CBS’s legal drama ‘Bull’ to end after Season 6

CBS legal drama ‘Bull’ will end with its sixth season.  Bull is loosely based on the work of Dr. Phil McGraw as a jury consultant; McGraw is also an executive producer of the show.  Series star Michael Weatherly tweeted the news, saying: “It’s been my privilege to play Dr. Jason Bull but after 6 seasons of incredible storylines, it’s time to pursue new creative challenges and bring his story to a close.”  Sources confirm that Weatherly’s decision to move on led to the decision to bring the series to an end.

The series has dealt with a good amount of controversy.  In 2018, CBS paid actress Eliza Dushku $9.5 million to settle a sexual harassment claim against Weatherly. Dushku alleged he made a series of inappropriate comments to her while she recurred on the show’s first season.  The actress had originally signed on to the show with the possibility of becoming a regular in season two, but her character was written out following her complaint and the settlement.  In addition, showrunner Glenn Gordon Caron was let go from the show and dropped from an overall deal at CBS Studios following an internal investigation into allegations that Caron fostered an unhealthy work environment on Bull. Actor Freddy Rodriguez also departed after an investigation.

CBS said in a statement:  “For six seasons, Bull has established itself as a ratings winner with its fresh take on the judicial process never before seen on television. We extend our thanks to the talented cast, Michael Weatherly, Geneva Carr, Yara Martinez, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Christopher Jackson, MacKenzie Meehan, the incredible creative team led by Kathryn Price and Nichole Millard, and our hard-working crew, for bringing to life these innovative stories. We also thank our loyal viewers and look forward to providing them with a final run of compelling episodes filled with the humor, intelligence and twists that have made the drama a fan favorite.”

Post Malone announces new album “Twelve Carat Toothache”

Two years after Post Malone put out his chart-topping album “Hollywood’s Bleeding”, Malone revealed to Billbord that his next album will be titled “Twelve Carat Toothache.”

As of now, an official release date hasn’t been revealed — however, Malone did note that this will be his shortest album to date, clocking in at 45 minutes.  Said Post: “Trying to shove 20 to 25 songs, it doesn’t work. Talking to the label [it’s like], ‘Oh, if you have less songs, you’re not going to stream as much,’ but the whole thing is that you don’t want to compromise your art and your gut vibe on anything.”

Earlier this month, Malone’s manager Dre London wrote on Instagram that Post’s label, Republic, was holding up the album — possibly over the album’s length. Post explained: “I’ve made a lot of compromises, especially musically, but now I don’t feel like I want to anymore. I don’t need a No. 1; that doesn’t matter to me no more, and at a point, it did.”

You can check out the full cover story with Post Malone on Billboard.

Grimes releases music video for her new song “Shinigami Eyes” featuring BLACKPINK’s Jennie

After teasing her new song “Shinigami Eyes” on social media, Grimes has dropped the new video for her latest single featuring BLACKPINK’s Jennie.

Grimes told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe in an interview: “Shinigami Eyes” was a “label executive decision song” that didn’t fit into the “space opera” narrative of her next project, a planned double album.  “Shinigami Eyes” was inspired by the cult Japanese anime and film Death Note — the song’s title is a reference to the blood-red eyes in that story — about a high school student who discovers a magical book that allows him to kill anyone whose name he writes on the pages.

“Shinigami Eyes” is the follow-up to Grimes’ Dec. 2021 single “Player of Games“; it’s unclear if either of the two singles will wind up on her upcoming double album.  Grimes said of the double LP, which currently has the title Book 1“I think I decided that the record needs to be a double album. I made a bunch of stuff and I just want to make a bunch more stuff. There’s just more kind of sonic, conceptual ideas that I think need to get done to make everything make more sense. And we kind of have two album covers and it seems like a waste to throw on one of them away.”

Pfizer begins testing an omicron-specific COVID-19 vaccine

Pfizer and BioNTech announced on Tuesday that they have begun a clinical trial to evaluate a new, omicron-specific vaccine for COVID-19. People who are vaccinated and boosted appear to be better protected against severe disease and hospitalization from omicron, but the highly contagious variant has still led to breakthrough cases and a surge in overall infections.

Kathrin U. Jansen, Pfizer’s senior vice president and head of vaccine research and development, said in a statement: “While current research and real-world data show that boosters continue to provide a high level of protection against severe disease and hospitalization with Omicron, we recognize the need to be prepared in the event this protection wanes over time and to potentially help address Omicron and new variants in the future.”

The study will include over 1,000 participants divided into three groups — One group includes people who have already received two doses of the current Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and will also receive the omicron vaccine;  another group includes those with three doses of the current Pfizer vaccine who will also get the omicron vaccine; and the third group includes unvaccinated people who will receive three shots of the omicron vaccine.

Currently, the Food and Drug Administration authorized the current Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in people ages 5 and older. The Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are authorized for adults.

2nd NYPD officer, Wilbert Mora, dies from injuries in Harlem shooting

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell announced Tuesday that NYPD officer Wilbert Mora, who was shot while responding to a domestic call in Harlem last Friday, has died from his injuries.  Mora was 27 years old. Commissioner Sewell said: “It’s with great sadness I announce the passing of Police Officer Wilbert Mora. Wilbert is 3 times a hero. For choosing a life of service. For sacrificing his life to protect others. For giving life even in death through organ donation. Our heads are bowed & our hearts are heavy.”

Mora is the 2nd NYPD officer to die as a result of the shooting. Mora’s partner, rookie officer Jason Rivera, 22, was struck first at the scene and died from his injuries.  The suspect, 47-year-old Lashawn McNeil, was shot in the head and arm and remained in critical condition until he died Monday from his injuries.

Mora, a four-year veteran of the NYPD, was shot in the head Friday night in Harlem during the incident.  NYC Mayor Eric Adams said: “Wilbert Mora was a hero. He served his city, protected his community and gave his life for our safety. Our hearts are heavy. Our city is in mourning. To his family, loved ones, and brothers and sisters in the NYPD: Your city is standing with you today and always.”

Baseball Hall Of Fame announces former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz as its only inductee for the Class of 2022

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2022 on Tuesday, with former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz becoming the only player eligible to gain induction into the HOF this year. Ortiz was named on 307 of the 394 ballots (77.9%). During his 20-year career, Ortiz collected 541 home runs, 632 doubles, 1,768 RBIs, a .931 OPS, 10 All-Star selections, seven Silver Slugger Awards and three World Series titles.

Other eligible players including Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa and Curt Shilling were in their 10th and final year of eligibility in the annual balloting. Tuesday’s announcement confirmed that these four names left on the ballot will not make the Hall of Fame via traditional voting. The balloting showed Barry Bonds (66 percent), Roger Clemens (65.2 percent), Curt Schilling (58.6 percent) and Sammy Sosa (18.5 percent), which fall under the 75% threshold. The four can, however, still be inducted into the Hall of Fame via the committee route. In the case of Sosa, Clemens and Bonds, long-standing allegations of steroid use may prevent that from ever taking place. And in the case of Shilling, a series of post-retirement controversies will most likely prevent his HOF induction via committee.

Ortiz will join the six men voted in by two different Era Committees back in December. The Golden Days and Early Baseball Era committees elected Jim Kaat and Tony Oliva, and the late Bud Fowler, Gil Hodges, Minnie Miñoso and Buck O’Neil. They will all be honored at the July 24, 2022, induction ceremony in Cooperstown, N.Y.

New Orleans Saints’ Sean Payton announces retirement after 15 seasons as head coach

New Orleans Saints’ head coach Sean Payton is retiring after 15 years with the organization. Payton informed New Orleans of his decision Tuesday. Payton has three years remaining on his deal with the Saints after signing his latest extension in 2019.

During a press conference, Payton thanked Saints owner Gayle Benson and her late husband, former Saints owner Tom Benson. Payton said he was glad Benson told him to spend some time away from the team for the past couple weeks before he made his decision, “because it is a big decision that affects a lot of people.”  Payton also said he doesn’t like the word “retirement”, and he can’t rule out a return to coaching in the future. But “that’s not where my heart is right now.” He added: “I don’t know what’s next,” which disputes reports that he has talked with TV or media outlets for future endeavors.

Payton has been the Saints head coach since 2006, turning the franchise into one of the NFL’s best during his tenure. The 58-year-old Payton went 152–89 in 15 seasons with New Orleans, leading the Saints to the playoffs nine times, and to its first Super Bowl title in the 2009 season with a 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. In the 2021-22 season, New Orleans finished 9–8, utilizing four different starting quarterbacks as the franchise dealt with a number of injuries and COVID-19 absences.

Payton is the longest-tenured head coach in Saints history, and the franchise’s all-time leader in games coached (241), wins (151), playoff games (17) and playoff wins (nine).
