Florida judge rules against Governor DeSantis’ appeal; will allow schools to require ma

On Wednesday, a Florida judge ordered that schools can issue mask mandates, ruling against Gov. Ron DeSantis while the appeals court sorts out the legality of the governor’s ban. Leon County Judge John Cooper ruled to vacate an automatic stay given to the state after it appealed his previous decision stating that DeSantis’s executive order banning school mandates is unconstitutional.

DeSantis’s order allowed parents to decide if they want their kids to wear masks to school rather than have local school districts make the decision, prompting a lawsuit brought by a group of parents in favor of school mask mandates. DeSantis said last week he believes the state will win in the 1st District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee because of a new state law, the Parents Bill of Rights, which he said gives parents the final authority on their children’s health. “We’ll end up getting it back,” the governor told reporters. “Obviously [Cooper’s ruling], it’s problematic.”

School boards in 13 districts in Florida have voted to defy the order and chose to require masks because of the virus resurgence; however they faced the possibility of having their salaries withheld. The Biden administration had promised federal funds for any district that lost money for requiring masks.

NXIVM cult co-founder Nancy Salzman sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison

Nancy Salzman, a former nurse who co-founded and once ran the cult-like NXIVM group, was sentenced Wednesday to 42 months in prison. Salzman, 67, the former president and co-founder of NXIVM, must also pay a $150,000 fine. Salzman has agreed to forfeit more than $500,000 in cash, several properties and a Steinway grand piano.

U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis ordered that Salzman must report to prison by Jan. 19; her lawyers said she has been caring for her ailing mother. Salzman’s crimes involved stealing identities of the group’s critics and hacking into their email accounts from 2003 to 2008, prosecutors said. She was also accused of conspiring to doctor videos showing her teaching NXIVM lessons before the recordings were turned over to plaintiffs in a New Jersey lawsuit against the group.

Speaking in Brooklyn federal court, Salzman said she fell under NXIVM leader Keith Raniere’s spell when they started working together 20 years ago and that she started rationalizing and overlooking the wrongdoing she saw around her. Salzman pleaded guilty in March 2019 to charges of racketeering conspiracy that involved conspiracy to commit identity theft and conspiracy to obstruct justice. She was one of the first in the group’s leadership to plead guilty to criminal charges. Raniere was sentenced last October to 120 years in prison for turning some women into sex slaves branded with his initials and sexually abusing a 15-year-old.

Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby to miss at least six weeks due to wrist surgery

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby will miss a minimum of six weeks after undergoing a procedure on his left wrist Wednesday, which likely means that Crosby will not be ready for the Penguins’ season opener Oct. 12 vs. the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Penguins general manager Ron Hextall said in a statement: “This is not a new injury for Sid. It is something that he has played through for years. After exhausting all minimally-invasive options and much discussion, it was decided that surgery was in his best interest.”

Crosby, 34, is entering his 17th NHL season; the three-time Stanley Cup champion and two-time league MVP has 1,325 points (486 goals, 839 assists) in his career. In 2020-21, Crosby played in 55 games and tallied 24 goals and 38 assists for Pittsburgh.

NY Yankees Derek Jeter finally inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame

New York Yankees great Derek Jeter was finally officially inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday, along with Larry Walker, Ted Simmons and late labor pioneer Marvin Miller. Wednesday’s event was baseball’s first induction ceremony since July 21, 2019; the 2020 ceremony was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2021 ceremony was postponed so that fans would be in attendance.

Jeter, the celebrated captain of the NY Yankees, led baseball’s most storied franchise to seven pennants and five World Series titles during a 20-year career in which he had 3,465 hits, the sixth-highest total in big league history. He began his speech by thanking his family, saying that his father “was my first idol” and recounting how as a child he developed an early love for the Yankees by playing whiffle ball in the backyard in full pinstripes, while imitating former Yankee Dave Winfield.

Jeter has long said that the only thing he ever wanted to do in baseball was to play shortstop for the New York Yankees, and that doing so was “one of the greatest honors of my life.” He added that his goal as a Yankee was to “win more than everybody else — and we did.” Closing out his acceptance speech, Jeter said: “It’s been a hell of a ride.”

Actress Olivia Munn and comedian John Mulaney expecting their first child together

Comedian John Mulaney revealed that he and actress Olivia Munn, who began dating earlier this year, are expecting a baby together. Mulaney appeared on “Late Night with Seth Meyers”, and opened up about the past year — which included a drug relapse, rehabilitation, a divorce from ex-wife Anna Marie Tendler, and his relationship with Munn.

Mulaney said of Munn, “She held my hand through that hell, and we are having a baby, together. I’m gonna be a dad! I’m really — we’re both really, really happy.” He also shared how Munn has helped keep him sober and healthy as he recovers from addiction, saying, “Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself.”

John and Olivia initially met at Meyer’s wedding in 2013, but the couple’s relationship did not begin until May, shortly after Mulaney and his ex-wife of six years had split.   The baby will be the first child for both John and Olivia.
