Severe, widespread winter storm disrupts travel, knocks out power

A severe winter storm caused major disruptions on Thursday, cancelling thousands of flights and knocking out power to customers in Tennessee and Texas. By Thursday afternoon, at least 5,800 flights were canceled, according to FlightAware.  In addition, nearly 124,000 customers were without power in Tennessee, while approximately 60,000 had lost power in Texas.

The National Weather Service warned that widespread heavy snow and freezing rain could produce flash floods across portions of the south The weather service said the storm is impacting parts of the country, from North Texas to New York,  and is forecast to continue well into Friday.

Cities in Illinois and Michigan had a foot of snow in the storm’s first wave; and parts of Indiana expected up to 18 inches of snow. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott warned of treacherous roads and possible power outages, saying: “Either ice on power lines … could cause a power line to go down, or it could be ice on trees that causes a tree to fall on power lines.”  Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear declared a weather state of emergency, closing state office buildings and issuing an executive order to protect Kentucky residents from price gouging during the emergency.

NBA reveals new All-Star MVP trophy dedicated to the late Kobe Bryant

On Thursday, the NBA revealed its new All-Star Game MVP trophy dedicated to late Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. The league permanently renamed the All-Star Game MVP award after Bryant in February 2020, less than a month after he, his daughter Gianna Bryant and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, Calif.  The NBA worked with artist Victor Solomon to design the new trophy, which will be presented for the first time at the 2022 All-Star Game on Feb. 20 in Cleveland. Solomon also redesigned a number of other trophies handed out during All-Star weekend to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the game.

Christopher Arena, head of On-Court and Brand Partnerships at the NBA, said:“As the NBA celebrates its 75th anniversary season, this collection of All-Star trophies represents the continued growth and evolution of our game. Through our collaboration with Victor Solomon, these trophies incorporate deep storytelling, reimagining our previous All-Star trophies in a modern aesthetic, and now serve as the new standards of excellence that future generations of All-Stars will strive to reach each year. Redesigning the All-Star trophies gave us a special opportunity to create event awards worthy of the energy and excitement the moment creates, while introducing the full collection’s visual, aesthetic language.”

The new ‘Kobe Bryant Trophy’ includes a base and four levels, the heights of which correspond to the years of Bryant’s four All-Star MVP wins. The 14-inch-tall, crystal, star-shaped columns include an embedded 24-karat gold basketball featuring the names of the respective competitions. Each level also includes a symbolic number of stars: Level 1 has 24 stars to represent the total number of players in the All-Star Game each year and Bryant’s jersey number; Level 2 has 10 stars for the number of All-Star Game starters and Bryant’s No. 10 jersey for Team USA at the Olympics; Level 3 has five stars for Bryant’s five NBA championships; and Level 4 has one star for his single Maurice Podoloff Trophy win as the 2007-08 Kia NBA MVP.

Team USA women’s hockey star Brianna Decker out of Winter Olympics after suffering serious leg injury

Team USA women’s hockey star Brianna Decker is out of the Winter Olympics after suffering a serious leg injury during the teams’s first game in Beijing. The 30-year-old Decker was taken off the ice after a collision with Finland’s Ronja Savolainen during the preliminary round women’s hockey game. Decker could be heard screaming in pain after Savolainen’s leg hooked around Decker’s leg and the pair fell to the ice, with the Finnish player landing on top of her opponent. Decker was unable to put any weight on the leg after the incident in the first period of the game. Decker was later seen on crutches next to the bench and was embraced by teammates as they left the ice.

Team USA says that the forward, considered one of the world’s best players, will miss the rest of the competition.  Decker has helped Team USA to six gold medals and two silvers at the World Championships. She won a silver medal with the team at the 2014 Olympics at Sochi, but helped the US win a gold in 2018 in Pyeongchang. In 2019, Decker also took part in the NHL All-Star Skills Competition.

U.S.A. beat Finland 5- 2 and will play the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) on Friday.

Take a look at the trailer for the Randy Travis documentary ‘More Life’

A new documentary about the life of country star Randy Travis, titled ‘More Life’, will premiere on the Circle Network on Thursday, Feb. 10.

More Life highlights a performance Travis gave in 2012 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his 1986 debut album, Storms of Life.  That album went Platinum, marking the first time a debut album had done so in country music.  That performance would be the last time Travis would sing those songs; on July 7, 2013, it was announced that Travis was in critical condition after suffering a stroke just one day prior. In a trailer for the documentary, Travis’ wife Mary says the song for which the documentary is named — ‘More Life’ — became their battle cry during his recovery as they fought for more life and more time.

Travis has earned 18 No. 1 hits throughout his career, including “Forever and Ever, Amen”, “On the Other Hand” and “I Told You So.” He also garnered eight Platinum albums, seven Grammy Awards and 10 ACM Awards. Travis’ gospel songs — such as “Three Wooden Crosses” and “Baptism” — also won him Dove Awards. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.
