Rush’s Geddy Lee to release new memoir in Fall 2022

Geddy Lee has announced that he will release a memoir slated for fall 2022. In an Instagram post, the bassist explained that the idea for a memoir came from his lockdown in Toronto during the pandemic. Lee wrote: “So, how did I kill time during the pandemic? Little did I know that as of March 2020 I’d be locked down for over a year and a half — the longest time I’d spent in Toronto since I was 19 and hit the Northern Ontario bar circuit with Rush.” He added: “I began to write. Words, that is.”

Lee also said that the memoir helped him grieve the death of his bandmate Neil Peart, who died months before the pandemic in January 2020. “My friend and collaborator on the Big Beautiful Book of Bass, Daniel Richler, saw how I was struggling in the aftermath of Neil’s passing, and tried coaxing me out of my blues with some funny tales from his youth, daring me to share my own in return,” he wrote. “So I did — reluctantly at first, but then remembering, oh yeah, I like wrestling with words.”

Pfizer says its COVID-19 vaccine in lower dosage is safe and effective in kids ages 5 to 11

Pfizer said Monday its COVID-19 vaccine is effective for children ages 5 to 11, and that it will seek U.S. authorization for this age group soon. The vaccine made by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech already is available for anyone 12 and older. For elementary school-aged kids, Pfizer tested a much lower dose, equal to a third of the amount that’s in each shot given now.  However after their second dose, children ages 5 to 11 developed coronavirus-fighting antibody levels just as strong as teenagers and young adults said Dr. Bill Gruber, a Pfizer senior vice president. The children’s dosage also proved safe, with similar or fewer temporary side effects — such as sore arms, fever or lethargy — that teens experience, he said.  Dr. Gruber said the companies aim to apply to the Food and Drug Administration by the end of the month for emergency use in this age group, followed shortly afterward with applications to European and British regulators.

While kids are at lower risk of severe illness or death than older people, more than 5 million children in the U.S. have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began and at least 460 have died, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Cases in children have risen dramatically as the Delta variant swept through the country.

U.S. to allow vaccinated foreign travelers back into the country with proof of negative COVID-19 test

The White House announced Monday that the U.S. will begin allowing foreign travelers into the country in November if they provide proof of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test. The new policy will replace various restrictions that have been in effect since last year, which barred U.S. entry for foreign travelers if they’d spent any of the previous 14 days in Britain, the European Union, China, India, Iran, Ireland, Brazil and South Africa.

Under the new policy, foreign travelers will be required to show proof of vaccination before they board a U.S.-bound flight and a negative coronavirus test no older than three days. Vaccinated U.S. residents traveling abroad will also need to show a negative test to return — and unvaccinated Americans will have to test one day before their flight, and must test again once they return.

New York Yankees pitcher Luis Severino activated for first time in nearly two years

The New York Yankees right-hander Luis Severino, who hasn’t thrown a big-league pitch since the 2019 season, was activated prior to Monday’s series opener. The 27-year-old Severino has missed nearly two years recovering from Tommy John surgery, in addition to a prolonged absence during the 2019 season because of shoulder issues. Severino has made only three regular-season appearances since finishing ninth in Cy Young Award balloting back in 2018; his most recent regular-season appearance occurred on September 28, 2019.

When Severino is healthy, he’s been one of the better pitchers in the league. In 99 career appearances (88 of them starts) he has compiled a 3.46 ERA (125 ERA+) and a 3.93 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In 2017-18, his 3.18 ERA (137 ERA+) and a 4.64 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 63 starts earned him Cy Young Award consideration in both of those seasons.

The Yankees are currently without Jonathan Loáisiga and Zack Britton, who is expected to miss the next year-plus himself after undergoing his own elbow surgery. New York holds a 83-67 record on the season as of Monday, putting them 1 1/2 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League’s second wild card spot. They are also 2 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox, the AL’s top wild card holder.

Indianapolis Colts’ QB Carson Wentz sprains both ankles; uncertain for Sunday’s game vs. Titans

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz suffered sprains to both ankles during Sunday’s loss to the Rams. Wentz exited the game after his right ankle got rolled up on when defensive tackle Aaron Donald hit him in the fourth quarter; the QB is undergoing further testing to determine the severity of both injuries.

After Sunday’s game, Wentz said that he didn’t think his ankle was broken, adding that he’d look to do everything possible to be available for next week’s game against the Titans. He missed a few weeks of training camp when he had surgery on his left foot, and also missed a few days of practice while on the COVID-19 list for being a close contact of someone who had tested positive.

Through two games this season, Wentz has completed 65.2 percent of his passes for 498 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
