Judge rules that New York must allow for religious exemptions to the state’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for medical workers

On Tuesday, a federal judge ruled that New York state cannot impose a COVID-19 vaccine mandate on healthcare workers without allowing their employers to consider religious exemption requests. U.S. District Judge David Hurd in Albany, New York, ruled that the state’s workplace vaccination requirement conflicted with healthcare workers’ federally protected right to seek religious accommodations from their employers. Seventeen healthcare workers opposed to the mandate sued, saying the requirement violated their rights under the U.S. Constitution and a federal civil rights law requiring employers to reasonably accommodate employees’ religious beliefs. Hurd agreed, saying the state’s order “clearly” conflicted with their right to seek religious accommodations. Hurd issued a temporary restraining order on Sept. 14 in favor of the workers while he considered whether to issue a preliminary injunction.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul vowed in a statement to fight the decision, saying her “responsibility as governor is to protect the people of this state, and requiring health care workers to get vaccinated accomplishes that.” New York’s Department of Health on Aug. 26 ordered healthcare professionals to be vaccinated by Sept. 27 and the order did not allow for the customary religious exemptions.

At least 24 states have imposed vaccine requirements on workers, usually in healthcare. Vaccines have become highly politicized in the United States, where only 66% of Americans are vaccinated. Vaccine mandate opponents across the country are preparing to fight plans by President Joe Biden’s administration to extend COVID-19 inoculation requirements to tens of millions of unvaccinated Americans.

Medical examiner announces that Wyoming coroner found Gabby Petito died from strangulation

A medical examiner announced in a press conference Tuesday that Gabby Petito, the 22-year-old woman who vanished on a road trip with her boyfriend and later turned up dead in Wyoming, was killed by strangulation. The full autopsy results come more than three weeks after her body was found in Grand Teton National Park, whose mysterious disappearance during a road trip with her fiancé sparked interest nationwide. Teton County Coroner Brent Blue announced on Sept. 21 that Petito died by homicide, but further findings about her cause of death were not disclosed until Tuesday.

Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, embarked on a cross-country journey in July, traveling from Florida to New York in their white Ford van, then heading west. Petito documented their adventures on her YouTube channel and planned to start a blog. However in late August, Petito’s mother, Nicole Schmidt, stopped hearing from her while she was staying in Grand Teton National Park. More than two weeks after their last conversation, Schmidt learned that Laundrie had quietly returned to his parents’ Florida home without her daughter. Petito wasn’t reported missing until Sept. 11, 10 days after Laundrie allegedly arrived back in Florida. On Sept. 15, he was named a person of interest in his fiancée’s disappearance.

For the first several days of Petito’s missing person case, investigators tried unsuccessfully to speak with Laundrie and his parents; the family’s attorney instructed his clients not to speak. On Sept. 17, the Laundrie family spoke with the FBI for the first time, and investigators were informed that Laundrie himself had gone missing, launching a second missing persons case. As of press time, Laundrie has still not been located despite searches in a Florida wildlife preserve, where he is believed to have gone hiking on the day that he vanished. Authorities have yet to name a suspect in Petito’s disappearance and homicide.

Boston Celtics announce center Al Horford has tested positive for COVID-19

The Boston Celtics announced that their center Al Horford has tested positive for COVID-19. Horford is currently in quarantine, and didn’t travel with the team for its two-game exhibition road trip to Florida, which includes games in Orlando on Wednesday and Miami on Friday.

Horford is the second Celtics player to test positive this month along with Jaylen Brown, who went into quarantine on Oct. 8. First-year coach Ime Udoka also tested positive for the virus prior to the start of training camp.

Horford is in his second stint with the Celtics after being acquired in a trade with the Thunder in June. Horford played three seasons for the Celtics between 2016 and 2019, including an All-Star 2017-18 campaign. He then signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, who traded him to the Oklahoma City last year. Boston reacquired him from the Thunder this summer along with Moses Brown in exchange for Kemba Walker and two draft picks.

ALDS Game 4: Houston Astros win series by defeating Chicago White Sox; will face Red Sox in ALCS

The Houston Astros will advance to their fifth consecutive American League Championship Series, after defeating the Chicago White Sox 10-1 in Game 4 on Tuesday of their best-of-five division series matchup. Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. gave up just one solo home run to designated hitter Gavin Sheets in the second inning. McCullers pitched only four innings, allowing five hits and three walks; the Astros bullpen was perfect over the final five innings.

The Astros are the third team ever to appear in five straight league championship series, and first to do so since the Atlanta Braves reached eight straight from 1991-1999. It’ll be Houston’s second ALCS under 72-year-old manager Dusty Baker. Baker replaced A.J. Hinch, who was fired in fallout from the Astros’ 2017 sign-stealing scandal.

Game 1 of the ALCS against the Boston Red Sox will be held on Friday in Houston. The Red Sox eliminated Tampa Bay with a 6-5 victory in Game 4 on Monday night.

Former “Real Housewives of Orange County” star Meghan King marries Cuffe Biden Owens in small wedding ceremony

Former ‘Real Housewives of Orange County’ star Meghan King Edmonds married Cuffe Biden Owens during an intimate ceremony in Pennsylvania. Cuffe, a Los Angeles-based attorney, is President Joe Biden’s nephew — Cuffe’s mother is Valerie Biden Owens, a political strategist who worked as a senior advisor on POTUS’ 2020 presidential campaign. President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were in attendance at the wedding ceremony, which took place at the home of Valerie and Jack Owens. King shared the news of the marriage on social media, alongside a photo with the caption: “We just knew. Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Owens.”

Meghan had just announced her relationship with Owens on Instagram only two weeks ago, introducing followers to Cuffe with the message: “Trying my best to avoid any cheesy introductions like ‘my main squeeze’… so just meet my man,” she captioned a photo of the pair.   She also told ‘Brides’ magazine in an interview: “We connected on a dating app, texted for a day or two, then spent five straight hours on the phone the first time we spoke. By the time that call ended, Cuffe was booked and packed for a flight to St. Louis that took off in about eight hours. Within a week, we were back on the East Coast, meeting his family, and starting to plan our future together. We didn’t leave each other’s side for weeks. Our wedding was about two things for us. Our love for and commitment to each other, and our family—each of our families, and the new very large and very tight family that we were bonding together by getting married. That’s it.”

Meghan shares three children with her ex-husband, former MLB pro Jim Edmonds: 4-year-old daughter Aspen and 3-year-old twins Hayes and Hart, who were all a part of Meghan’s wedding day. The former couple split two years ago in Oct. 2019 after five years of marriage, and their divorce was finalized this past May.

Mark Harmon is leaving CBS’s ‘NCIS’ after 18 seasons

Longtime ‘NCIS’ star Mark Harmon is leaving the series after 18 seasons. The 70-year-old Harmon appeared as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs in his final episode of the police procedural series on Monday, which showed Gibbs deciding to remain in Alaska indefinitely after solving a case. Gibbs told his partner, Special Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray): “I’m not going back, Tim. I’m not going back home.”

Harmon will continue to serve as an executive producer on NCIS; showrunner Steven D. Binder said in a statement: “As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the fabric of the show. Our north star has always been staying true to our characters, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go. So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years… never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”

NCIS is in its 19th season on CBS. The series co-stars Murray, Wilmer Valderrama, Katrina Law, Brian Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, David McCallum and Rocky Carroll.
