Kevin Spacey to pay $31M for breaching ‘House of Cards’ contract

Kevin Spacey has been ordered to pay nearly $31 million to TV studio Media Rights Capital (“MRC”) for breaching his contract with the TV series ‘House of Cards’, due to behavior leading up to his 2017 termination from the Netflix show amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

MRC filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court revealing the actor was ordered to pay the eight-figure sum after a “confidential,” closed-door arbitration proceeding that ended with the judgment that Spacey failed to overturn on appeal. The new filing is asking the court to confirm the award.  MRC says the secret proceeding included more than 20 depositions and an eight-day evidentiary hearing in front of a neutral arbitrator. The arbitrator found that Spacey “repeatedly breached” his contractual obligations in each of the five House of Cards seasons that he starred in and executive-produced, according to the paperwork. The arbitrator found MRC “had no choice” but to halt production of the show’s sixth season, remove Spacey’s character from the script and shorten the season from 13 to eight episodes “upon the revelations of Spacey’s pattern of harassment.”

The 62-year-old Spacey was filming the sixth and final season of the show in Oct. 2017, when accusations arose that Spacey attempted to have sex with actor Anthony Rapp at a party at his house in 1986 when Rapp was only 14 years old. Days later, allegations from eight anonymous House of Cards crew members were released, accusing Spacey of “predatory” behavior. Spacey said he didn’t recall the alleged incident with Rapp, but if it did occur, it was “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.” He later said he was seeking treatment and has largely withdrawn from public life.

Federal jury finds white supremacists conspired in deadly Unite the Right rally

A federal jury on Tuesday found that white supremacists conspired to take part in violence during a 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia which left three people dead. The jury in the civil trial ruled in favor of the plaintiffs on four of the six counts they faced, but deadlocked on two federal conspiracy counts.  The defendants — 12 individuals and five white nationalist organizations — were ordered to pay $26 million in damages for the violent protest. Half of that amount must be paid by James Fields, who’s serving life in prison for driving his vehicle into a crowd of counterprotestors, killing activist Heather Heyer.

The Unite the Right rally, which was held Aug. 11, 2017 on the campus of the University of Virginia, protested the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a park.  There were protests at the park the next day, leading to violence between the white supremacists and counter-demonstrators, during which Heyer was killed.

In addition to Fields, the defendants in the civil trial include prominent white nationalists and self-proclaimed members of the “alt-right,” such as Richard Spencer, Christopher Cantwell, Jason Kessler, Elliot Kline, Nathan Damico, Matthew Heimbach, Jeff Schoep, Andrew Anglin, Matthew Parrott and others.

President Biden orders 50M barrels from emergency oil stockpile to bring gas prices down

President Joe Biden has ordered the release of tens of millions of barrels of oil from the strategic reserve in a move to bring down gas prices.  During remarks from the White House on Tuesday, Biden ordered an additional 50 million barrels from the reserve, which is an emergency stockpile of oil stored in underground tanks in the Gulf Coast area, a move he said “will not solve the problem of high gas prices overnight.  It will take time, but before long, you should see the price of gas drop where you fill up your tank. And in the longer term, we will reduce our reliance on oil as we shift to clean energy.”  Inflation has pushed up the cost of many goods and services in the United States, particularly gasoline prices, which are presently at their highest prices in years.

The White House said in a statement: “American consumers are feeling the impact of elevated gas prices at the pump and in their home heating bills … because oil supply has not kept up with demand as the global economy emerges from the pandemic. That’s why President Biden is using every tool available to him to work to lower prices and address the lack of supply.”

Officials said the additional barrels of oil will be released from the strategic reserve in two ways — 32 million barrels in an exchange over the next few months that will eventually return to the emergency stockpile, and 18 million barrels in an acceleration of sales that Congress previously authorized. Biden described high gas prices as a problem in the United States and throughout the world: “We’re taking action. The big part of the reason Americans are facing high gas prices is because oil producing countries and large companies have not ramped up the supply of oil quickly enough to meet the demand. And the smaller supply means higher prices globally, globally, for oil.”

NY Giants fire offensive coordinator Jason Garrett after loss to Buccaneers

The New York Giants announced on Twitter they have fired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett midway through his second season with the franchise. Garrett’s dismissal on Tuesday comes just one day after New York’s offense was stymied by Tampa Bay in a 30–10 loss.

Coach Joe Judge confirmed the dismissal of Garrett on Tuesday, saying: “This is not a blame game. That’s not what this is at all. I am not looking for a head to roll or worried about external opinions or perceptions. This is not a blame game. I am very appreciative of Jason for a lot of things he has done for us.”  Judge said the coaching staff would combine to make an offensive game plan for the Sunday’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium. Judge was hired by the Giants in early January 2020, and one of his first moves was to hire Garrett, who had been let go by the Cowboys after 10 seasons as their head coach.

The Giants finished No. 31 in points scored last season, and they enter Week 12 at No. 24 in scoring in the 2021 season. New York scored 30 points just once in Garrett’s tenure, a 37–34 loss to the Cowboys.

2022 Grammy Nominations: Chris Stapleton, Mickey Guyton, Jimmie Allen and more lead the country music nominees

Nominations for the 2022 Grammy Awards were revealed on Tuesday by the Recording Academy via a Livestream from Los Angeles. Jimmie Allen, Chris Stapleton and Mickey Guyton are among country music’s top nominees. Allen, who is up for Best New Artist, is country music’s only nominee in the all-genre category.

Guyton earned 3 nominations, including for Best Country Album. She is also the first African-American artist nominated in that category since its inception. Stapleton also earned 3 nominations, in the Best Country Album, Song and Solo Performance categories.

Kacey Musgraves made headlines recently when members of the Recording Academy banned her 2021 album “Star-Crossed” from the Best Country Album category (because it was not ‘country enough’), but the project’s “Camera Roll” received nominations for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song.

You can see the full list of nominees here. The 64th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be held on January 31, 2022, live on CBS.
