Colorado mail carrier shot and killed in third deadly incident involving U.S. postal workers in recent weeks

A Colorado mail carrier was shot and killed Wednesday, the third deadly incident amid of rash of deadly shootings involving U.S. Postal Service workers in recent days. The Longmont Police Department responded to a shooting just after 12:30 p.m. at Heatherhill Street and Renaissance Driv. Wednesday’s deadly incident comes amid a rash of shootings involving postal workers. Two Memphis, Tenn., post office employees were shot and killed Tuesday by a co-worker who died from a self-inflicted gunshot, authorities said; and last week, a Pittsburgh-area postal worker was fatally shot.

Longmont Dep. Chief Jeff Satur told reporters that the letter carrier in Colorado was on his route when someone wearing all black fired multiple shots; when officers arrived, they found the USPS employee shot in front of neighborhood mailboxes. The employee died at the scene, and authorities did not say if the unidentified worker was targeted.

A male suspect wearing all black clothing and a blue mask was seen fleeing the scene on foot, Police Chief Satur said. He said investigators are following up on leads in the case, but declined to say what kind of weapon was used.

The Department of Justice launches probe into Texas youth correctional facilities

The Department of Justice announced on Wednesday that it was launching a civil rights investigation into Texas’ juvenile justice facilities, over allegations of physical and sexual abuse against children there. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said the Justice Department, in conjunction with local U.S. attorneys’ offices across Texas, was launching a pattern-or-practice probe into potential civil rights abuses at these correctional facilities. The investigation will span five secure correctional facilities operated by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.

Clarke said at a virtual news conference announcing the investigation: “State officials have a constitutional obligation to ensure reasonable safety for children in these institutions, and the Department of Justice is committed to protecting the rights of children who end up in such facilities. No child who is sent to a Texas facility for treatment and rehabilitation should be subjected to violence and abuse nor denied basic services.”  Clarke said that investigators will look into the reported use of pepper spray and restraints against children, as well as allegations of improper or excessive physical force, the use of isolation in these facilities and the level of mental health services available to children there. Clark also said that in recent years at least 11 staff members had been arrested over allegations of sexually abusing children at these facilities.

The investigation comes as the Biden administration and government of Texas have feuded on an array of issues, most notably over abortion access, the influx of migrants attempting to cross the southern border and Covid-19 vaccination requirements. Clarke said that Texas officials had been formally notified of the probe, and that federal investigators intended to meet with their state counterparts as part of their examination of the treatment of youths in these facilities. Camille Cain, the executive director of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department, announced the agency would “cooperate fully“ with the Justice Department investigation, and said in a statement: “We all share the same goals for the youth in our care: providing for their safety, their effective rehabilitation, and the best chance for them to lead productive, fulfilling lives.”

The Nashville Predators and veteran defenseman Mattias Ekholm have agreed to a four-year contract extension worth a total of $25 million. The deal carries an average annual value of $6.25 million. General Manager David Poile announced the deal Wednesday, saying the multiyear contract will keep Ekholm with the Predators through the 2026 season.

Ekholm said: “Staying with this organization and in this city was a priority for me and my family, and I’m so excited to be able to sign this contract. Nashville is home for us – it’s where we want to be. I believe in the future of this team and I’m looking forward to the chance at competing for the Stanley Cup here in the next five seasons.”

Ekholm is on the final year of a six-year, $22.5-million deal entering the 2021-22 season; he’s played his entire 11-year career in Nashville and produced 23 points in 48 games for the Predators last season. The 31-year-old Ekholm has made an appearance in 71 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, which ties for the third-most among all skaters in franchise history.

Mississippi auditor says Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre owes almost $1M in federal welfare funds

According to a statement from Mississippi State auditor Shad White, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre must return $828,000 he received from federal welfare funds that should have gone to needy families. White said his office previously determined that John Davis, the former executive director of the Mississippi Department of Human Services, authorized payments of more than $77 million in federal Temporary Assistance to Needy Families funds to two nonprofits that either misspent or improperly disbursed portions of that money. Favre apparently accepted $1.1 million in funds and accepted the money for speaking engagements he never attended for ‘Families First for Mississippi,’ one of the non-profits involved in the alleged scheme.

The first state audit revealed in May 2020 that Favre received $1.1 million for speaking engagements in which he did not appear. White said then that Favre repaid $500,000 of that money with “a commitment to repay the remainder in installments over the next few months.” However, Favre and an employee of his business, Favre Enterprises, needed to repay the $600,000 still owed on the balance plus $228,000 in interest. Favre does not currently face criminal charges, but White said Favre and others who received the misspent funds — a list that includes former WWE wrestler Ted DiBiase Sr. and his son, Ted DiBiase Jr., and former NFL player Marcus Dupree — will face civil charges if they do not repay the money within 30 days.

Eddie Van Halen memorial plaque unveiled in his hometown of Pasadena, California

The mayor and members of the city council of Eddie Van Halen’s hometown of Pasadena, Ca unveiled a memorial plaque to the late legendary guitarist.

According to Pasadena Now, Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo and council members Tyron Hampton, Andy Wilson, Gene Masuda and Felicia Williams unveiled the plaque on a wall outside of the Pasadena Civic Auditorium during a private ceremony. COVID restrictions prevented public attendance. The Pasadena Civic Auditorium is a fitting placement for the plaque, as Van Halen played 14 concerts at the Civic Auditorium between 1975 to 1978, which launched Van Halen to stardom, after his family had emigrated from the Netherlands to Pasadena.

Said council member Williams: “This event brings together history and community to celebrate a world-renowned artist. It’s not just the history of Eddie as a guitar legend, but also the challenges he faced growing up mixed race in Pasadena, which always spoke to me. And the community support and initiative to make this happen is inspiring. Thank you to everyone!”   A close-up of the memorial plaque below can be viewed in the Instagram post – here.

Adele reveals release date for her album ’30’ coming this November

Adele has announced that her long-awaited, fourth studio album — titled ’30’ — will be released on November 19th. Adele’s previous albums were titled 19, 21 and 25 after significant years of her life. Her most recent album, 25, was released in November 2015.

The 33-year-old singer shared the news and new details about the album in an Instagram post on Wednesday, calling the project her “ride or die.”  She wrote:  “I was certainly nowhere near where I’d hoped to be when I first started it nearly 3 years ago. Quite the opposite actually. I rely on routine and consistency to feel safe, I always have. And yet there I was knowingly — willingly even, throwing myself into a maze of absolute mess and inner turmoil!  I’ve learned a lot of blistering home truths about myself along the way. I’ve shed many layers but also wrapped myself in new ones. Discovered genuinely useful and wholesome mentalities to lead with, and I feel like I’ve finally found my feeling again. I’d go as far as to say that I’ve never felt more peaceful in my life.”

Adele also revealed she will release the first single from ’30’, titled “Easy on Me,” on Oct. 15.
