18 former NBA players are arrested for alleged health care fraud scheme

18 former NBA players were charged in New York federal court for a health insurance fraud scheme involving the league’s health and welfare benefit plan. According to the grand jury indictment, the defendants engaged in a scheme lasting from at least 2017 up to around ’20, which sought to defraud the NBA’s benefit plan by submitting fake reimbursement claims for medical and dental services that were never actually rendered. Those fraudulent claims totaled about $3.9 million. Of that, the defendants received about $2.5 million in fraudulent proceeds.

Terrence Williams allegedly orchestrated the scheme, and recruited others to participate by offering them fake invoices to support their false health plan claims. Other former players reportedly included in the scheme were Sebastian Telfair, Darius Miles, Glen Davis, Shannon Brown, Will Bynum, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Jamario Moon and Tony Allen and more. Allen’s wife, Desiree Allen, is the only woman and non-player charged in the indictment. Current Trail Blazers assistant coach Milt Palacio was put on administrative leave by the team after being one of the 18 players arrested. In the indictment, Williams is accused of receiving kickback payments totaling at least $23,000 in return for providing the false documentation. He also allegedly impersonated an individual who processed plan claims at one point.

The NBA said in a statement: “The benefit plans provided by the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association to our players are critically important to support their health and well-being throughout their playing careers and over the course of their lives which makes these allegations particularly disheartening. We will cooperate fully with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in this matter.”

Chase Rice to release his new single “If I Were Rock & Roll” off his upcoming album

Chase Rice is releasing his latest single today, Friday (October 8th) called “If I Were Rock & Roll.”  Chase wrote the song solo during quarantine, and it’s the first new music off his upcoming album called Intertwined, which will be released on November 5th.

Chase said, “The night I wrote this song, I decided to take a break from social media, so instead of aimlessly scrolling like most nights, I put Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You documentary on my living room TV. His song ‘If I Was the Priest’ stood out to me and got me thinking about my own relationship with Jesus and all of the things I love in life; Country music, NASCAR, my friends and family. I picked up a guitar and wrote ‘If I Were Rock & Roll’ alone in that moment. No track and no cowriters meant I had no choice to focus on the lyrics and lean into what is real to me.”

“If I Were Rock & Roll” is the followup to Chase’s latest chart-topping hit, “Drinkin’ Beer. Talkin’ God. Amen.,” featuring Florida Georgia Line.  You can download If I Were Rock & Roll at Apple Music and Spotify here.

Los Angeles City Council passes COVID-19 vaccine mandate for certain indoor spaces including bars, gyms and more

The Los Angeles City Council voted on Wednesday to require people to show proof they’re fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter certain indoor establishments. The council voted 11-2 in favor of the mandate, which will require people to be fully vaccinated to enter bars, restaurants, nail salons, gyms, shopping centers and entertainment venues. The mandate applies to people 12 years old and up, and those with medical or religious exemptions for the vaccine will be required to show a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours before entry. In addition, businesses found to be violating the mandate face a $1,000 fine for a second infraction, $2,000 for a third and $5,000 for a fourth.  The city already required proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 for large events such as concerts or sporting events with more than 10,000 people. Certain essential businesses such as grocery stores and pharmacies will not require proof of vaccination.

The vaccine mandate is one of the most sweeping measures taken by a U.S. city to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti must sign the measure within 10 days, at which point it will go into effect 31 days later.  Garcetti’s spokesman, Harrison Wollman, said the mayor plans to sign the mandate into law, according to the Los Angeles Times.  Garcetti said in a statement. “These new rules will encourage more people to get the shot, and make businesses safer for workers and customers — so that we can save more lives, better protect the vulnerable and make our communities even safer as we fight this pandemic.”
