Pfizer asks FDA to authorize booster shots for all adults

On Tuesday, Pfizer announced it has asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) to authorize booster doses of its COVID-19 vaccine for all adults, ages 18 and older. The request comes a month and a half after the FDA authorized boosters for seniors and other higher-risk adults.

The request is similar to one made by Pfizer in August, when it asked federal regulators to amend its full license to allow a booster dose for individuals 16 and older. However many raised concerns that there was insufficient evidence to suggest that vaccine-induced immunity was waning in younger populations, particularly against severe disease. However, the company now says that new data from a large clinical trial of more than 10,000 fully vaccinated people found that a booster dose was over 95% effective against COVID-19 compared to individuals who were fully vaccinated but had not received a booster dose. A press release issued by Pfizer said that during the study period, “there were 5 cases of COVID-19 in the booster group, and 109 cases in the non-boosted group.” The company also says the efficacy of the booster dose was consistent across different ages and racial and ethnic groups.

Up until recently there was not enough known about the risk of a rare potential side effect, myocarditis or pericarditis — inflammation of different parts of the heart — after a third dose, particularly among young men. Safety data has shown that men under the age of 30 are at higher risk of the condition, specifically after the second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. The FDA has also allowed people to mix-and-match any of the three authorized or approved vaccines in the U.S. as a booster shot..

So far, nearly 25 million booster doses have been administered nationwide, representing more than 12% of individuals who are fully vaccinated. Nearly a third of individuals who are 65 or older and are fully vaccinated have received a booster.

Oklahoma Supreme Court overturns ruling against Johnson & Johnson regarding opioid crisis

On Tuesday, the Oklahoma Supreme Court overturned a ruling which ordered drugmaker Johnson & Johnson to pay $465 million for its role in the state’s opioid crisis. The court ruled 5-1 that District Judge Thad Balkman ruled improperly when he rendered the judgment against J&J in August 2019.

Judge Balkman said at the time that J&J and its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, created a public nuisance by compromising the health and safety of thousands of Oklahomans by marketing opioids. However, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that the company’s actions didn’t violate the public nuisance law, stating: “The court has allowed public nuisance claims to address discrete, localized problems, not policy problems. J&J had no control of its products through the multiple levels of distribution, including after it sold the opioids to distributors and wholesalers, which were then disbursed to pharmacies, hospitals and physicians’ offices, and then prescribed by doctors to patients.”

Johnson & Johnson has faced thousands of lawsuits for its role in the opioid crisis, which the U.S. government blames for nearly 70,000 deaths in 2020. The company agreed to pay up to $5 billion over the next nine years as part of a wide-ranging settlement with 14 states involving up to 4,000 opioid-related claims.

Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers takes ‘full responsibility’ for people feeling ‘misled’ by his comments on Covid vaccination

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers acknowledged on Tuesday that he “misled some people” about his vaccination status. In an interview last week, the 37-year-old Rodgers — who was diagnosed with Covid-19 — confirmed that he is unvaccinated, claimed that he is allergic to vaccines, and said that he has taken ivermectin. Rodgers also said he is the victim of a “woke mob” and acknowledged that he has been seeking Covid-19 advice from podcaster Joe Rogan.

However Rodgers has clarified his comments, saying on Tuesday: “I made some comments that people might have felt were misleading, and to anybody who felt misled by those comments, I take full responsibility for those comments.”  Rodgers acknowledged having made misleading statements, adding: “I shared an opinion that is polarizing. I get it. And I misled some people about my status, which I take full responsibility of, those comments.”  However, the reigning NFL MVP also didn’t back down, saying: “But in the end, I have to stay true to who I am and what I’m about, and I stand behind the things that I said. And I have a ton of empathy for people who have been going through the worst part of this pandemic.”

When Rodgers was asked before the start of the season whether he was vaccinated, he responded affirmatively, saying he had been “immunized.”  But it was revealed last week that Rodgers hadn’t been vaccinated and that he had failed to meet NFL protocols for unvaccinated players. The NFL is now investigating whether Rodgers or the Packers violated Covid-19 protocols.

Odell Beckham Jr. clears waivers, becomes free agent for the first time in his career

Odell Beckham Jr. is a free agent for the first time in his career. The veteran wide received was waived by the Browns on Monday, and went unclaimed on waivers Tuesday. Any team that claimed him would have owed Beckham $7.25 million for the rest of the season, and he can agree to a deal immediately.

Terms of the settlement the Browns and Beckham signed Saturday made it unlikely he would be claimed. The claiming team would have owed Beckham $7.25 million this season and with the final two non-guaranteed years wiped off his contract, he would become a free agent in March. Passing through waivers means the Browns will pay Beckham $4.25 million.

The Seattle Seahawks have shown strong interest in Beckham, and coach Pete Carroll did not refute that Monday. Asked if Seattle would claim Beckham, Carroll said, “So, I didn’t say yes or I didn’t say no. That’s just cause … you’ll see.” Aside from the Green Bay Packers, other possible destinations for Beckham are the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints.

In 29 games (28 starts) over three seasons with the Browns, Beckham totaled 114 catches on 210 targets for 1,586 yards and seven touchdowns. He also recorded eight carries for 96 yards and a touchdown.

Thomas Rhett releases his latest single ‘Slow Down Summer’

Thomas Rhett has shared a lyric video for his new single “Slow Down Summer,” the first track off Rhett’s forthcoming sixth studio album titled “Where We Started,” which will be released early next year.

Rhett says of the new song, “I wrote this song from the point of view of two people who are in love during senior year of high school. I envisioned them headed off to different schools and they’re starting to understand that the moment the weather starts to change, they’ve got a 99-percent chance this relationship is not going to work.  I know that myself and a lot of people have been there before, wishing the fireworks stage doesn’t have to end.”

‘Squid Game’ creator, writer/director confirms the Netflix series will return for Season 2

Netflix‘s smash hit series ‘Squid Game’ is set to return for a second season. The film’s creator, writer, and director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed the latest development in a recent interview with the Associated Press.

A translation of what he said: “So there’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this…(in English) Gi-Hun will come back, and he will do something for the world.” Dong-hyuk has previously stated that he was unsure if Squid Game would come back for Season 2, saying:  “I don’t have well developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2.’ It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”

Squid Game follows Seong Gi-Hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, as he and hundreds of other desperate and deeply indebted contestants compete in a violent and often grotesque competition for about $38 million. Only one person can win the prize, and those who lose the series of children’s games pay with their lives.  Released on Sept. 17, Squid Game became Netflix’s biggest-ever series launch.
