tag, paying him $13.8 million guaranteed. Following the season, Moton would have been eligible for free agency next March. The multi-year contract extension will reportedly make Moton one of the highest-paid right tackles in the league.

The 26-year-old Moton started every game since the beginning of his second season, and was the Panthers’ most consistent offensive lineman last season. He also was the only tackle in the NFL with more than 450 pass protection snaps to not allow a single QB hit in 2020.

Jennifer Carpenter to return for Showtime’s ‘Dexter’ revival as Dexter’s sister

Jennifer Carpenter will return for Showtime’s ‘Dexter’ revival. The actress played Dexter Morgan’s sister Deb Morgan for all eight seasons of the original Showtime series, and was famously killed off in the 2013 series finale. Carpenter isn’t the only character to return from the dead — John Lithgow, who won an Emmy for his role as the Trinity Killer, is also returning. Both Carpenter and Lithgow are expected to appear in flashback scenes.

Showtime’s 10-episode revival is set 10 years after Dexter (portrayed by Michael C. Hall) went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, with the character now living under an assumed name in Upstate New York.  The series ended in 2013 with Dexter going on self-imposed exile as a lumberjack in Oregon and living a solitary life, a finale which many fans harshly criticized.  Original showrunner Clyde Phillips returns for the revival, and he said: “We basically do get to start from scratch. … Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale.”

The ‘Dexter’ revival is expected to debut this fall on Showtime.
