Police arrest 18-year-old suspect after shooting at Arlington, Texas high school leaves four injured

Police arrested a suspect on Wednesday who had been on the run after allegedly opening fire at an Arlington, Texas high school which injured three students and an adult. Police identified the shooter as 18-year-old Timothy George Simpkins, who had fled from the school after the shooting, prompting a manhunt by local, state and federal authorities. Officials arrested Simpkins about 1:20 p.m. after he turned himself in to police. He faces three counts of aggravated assault.

Arlington Police Assistant Chief Kevin Kolbye said that the shooting occurred about 9:15 a.m. at Timberview High School in Arlington, after a fight between the suspect and another student. The school is part of the Mansfield Independent School District. Kolbye said during a news conference: “This is not a random act of violence. This is not somebody attacking our schools. … We believe this was a student who got into a fight.”

Three of the injured were hospitalized and the fourth, an adult, was slightly hurt after a fall; Kolbye confirmed that some of the victims underwent surgery. Kolbye also said investigators weren’t sure how the suspect bypassed the school’s metal detectors with the gun; police recovered a .45-caliber handgun at the scene and were running analysis to determine if it was the firearm used in the shooting.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy commits to Justin Fields as starting quarterback

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy said Wednesday that rookie quarterback Justin Fields will be the team’s starter moving forward. Fields, the No. 11 pick last year’s NFL draft, opened the season as the team’s backup but had started each of Chicago’s past two games with Andy Dalton out with an injury.

Nagy had previously said Dalton would remain as the team’s starter when he recovered from his knee injury, but Wednesday’s announcement is a reversal of that line of thinking. Nagy said that Dalton was expected to be a full participant in practice. Nagy said of Fields on Wednesday: “He’s done everything to show us that he’s ready for this opportunity.”  While Fields struggled in his first career start in Week 3 against the Browns, he performed much better in Week 4, completing 11 of his 17 attempts for 209 yards in a 24—14 win over the Lions.

Fields and the Bears face off against the Raiders this Sunday in Las Vegas. Kickoff is set for 4:05 p.m. ET.

San Diego Padres fire manager Jayce Tingler after two seasons

The San Diego Padres have fired manager Jayce Tingler after two seasons as the team’s manager. The 40-year-old Tingler led San Diego to a 37–23 record in the shortened 2020 season before they lost to the Cardinals in the NLDS. This season, the Padres were 17 games above .500 on Aug. 11, but a huge decline late in the season led to the team finishing third in the NL West with a 79–83 record.

General manager A.J. Preller said in a statement Wednesday: “Jayce accomplished a great deal in his two seasons with the Padres, leading our team through an unprecedented pandemic and into the postseason for the first time in 15 years. I have tremendous respect for him as a coach, colleague and friend. After much thought and consideration over the last several weeks, we felt change was necessary at this time to ultimately reach our championship potential in San Diego.”

San Diego will enter 2022 seeking its first World Series appearance since 1998. The Padres have missed the postseason in 14 of the last 15 seasons.

2021 CMA Awards will return to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Nov. 10; will require attendees to be vaccinated

Following last year’s run at Nashville’s Music City Center, the Country Music Association’s 55th annual CMA Awards will return to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Nov. 10. Eric Church and Chris Stapleton are this year’s most-nominated artists heading into the awards ceremony, with five nominations each.

A host for the 2021 CMA’s has yet to be revealed, however, it has been confirmed that Reba McEntire — who co-hosted last year’s awards show alongside Darius Rucker– will not be hosting this year’s show. A limited number of tickets will go on sale to the general public via Ticketmaster on Monday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. CT. Ticketed audience members will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and to wear appropriate face coverings.

Mandy Barnett invited to become member of the Grand Ole Opry

Country singer Mandy Barnett is the latest artist to be invited to join the Grand Ole Opry. Barnett was surprised on her birthday (Sept. 28) with an invitation to join when Opry member Connie Smith shared the news with the singer while reading from Barnett’s birthday card.  Said Smith: “You’ve felt like family since we first met, and on this, your special day, we’re honored to invite you to become an official member of the Grand Ole Opry!”  

Barnett , who’s performed on the Opry stage over 500 times, said: “This is the happiest day of my life! I came here back in the 80’s and met so many of the greats that came before me like Roy Acuff, Minnie Pearl, Jean Shepard, Billy Walker — and you Connie. I made my Opry debut in 1994 and I’ve had so many supporters who have rooted for me and been nice to me all these years.”

Barnett will be officially inducted into the Opry later this fall. She’s also set to appear in each of the Opry’s four “Opry Country Christmas” shows debuting this holiday season at the Opry House. Barnett first rose to fame as the star of Always…Patsy Cline, a jukebox musical about Patsy Cline. In 2020, Barnett released A Nashville Songbook, and her latest album is Every Star Above, a celebration of Billie Holiday’s ‘Lady in Satin.’

Take your first look at Andrew Garfield as ‘Rent’ creator Jonathan Larson in the trailer for the film ‘Tick, Tick… BOOM!’

Netflix has released thee first trailer for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s upcoming feature film Tick, Tick…Boom! featuring Andrew Garfield as ‘Rent’ creator Jonathan Larson. The film also stars Vanessa Hudgens, Alexandra Shipp, Robin de Jesús, Joshua Henry, Judith Light and Bradley Whitford.

Tick, Tick… Boom! is based on Larson’s autobiographical musical of the same name. The original Tick, Tick… Boom! musical featured music, lyrics and a book by Larson, who died at age 35 in 1996. An official description reads: “the film follows Jon (Garfield), a young theater composer, as he navigates love, friendship and the pressures of life as an artist in New York City in 1990. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and faces the question everyone must reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have?” 

Tick, Tick… Boom! is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s feature-length directorial debut; it will debut in select theaters on Nov. 12, and begin streaming on Netflix on Nov. 19. You can view the trailer – here.

Netflix & Howard University establish $5.4M Chadwick Boseman scholarship

Netflix and Howard University are honoring Chadwick Boseman’s memory; Boseman passed away in August 2020 after a private four-year battle with colon cancer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming service and Boseman’s alma mater is establishing a $5.4 million scholarship in his name. The Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship will provide four years of tuition at Howard’s College of Fine Arts, which was renamed after the actor back in May. Netflix is the first donor for the scholarship, which will begin this year with one award for each class year. In subsequent years it will be awarded to one incoming freshman per year. The scholarship will consider student’s who embody that late actor’s values described as his drive for excellence, leadership, respect, empathy and passion.

Howard president Wayne A.I. Frederick said in a statement: “This scholarship embodies Chadwick’s love for Howard, his passion for storytelling and his willingness to support future generations of Howard students. I am thankful for the continuous support and partnership of Chadwick’s wife, Mrs. Simone Ledward-Boseman, and to Netflix for this important gift.”

Andrew W.K. postpones tour, and deletes all social media accounts

Andrew W.K. has disappeared from social media; according to MetalSucks, the artist let fans know on his now-deleted Facebook that he was postponing his 2021 tour to 2022, but was still playing Furnace Fest. That post read: “Andrew W.K.’s 2021 tour dates are being rescheduled for 2022, and are posted on Ticketmaster.  All tickets for 2021 will be honored, and refunds will be available at the point of purchase through September 27th.”

However the night before Furnace Fest was set to kick-off on September 25, Andrew W.K. pulled out of the festival. Foo Fighters, Tame Impala, St. Vincent to headline 2022 Innings Festival

Foo Fighters, Tame Impala, and St. Vincent will headline the fourth annual ‘Innings Festival,’ set to take place at Arizona’s Tempe Beach and Tempe Arts Park on February 26th and 27th, 2022. The bill for the two-day event also includes My Morning Jacket, Black Pumas, Billy Strings, Dashboard Confessional, White Reaper, Fitz and the Tantrums, Matt & Kim, Low Cut Connie, Jade Bird, and the Del Water Gap.

Innings Festival is linked to the start of spring training for Major League Baseball, which usually kicks-off in Arizona near the end of February. Aside from live performances, the Innings Festival includes plenty of baseball-related activities including an “All-Star Baseball Jam” led by guitarist and former MLB pitcher, Jake Peavy. Other players set to appear include Roger Clemens, Dave Stewart, Kenny Lofton, Rick Sutcliffe, Tim Raines, Johnny Gomes, and Jim Abbott.

New Kids on the Block to launch ‘Mixtape’ tour in 2022 featuring Salt-N-Pepa, Rick Astley and En Vogue

New Kids on the Block shared news that they are hitting the road in 2022 for the ‘Mixtape’ tour across North American, featuring Salt-N-Pepa, Rick Astley and En Vogue. The group tweeted: “Getting that confetti ready because we’re coming to a stage near you in 2022!!”

New Kids on the Block consists of Donne Wahlberg, brothers Jonathan Knight and Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre and Danny Wood.  Wahlberg said in a statement: “We had a blast out on the first Mixtape tour in 2019, and can’t wait to take it to another level with our fans on the MixTape Tour 2022. Just like a mixtape, these shows are going to take audiences through all the emotions. To be able to have Salt-N-Pepa come back and now also have the iconic and legendary Rick Astley and En Vogue join the tour… we could not be more excited. Let’s GO!

New Kids on the Block will kick off the “Mixtape” tour May 10 in Cincinnati, Ohio, before wrapping up on  July 23 in Washington, D.C.  Tickets for the tour go on sale via Ticketmaster on Friday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. Official fan club presale tickets go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m.
