U.S. working to give third COVID-19 booster shots to at-risk Americans

U.S. infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday that the United States is working to give additional COVID-19 booster shots to Americans with compromised immune systems as quickly as possible, as cases of the novel coronavirus continue to rise. The United States will join Germany, France and Israel in giving booster shots. U.S. regulators need to fully authorize the COVID-19 vaccines or amend their emergency use authorizations before officials can recommend additional shots, but the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working to make third doses available sooner under certain circumstances.

Fauci said rising cases resulting from the spread of the contagious Delta variant in the United States can be turned around with additional vaccinations. The seven U.S. states – Florida, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi – with the lowest COVID-19 vaccination rates account for half of the country’s new cases and hospitalizations in the last week, the White House said on Thursday. Of those, Florida and Texas account for about a third of new coronavirus cases and an even higher share of hospitalizations in the country.

COVID cases are up about 43% over the previous week and daily deaths are up more than 39%, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky. The United States hit a six-month high for new COVID cases with over 100,000 infections reported on Wednesday alone.

Barcelona announces that star forward Lionel Messi will not be returning to club

Spanish soccer club FC Barcelona announced on Thursday that star forward Lionel Messi will not return to the team after the two sides could not finalize a new contract. The 34-year-old Messi has been a free agent since his previous contract expired June 30. It was reported in July that Messi and Barcelona tentatively agreed on a five-year extension; however, Barcelona has been unable to register Messi’s new pact with La Liga while complying with the Spanish soccer league’s financial fair play rules. Determined by La Liga, Spanish clubs must abide by a certain spending limit, which includes money spent on salaries and signings.

Barcelona said in a news release: “Despite having reached an agreement with Messi and with both parties clearly wanting to sign a new contract, it cannot be finalized due to financial and structural obstacles,” “Given this situation, Messi will not continue his relationship with Barcelona. Both parties lament deeply that the desires of the player and the club cannot be met. Barca would like to wholeheartedly thank the player for his contribution to the growth of the institution and wish him the best in his personal and professional life.”  Barcelona’s spending limit dropped from more than $700 million to about $410 million since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the club’s salary cap is expected to decrease again for the 2021-22 season.

Messi, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest soccer players ever, has scored a club-record 672 goals and has helped Barcelona capture 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies.

NY Yankees catcher Gary Sánchez becomes latest player to test positive for COVID-19

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed on Thursday that catcher Gary Sánchez has tested positive for COVID-19. Sánchez left the ballpark on Wednesday night not feeling well, said Boone, and the positive diagnosis came on a rapid test. Sánchez joins starting pitchers Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery as those that have tested positive during this third outbreak of the season for New York. Backup catcher Kyle Higashioka will make his second start in a row behind the plate.

In May, New York had eight personnel test positive within the organization. Last month, six players including Aaron Judge, Gio Urshela and Jonathan Loaisiga were diagnosed with COVID-19. With three outbreaks this season, the Yankee organization has been hit harder by COVID-19 as compared to other organizations around the league. The Yankees eclipsed the 85 percent vaccination threshold early this season, meaning the majority of positive tests have been breakthrough cases.

Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Sam Elliott to star in ‘Yellowstone’ prequel series

Paramount+, the streaming service from ViacomCBS, and MTV Entertainment Studios announced that Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill will star in the upcoming original series “1883,” the highly anticipated prequel series to the critically acclaimed “Yellowstone.”

1883 “follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana.”  Elliott will portray Shea Brennan, a “tough as nails, handsome cowboy with immense sadness in his past. He has the herculean task of guiding a group from Texas to Montana, and he does not suffer fools.”  McGraw and Hill will portray James and Margaret Dutton, the patriarch and matriarch of the Dutton family. ,Additional cast will soon be announced.

Said Elliott: “It all starts with the writing, and Taylor Sheridan is a brilliant writer. I think the western genre speaks clearly to both of us. The classic struggles of man against man, man against nature, and man against himself. It’s all there, in 1883, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts drops out of 2021 tour due to medical reasons

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has dropped out of the band’s 2021 ‘No Filter’ tour following a medical procedure. The official Rolling Stones Twitter account made the announcement on Thursday.  Watts will be replaced on the tour by Steve Jordan.

A spokesman for the Watts said in a statement: “Charlie has had a procedure which was completely successful, but I gather his doctors this week concluded that he now needs proper rest and recuperation. With rehearsals starting in a couple of weeks it’s very disappointing to say the least, but it’s also fair to say no one saw this coming.”  Said Watts: “For once my timing has been a little off. I am working hard to get fully fit but I have today accepted on the advice of the experts that this will take a while. After all the fans’ suffering caused by COVID I really do not want the many fans who have been holding tickets for this tour to be disappointed by another postponement or cancelation. I have therefore asked my great friend Steve Jordan to stand in for me.”

Bass player Keith Richards posted on Twitter: “This has been a bit of a blow to all of us, to say the least and we’re all wishing for Charlie to have a speedy recovery and to see him as soon as possible. Thank you to Steve Jordan for joining us in the meantime.”

The No Filter tour will kick-off on Sept. 26 in St. Louis before wrapping up on Nov. 20 in Austin, Texas.
