Dr. Oz launches campaign for GOP Senate run in Pennsylvania

On Tuesday, TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz launched his campaign to become the next U.S. senator from Pennsylvania.   Dr. Oz made the announcement in a Washington Examiner op-ed, which sharply criticized how the government has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, asserting that “many” COVID deaths “were preventable.”  Oz wrote:  “During the pandemic, I learned that when you mix politics and medicine, you get politics instead of solutions. That’s why I am running for the U.S. Senate: to help fix the problems and to help us heal.”

Oz’s television show is produced in New York City, but has been a longtime New Jersey resident. He recently registered to vote at his in-laws’ home in suburban Philadelphia. He also attended the University of Pennsylvania for medical school.

In a video released by his campaign, Oz said “Pennsylvania needs a conservative who will put America first.” He also criticized the federal government’s pandemic response, saying, “Washington got it wrong. They took away our freedom without making us safer.”  Oz joins several other candidates who are vying for the seat being vacated by retiring GOP Senator Pat Toomey. Trump-endorsed candidate Sean Parnell dropped out of the race last week, after losing a custody battle amid abuse allegations by his estranged wife..

Businessman Jeff Bartos, former U.S. ambassador to Denmark Carla Sands and conservative commentator Kathy Barnette are among those who are also seeking the GOP nomination. Bridgewater Associates CEO David McCormick, who is married to former President Trump’s deputy national security adviser Dina Powell, is considering a bid for the GOP nomination as well. On the Democratic side, U.S. Representative Conor Lamb, Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman, state Senator Malcolm Kenyatta and Montgomery County Supervisor Val Arkoosh are all vying for the nomination.

Javier Báez and the Detroit Tigers agree to 6-Year, $140M contract

Two-time All-Star Javier Báez has agreed to a six-year, $140 million deal with the Detroit Tigers, according to multiple reports. The shortstop has the ability to opt out after two years and also got a limited no-trade clause.

He moved to second base for the Mets after playing shortstop for the Cubs. Báez was an NL all-star with the Cubs in 2018 and 2019 and helped Chicago win the World Series in 2016.

The Detroit Tigers also made big moves in mid-November, signing former Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez to a $77M, five-year deal.

Midnight Oil confirm farewell tour in support of their new album “Resist”

Midnight Oil have announced they will hit the road in support of their new album, Resist, in what will be their farewell tour. Resist, the band’s 15th LP, deals with ecological issues and will be released early next year, with tour dates across Australia and New Zealand set to take place between Jan. 23 and May 13. A music video for the LP’s lead song, “Rising Seas,” can be seen – here

Vocalist Peter Garrett said in a statement:  “We all know time refuses to stand still for anyone. [B]ut after many years together the band’s spirit is deep, the music and words are strong, and our ideas and actions as bold as we can make them. We’ve reached people in ways we never could have imagined. Our desire to create and speak out is undimmed. We hope everyone who hears this album and gets to one of the shows will come away charged up about the planet’s future, saying, ‘Why stop now?’ Having always tackled every tour like it’s the last, this time it actually will be.”

Midnight Oil formed in 1972 and initially split in 2002, briefly reuniting in 2005 and 2009 before returning in 2016. Garrett was a senior minister in the Australian government between 2007 and 2013 after first being elected to the House of Representatives in 2004.

The band said it’s possible they could continue working as a group. “Each of the members will continue their own projects over the years ahead,” they reported. “They remain very open to recording new music together in future and supporting causes in which they believe.”
