President Biden approves disaster declarations for NYC, New Jersey after Ida flooding

President Biden approved major disaster declarations in New York City and New Jersey following last week’s catastrophic flash flooding due to remnants from Hurricane Ida. The storm dropped historic rainfall on a large swath of the northeast stretching from Philadelphia to Massachusetts and hit the New York City metropolitan area particularly hard, with the entire region under a flash flood emergency for most of the night Wednesday. Flash flooding flooded homes, roads and apartments, and at least 41 people died in the storm, with officials still looking for some people who are still missing.

Biden is set to visit New York City and Manville, New Jersey on Tuesday to survey the damage of these hard-hit areas. The disaster declarations cover Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Westchester County in New York as well as Bergen, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Passaic and Somerset counties in New Jersey. The disaster declarations means that residents and business owners affected by flooding and other damage can apply for a bevy of Federal Emergency Management Administration programs to clean up, make repairs and get temporary housing.

On Sunday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Wednesday’s storm caused at least $50 million in damages. In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Sen. Chuck Schumer and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spent part of the morning touring of storm damage in Queens with Deanne Criswell, the former city emergency management chief who’s now administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. At least 17 people died in New York following Ida’s historic and devastating flooding last week.

Department of Justice vows protection of women seeking abortions in Texas

The Justice Department vowed Monday to protect the safety of women seeking access to reproductive health care in Texas. In a statement, Attorney General Merrick Garland said he will tap “support from federal law enforcement” if an “abortion clinic or reproductive health center is under attack” and said the DOJ will explore “all options” to challenge the state’s strict new abortion law.

Garland, citing authority under the 1994 Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act — or FACE Act — said the federal government will not tolerate any “threat of force and physical obstruction that injures, intimidates, or interferes with a person seeking to obtain or provide reproductive health services.” Garland added that the Justice Department will “protect the constitutional rights of women and other persons, including access to an abortion” as the Biden administration seeks to challenge the Texas law, known as Senate Bill 8.

Signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in May, ‘SB8’ outlaws abortions when a heartbeat is detectable, which is about six weeks into a pregnancy. It will deny the procedure to about 85% of patients who seek it in the state. The ban is enforced by members of the public who are able to sue anyone who provides or is involved in aiding and performing abortions barred by SB8, including anyone who drives a patient to the procedure. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court voted against an emergency petition from abortion providers and advocates to block the law.

Baltimore Ravens sign tight end Mark Andrews to 4-year, $56M extension

The Baltimore Ravens and tight end Mark Andrews have agreed to a four-year, $56 million contract extension.
Andrews is expected to earn more money than any tight end in football from 2022-25. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement: “We are thrilled to announce a four-year contract extension with Mark Andrews on his birthday. Mark is exactly the type of player we wish to keep as a Raven long-term. He’s competitive, passionate, talented and a leader. We are so excited to have him in Baltimore for the next five years. Congratulations to Mark and his family — and happy birthday.”

The 26-year-old Andrews was selected by the Ravens in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft, and emerged as Lamar Jackson’s top target in 2019, tallying 64 receptions and 10 touchdowns as Baltimore’s quarterback won MVP. Andrews has scored 20 touchdowns since entering the NFL, and he’s averaged 8.9 yards per target over the course of his career.

UConn’s head coach Randy Edsall will step down immediately after announcing his retirement at end of season

On Monday, UConn announced that coach Randy Edsall will step down immediately as the football program’s head coach; defensive coordinator Lou Spanos will serve as interim head coach. Spanos has never served as a head coach before, and has served as UConn’s defensive coordinator since 2009.

On Sunday, Edsall had announced that he would retire at the end of the season. However, UConn athletic director Davi Benedict said in the statement: “Upon further reflection by both Randy and I, and after having the opportunity to visit with Randy today, we are both in agreement that it is in the best interest of our student-athletes to have a new voice leading UConn football”.

With just two games into the season, Edsall’s second stint with the Huskies will now come to an end.  Edsall went 74-70 at UConn from 1999 to 2010 before leaving for Maryland where he went 22-34. Since returning in 2017, the Huskies are 6–32 with Edsall at the helm, including a 45-0 loss to Fresno State and a 38-28 loss to Holy Cross, an FCS school, to start the 2021 season. Edsall said in his statement on Sunday: “Back in 2017 I made a commitment to the University, but felt it was better to make this announcement now rather than the end of the year, to allow the university ample time to prepare for the future of the football program. All my focus and attention for the rest of the season will be to prepare our players and coaches to go out and win as many games as possible.”
