Jean-Marc Vallée, acclaimed director of ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ and ‘Big Little Lies,’ dies at age 58

Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée, who directed Dallas Buyers Club and Wild, as well as the HBO series Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects, has died at the age of 58.  Vallée died suddenly over the weekend in his cabin near Quebec City, from what appears to have been a heart attack.  In a statement announcing his passing, Vallée’s longtime producer partner Nathan Ross wrote: “Jean-Marc stood for creativity, authenticity and trying things differently. He was a true artist and a generous, loving guy. Everyone who worked with him couldn’t help but see the talent and vision he possessed. He was a friend, creative partner and an older brother to me. The maestro will sorely be missed but it comforts knowing his beautiful style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on.”

Vallée directed Dallas Buyers Club, which earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing (which Vallée received under his alias John Mac McMurphy).  Matthew McConaughey won the Oscar for Best Actor, and Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor for their roles in the film.

Vallée next directed Wild, an adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, who were both later recognized with Oscar nominations.  Vallée reunited with Witherspoon in 2017 for the HBO series Big Little Lies, a murder mystery based on Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name. Vallée served as director and executive producer of the series.

Vallée is survived by his sons, Alex and Émile, and siblings Marie-Josée Vallée, Stéphane Tousignant and Gérald Vallée.

Dior postpones Travis Scott collaboration ‘indefinitely’

Travis Scott has been dropped by the perfume company Dior. Dior announced that it has paused indefinitely a “capsule collection” collaboration between Dior men’s artistic director Kim Jones, and Scott’s Cactus Jack label, which was due out next year. The partnership was to be Dior’s first with a musician.

President Biden signs $770 billion defense bill

President Joe Biden signed a nearly $770 billion defense bill into law on Monday, which includes an overhaul on sex assault crimes prosecution. The National Defense Authorization Act for military appropriations in the 2022 fiscal year includes $740 billion for the Department of Defense, which is $25 billion more than Biden’s budget request. It also includes $27.8 billion for  Department of Energy defense-related activities and another $378 million for other defense-related activities.

The bill includes funding to change how the military prosecutes sexual assault cases, along with other items, such as military construction, basic pay increase for troops, national security programs and intelligence programs, a brief White House statement shows.

The bill also specifically includes a 2.7% pay raise for troops, an independent commission to review the two-decade war in Afghanistan. Biden said in a White House statement: “The Act provides vital benefits and enhances access to justice for military personnel and their families,” Biden also said in the statement that “unfortunately,” certain sections of the legislation continue to bar the use of funds to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees into the United States or custody of certain foreign countries unless certain conditions are met. He added that these restrictions “constrain the flexibility of the executive branch with respect to its engagement in delicate negotiations with foreign countries over the potential transfer of detainees,” and urged Congress to eliminate the restrictions.

CDC cuts COVID-19 isolation guidance down to 5 days amid Omicron surge

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) announced on Monday that Americans who test positive for COVID-19 but do not have symptoms can stop isolating after five days as long as they continue wearing masks, cutting in half the agency’s previous isolation period down from 10 days.  The CDC also said it was loosening its guidance for quarantining after a COVID-19 exposure for unvaccinated Americans or those eligible for a booster who have not yet received their additional shot. It now recommends a five-day quarantine followed by five days of strict mask-wearing, but says that if quarantine “is not feasible,” it can be skipped as long as they wear a mask in the 10 days after exposure.

The CDC says people who are fully vaccinated and boosted do not need to quarantine after exposure. The agency had previously said all vaccinated Americans, regardless of whether they had received a booster shot, did not need to quarantine after a close contact as long as they did not have symptoms.

The change mirrors a similar move by the CDC announced last week to shorten its isolation guidance for health care workers. Many communities are now seeing record numbers of cases and rising hospitalizations fueled by the variant. Nationwide, the daily average of cases tallied by the CDC has accelerated to a pace not seen since the deadly surge of cases last winter.

Several industries have blamed the recent surge in Omicron cases for crippling much of their workforce. Thousands of flights were canceled or delayed over the holiday weekend, as pilots, flight attendants and other airline workers were forced to isolate after breakthrough cases. In deciding to shorten the recommended isolation period, the CDC said data shows the majority of transmission “occurs early in the course of illness,” within two days before symptoms begin and three days after. The CDC also cited recent data from South Africa and the United Kingdom, where Omicron has spread widely, showing a booster shot could restore vaccine effectiveness against infection.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo suffers chipped bone, torn ligament in his right thumb

More information about the injury to Jimmy Garoppolo has been revealed. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback suffered a torn ligament and chipped bone in his right thumb. Those are details that head coach Kyle Shanahan failed to mention to reporters during a conference call after Monday’s practice. Garoppolo did not participate in Monday’s bonus practice.

When a reporter asked Shanahan if Garoppolo suffered a fracture, and the coach stated the quarterback sustained a right thumb sprain at the end of the second quarter of last Thursday night’s 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans. He added that the 49ers would re-evaluate Garoppolo on Wednesday. Shanahan said of the injury:  “It didn’t feel great today. He wasn’t able to throw today, and we’ll see how it is on Wednesday. Hopefully, it will get better.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter later reported that Garoppolo suffered a UCL tear and fracture, which would be a more serious injury than the coach disclosed.  Rookie Trey Lance will make his second NFL start if Garoppolo needs to sit out.  Shanahan said of Lance: “I think this last month with Trey has been his best consecutive four weeks of practice since we’ve had him. He’s had a number of good days, and he’s had some bad days like most guys do. But as far as his consistency and stuff, I feel this last month has been his best.”

The 49ers sit at 8-7 and are currently the sixth seed in the NFC playoff picture. San Francisco is preparing to host the Houston Texans on Sunday and finish the regular season against the Los Angeles Rams.

NBA to shorten quarantine time to six days

According to a memo from the NBA, vaccinated NBA players, coaches, referees and staff members will now only have to quarantine for six days if COVID-19 testing data shows they are no longer infectious. The current time to clear quarantine is 10 days. The NBA and National Basketball Players Association agreed to the change. Individuals can still clear quarantine if they test negative for the virus twice with each test coming 24 hours apart.

The NBA has found that those who have received the COVID-19 booster expel the virus from their system far more quickly than those who have not. Expert research data contributed to the NBA’s decision to shorten the quarantine period, showing that no one with a cycle threshold over 35 has been shown to be infectious for more than six days. CT measures how many times a test needs to cycle to detect the virus in a person.

Earlier Monday, the CDC announced that individuals who test positive for the virus will only need to quarantine for five days, as opposed to the previous 10 days recommended, if they are asymptomatic.
