President Biden says U.S. is committed to getting all Americans out of Afghanistan, willing to extend August 31 deadline for total withdrawal

President Joe Biden said the U.S. is committed to getting every American out of Afghanistan, even if it means potentially extending the mission beyond his Aug. 31 deadline for a total withdrawal. In an interview with ABC News, anchor George Stephanopoulos asked Biden: “We’ve got like 10 to 15,000 Americans in the country right now. Right? And are you committed to making sure that the troops stay until every American who wants to be out is out?”  to which Biden replied, “Yes.”

The president did cautioned that his focus is on completing the mission by Aug. 31, but conceded to Stephanopoulos that the mission could take longer. Biden also told Stephanopoulos that in addition to the 10,000 to 15,000 Americans who need to be evacuated, there are between 50,000 and 65,000 Afghans and their families the U.S. also wants to get out. “The commitment holds to get everyone out that, in fact, we can get out and everyone who should come out. And that’s the objective. That’s what we’re doing now. That’s the path we’re on. And I think we’ll get there,” Biden said.

The Biden administration has come under fire for the chaotic situation in Afghanistan as control of the country quickly fell to the Taliban while the deadline for the final U.S. withdrawal approached.

Nebraska’s head coach Scott Frost under investigation for NCAA violations

The NCAA is investigating Nebraska and head coach Scott Frost for alleged “improper use of analysts and consultants during practices and games.”  The allegations against Nebraska and Frost date back 12 months; the program reportedly improperly used analysts and consultants during special team drills during Nebraska practices, where Jonathan Rutledge worked with players despite not being one of the team’s 10 full-time assistants.

According to the investigation: “Last year, Frost put Rutledge in charge of the special teams as the senior special teams analyst, even though Rutledge was not one of Nebraska’s 10 full-time on-field assistants. NCAA rules allow analysts to speak to assistants and the head coach, but analysts may not have direct contact with the players. This includes practices, film room hours and during games. However, the school has significant video footage documenting the impermissible use of analysts and consultants while assistant coaches and Frost were on the field or on the sideline.”

Frost is also accused of reportedly holding unauthorized organized workouts during the COVID-19 crisis last season. It’s unknown whether those allegations are being investigated by the NCAA. Frost could reportedly face a suspension for Nebraska’s improper use of analysts.

Oakland A’s pitcher Chris Bassitt released from hospital after suffering cheek fracture from line drive

The Oakland A’s announced that pitcher Chris Bassitt was released from the hospital with a cheek fracture after being hit in the face by a line drive.  During the second inning of Oakland’s 9-0 loss to the White Sox, Bassitt fell to the ground while clutching his head after he was struck by Brian Goodwin’s hit back to the mound. Before he was carted off the field to be transported to the hospital, Bassitt remained on the ground for several minutes as trainers applied pressure to his face. In a postgame press conference, A’s manager Bob Melvin said Bassitt remained conscious “the entire time.”

The A’s said in a statement: “[Bassitt] received stitches for two facial lacerations and was diagnosed with a displaced tripod fracture in his right cheek that will require surgery. An exam of his right eye was normal for vision, and no other damage is currently noted in the eye or the orbital bone. In addition, a head CT scan revealed no further injury.” On Wednesday afternoon, Bassitt released his first statement since the incident, thanking both teams and hospital staff for the support he received.

Bassitt will undergo surgery in the next three to five days “after swelling subsides.” The club said there is no timetable on his return.

Garth Brooks cancels five stadium shows due to Covid delta variant

Garth Brooks has announced the cancellation of five stadium shows across the United States. The announcement affects shows in Foxborough, Charlotte, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Nashville as he cited concerns with the COVID pandemic and the spreading delta variant.

The 59-year-old Brooks said in a statement: “In July, I sincerely thought the pandemic was falling behind us. Now, watching this new wave, I realize we are still in the fight and I must do my part.” nBrooks added: “But with a hopeful heart, we will reschedule and start over when this wave seems to be behind us,” concluding, “I’m sincerely hoping we are back on tour before the year’s end. With that said, the most important thing to me is fulfilling my end of the Stadium Tour by making sure every show is doable before putting tickets on sale (that is why we pulled the Seattle on sale) and making sure the environment these people are trading their time and money to put themselves into is not only the best experience ever, but also the safest one we can provide.”

Earlier this year, Brooks’ wife and fellow country music superstar, Trisha Yearwood, tested positive for COVID-19, forcing the pair to quarantine. Prior to embarking on his stadium tour, Brooks and his team were fully vaccinated, and he has strict internal guidelines set in place to keep his band and crew safe from the virus. Since late July, Brooks has performed in Las Vegas, Nashville, Salt Lake City, Cheyenne, Wyoming and Lincoln, Nebraska.

Actress Laura Prepon reveals she no longer practices Scientology

“Orange is the New Black” star Laura Prepon revealed to People magazine that she hasn’t practiced the controversial religion Scientology since becoming a mother to her two children, who are 4 years and 16 months old. Prepon was just one of the famous celebrities tied to Scientology, and was even rumored to be dating one of the most prominent Scientologists, actor Tom Cruise, in 2014.

Said the 41-year-old Prepon: “I’m no longer practicing Scientology. I’ve always been very open-minded, even since I was a child. I was raised Catholic and Jewish. I’ve prayed in churches, meditated in temples. I’ve studied Chinese meridian theory. I haven’t practiced Scientology in close to five years and it’s no longer part of my life.”

Prepon also told the magazine that she meditates with her husband, actor Ben Foster: “We meditate daily and I’m really liking it,” she said. “Because it’s something that helps me to hear my own voice and it’s something we can do together.”  Prepon and Foster tied the knot in June 2018 after welcoming their daughter Ella in August 2017. In October 2019, Prepon announced she was pregnant with the couple’s second child.

Alyssa Milano shares details of car accident involving uncle who suffered heart attack

Alyssa Milano took to social media to confirm that she was involved in a car accident after her uncle Mitchell Carp suffered a heart attack. The 48-year-old actress wrote on Instagram: “Yesterday, my family suffered a terrifying and traumatic event. I was a passenger in a car my uncle Mitch was driving when he suffered a serious heart attack, resulting in a car crash. I am grateful to the people who stopped to help us. I’ll never be able to thank them enough for the care and attention they, along with the first responders, doctors, nurses, and staff at UCLA Medical Center paid to him and to me.”

Milano and Carp were on a Los Angeles freeway on Tuesday, August 17, when another vehicle hit their car and he became unconscious behind the wheel. Milano hit the brakes of the 2020 Ford Edge with her hand, but the SUV drifted and collided with a car in another lane before stopping. She gave her uncle CPR until first responders arrived.

Milano continued her Instagram post, saying: “Uncle Mitch is such an important part of our family. He’s with us every day, spending time with my children and present in every meaningful part of our lives. He’s still in the hospital, and we are unsure if he will recover. Please, take this as your inspiration to get CPR certified. You don’t know when you’ll be called upon to save a life. The American Red Cross and many hospitals and other organizations offer regular classes. It’s such a small effort and can have a huge impact.”

Garbage announce 20th Anniversary reissue of their third studio album “beautifulgarbage” on October 1st

Garbage have today announced details of their upcoming 20th anniversary reissue of the band’s third studio album, “beautifulgarbage.”  The reissue will be released on October 1st, exactly twenty years after the album was first available. The band have also revealed a previously unheard version of the album’s lead single “Androgyny.” You can listen to it – here.

Shirley Manson says of the “beautifulgarbage” reissue: ‘We wanted to celebrate the release of our third album in the same manner as we have celebrated the 20th anniversaries of our previous two records, as we cherish this third child of ours just as much as its predecessors. Over time it has garnered more and more respect from our fans, with many of the songs remaining in rotation in our live sets to this day. We’ve always felt incredibly proud of this record and felt it was in many ways very much ahead of its time. Twenty years down the line, we are all exceedingly grateful to have such well-crafted songs in our discography and are very proud that against all the odds we are still standing and can give our beloved album the tribute it so very much deserves’.

“beautifulgarbage” was written and recorded over the course of a year. The brand-new edition has been remastered from the original recordings; the deluxe vinyl edition includes “beautifulgarbage” on 2x heavyweight black LPs, as well as a third LP of B-sides and memorabilia. The two 2LP formats have been pressed on heavyweight black and special white vinyl respectively.

Garbage’s 20th anniversary reissue of “beautifulgarbage” can be pre-ordered at the link
