Travis McMichael takes stand, testifies Ahmaud Arbery never verbally threatened him or pulled weapon

Travis McMichael returned to the witness stand on Thursday, and under cross-examination from the prosecutor repeated that Ahmaud Arbery never verbally threatened him or pulled a weapon on him during the five minutes he, his father and their neighbor chased Arbery before the 35-year-old McMichael fatally shot him.  Travis McMichael, his 65-year-old father, Gregory McMichael, and their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, 53, have pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, aggravated assault and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment.

Prosecutor Linda Dunikoski attempted to get McMichael to concede to inconsistencies between what he told police the day of the shooting and what he told the Brunswick, Georgia, jury during his direct testimony on Wednesday. McMichael acknowledged that in none of his statements did he tell police that he and his father were attempting to make a citizens’ arrest of Arbery. He also conceded that he had suspected another individual of stealing a pistol from his truck on Jan. 1, 2020, and that he had also surmised that person, not Arbery, was the one responsible for a spike in crime in his Satilla Shores neighborhood near Brunswick.

During his direct testimony on Wednesday, Travis McMichael testified that he walked out of his house with his shotgun and saw a neighbor pointing in his direction as if signaling where he saw the young Black man running. He testified on Thursday that at no time did he go and speak to the neighbor about what had occurred before he and his father jumped in his truck with their guns and set out after Arbery.  He said he drove close enough to Arbery on three separate occasions to ask him to stop running so he could speak to him, but in each instance, Arbery kept running, never said a word to him and altered his course in an apparent attempt to get away from the McMichaels.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred hints that player lockout could advance MLB collective bargaining agreement talks

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred hinted at the potential benefit of a lockout should league owners and the MLB Players Association fail to agree to a new collective bargaining agreement by Dec. 2.  On Thursday, Manfred said that “an offseason lockout that moves the process forward is different than a labor dispute that costs games. I don’t think ’94 worked out too great for anybody. I think we need to look at other sports. The pattern has become to control the timing of the labor dispute and try to minimize the prospect of actual disruption of the season. That’s what it’s about. It’s avoiding doing damage to the season.”

Negotiations between owners and the players’ union have been contentious for some time, but a work stoppage “appears almost certain to start” when the current CBA expires before midnight Dec. 2.

Manfred said Thursday the owners haven’t chosen a course of action just yet: “We will not—did not make today, and will not make a decision as to what’s next. We’re focused on making an agreement prior to Dec. 1.”

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson misses second straight practice due to non-COVID related illness

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson missed practice for the second straight day on Thursday due to a non-COVID related illness. Jackson was sent home Wednesday along with starting center Bradley Bozeman, who is also sick.

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman said Thursday that Jackson is feeling better but did not have a complete update on the QB’s status for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

Jackson has missed just two games since becoming Baltimore’s starter in 2018, including one absence caused by COVID-19 last season. He’s tallied 2,447 passing yards in 2021, adding 639 on the ground. Jackson struggled in Baltimore’s Week 10 loss to the Miami Dolphins but is 7-2 as a starter following a loss in his career. The Ravens have only lost consecutive games twice with Jackson at the help, winning their last 11 games in 2019 and last five games in 2020.

Baltimore enters Week 11 leading the AFC North at 6–3 after last week’s loss to the Dolphins. Kickoff in Chicago on Sunday is slated for 1 p.m. ET.

Netflix shared a teaser and first-look photos for Season 4 of Ozark. The teaser features moments from the show in reverse, as Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) reflects on the “snowball effect” of ones actions.  He says in the trailer: “Human beings make decisions, they commit acts and that makes things happen. It creates a snowball effect — cause other people to make decisions. The cycle continues and the snowball keeps rolling.”

The first-look photos ask viewers to “look closely” at the images, which include a shot of Marty (Bateman) kneeling before a person with a gun. Ozark also stars Laura Linney, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner and Julia Garner. The series follows Marty and his family as they relocate to the Lake of the Ozarks region of Missouri after a money laundering scheme gone wrong.
