Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ debuts at No.1 with highest first-week sales in 2021

Billboard reports that Drake’s sixth studio album ‘Certified Lover Boy’ has secured the best first week sales of 2021 with 613,000 units sold.

‘Certified Lover Boy’ is Drake’s 10th No. 1 album and the biggest album debut since Taylor Swift’s ‘folklore’ debuted with 846,000 units in August 2020. Certified Lover Boy bumped the previous No. 1 album, Donda by Kanye West, down one spot to No. 2. Donda moved 309,000 equivalent album units in its first week, which made it the biggest debut of 2021, until now. It appears that Drake’s album nearly doubled the sales of Donda’s debut.

Justice Department restricts use of chokeholds and ‘no-knock’ warrants

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Tuesday that the Justice Department will tighten restrictions on when its agencies can use chokeholds, carotid restraints and no-knock entries. Garland said: “Building trust and confidence between law enforcement and the public we serve is central to our mission at the Justice Department. The limitations implemented today on the use of ‘chokeholds,’ ‘carotid restraints’ and ‘no-knock’ warrants, combined with our recent expansion of body-worn cameras to DOJ’s federal agents, are among the important steps the department is taking to improve law enforcement safety and accountability.”

Under the new guidelines, federal law enforcement agents will be prohibited from using chokeholds and carotid restraints unless the use of deadly force is authorized. The Justice Department allows such force “when the officer has a reasonable belief that the subject of such force poses an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury to the officer or to another person.”  The new Justice Department policies also limits the use of no-knock entries to the execution of warrants in situations where agents believing knocking and announcing before entry would create threat of physical violence.

The use of chokeholds has been under scrutiny after the 2014 death of New York City man Eric Garner, who died of compression of his neck and chest and his prone positioning on the ground as New York City Police officer Daniel Pantaleo held him in a chokehold on the ground. Garner, who had asthma, repeatedly told the police “I can’t breathe.”

Senate Democrats introduce new voting rights bill

On Tuesday, a group of eight Senate Democrats introduced their latest version of a sweeping election reform bill to counter the record-number of voting restrictions that have passed in GOP-led states, which they say make it harder for minorities and low-income Americans to cast a ballot.

Now known as the ‘Freedom to Vote Act,’ the modified bill is a compromise after the previous For The People Act failed to pass in the Senate last June. The new bill was crafted by a group that included moderate Sen Joe Manchin, a key swing vote, after he opposed an earlier version of the legislation charging that it was too broad and lacked bipartisan support. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Monday on the Senate floor that he intends to hold a vote to proceed to the compromise measure as early as next week, which would require 60 senators to support advancing to the bill. It’s unclear whether Democrats can garner the support of 10 Republicans, though Schumer said that Manchin has been discussing the bill with GOP senators.

The bill would aim to promote voter confidence and access by “requiring a uniform national standard for states that requires identification for in-person voting, and allowing voters to present a broad set of identification cards and documents in hard copy and digital form,” a summary of the measure says.

Aaron Gordon agrees to 4-year, $92M extension with the Denver Nuggets

Forward Aaron Gordon has agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Denver Nuggets worth $92 million — $88 million in base salary and $4 million in incentives — over the four years. The deal also includes a player option for the fourth year in 2025-26.

Gordon was traded to the Nuggets in March, and in return Denver sent shooting guard Gary Harris, rookie guard R.J. Hampton and a protected 2025 first-round draft pick to the Orlando Magic. The 25-year-old Gordon averaged 12.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists with the Magic and Nuggets last season. In the playoffs, he had averages of 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds as the Nuggets reached the second round before being swept by the Phoenix Suns. In 453 career games (366 starts), Gordon has averaged 12.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

San Francisco 49ers RB Raheem Mostert to have season-ending knee surgery

San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert took to social media on Tuesday to announce that a knee injury he suffered during the season opener vs. the Detroit Lions will end his 2021 season. Said Mostert: “This gives me, without a doubt in my mind, the best possibility at coming back 110%. I have ALWAYS come back stronger and I will this time too! I have faith in myself, my doctors, my support system, my team, and God.”

Mostert, 29, suffered the injury in Sunday’s 41-33 victory over the Detroit Lions. He carried twice for 20 yards on San Francisco’s second possession, but headed to the sideline soon after a 9-yard gain on the second play of the series. On Monday, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Mostert would miss approximately eight weeks with “chipped cartilage” in a knee that would require arthroscopic surgery; however Mostert sought multiple opinions to ensure when he does come back, he will be at full strength. Those additional opinions pointed him in the direction of a surgery that will require a longer recovery time.

With Mostert done for the season, the 49ers signed running back Kerryon Johnson to their practice squad Tuesday. Mostert is in the final season of a three-year, $8.65 million deal he signed in 2019; he was limited to eight games in 2020 as knee and ankle sprains cost him two and six games, respectively. He entered this year as the Niners’ unquestioned top back but the team began planning for the future by selecting Sermon in the third round and Mitchell in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Saturday Night Live’s Norm Macdonald dies at age 61 following private cancer battle

Comedian Norm Macdonald has died at 61 after a private nine-year battle with cancer. Macdonald’s longtime friend Lori Jo Hoekstra told Deadline that the former Saturday Night Live cast member died Tuesday morning, adding that the comedian was determined to keep his cancer battle private from family, friends and fans. Hoekstra told the outlet: “He was most proud of his comedy. He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.” Norm is survived by his son, Dylan.

The Canadian-born comedian began his career as a writer on The Dennis Miller Show and Roseanne in the early 1990s, where he was noticed by SNL producer Lorne Michaels. Macdonald was a cast member on the sketch comedy show for five years, from 1993 through 1998, three of which he spent anchoring the ‘Weekend Update’ segment. He also hosted “The Norm Show” from 1999 to 2001, and had roles in “Billy Madison”, “Dirty Work”, “Man on the Moon”, “Skylanders Academy” and “The Orville”.
