Federal regulators extend mask mandate for all commercial flights and other public transportation

On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Transportation Security Administration announced that a COVID-19 mandate that requires all passengers to wear masks on commercial flights is being extended until at least mid-April.

The mandate had been set to expire on March 18, but the extension now delays that deadline until April 18.  The federal mask requirement applies to airports, commercial flights, buses and passenger rail systems.

The TSA said it made the decision based on a recommendation from the CDC, saying in a statement: “CDC will work with government agencies to help inform a revised policy framework for when, and under what circumstances, masks should be required in the public transportation corridor. This revised framework will be based on the COVID-19 community levels, risk of new variants, national data, and the latest science. We will communicate any updates publicly if and/or when they change.”

Tentative $83M settlement is reached for victims of Florida condo collapse

A tentative $83 million settlement has been reached for owners who survived the Surfside condo collapse in South Florida.  The partial collapse of the 12-story Champlain Towers South condo building on June 24, 2021, in Surfside, Fla., near Miami Beach, killed 98 people, destroyed 55 condominium units, and the remainder of the 136-unit building had to be demolished.

A class action suit was filed by victims whose family members died in the collapse and victims who suffered economic harm, against defendants including developers, engineers, inspectors and consultants.  The dispute between the victims of property loss and the families of non-owners who lost their lives in the collapse with some of the families of those who died believing that they should receive full compensation before other people are compensated for property claims.

Circuit Judge Michael Hanzman’s order grants preliminary approval to the settlement agreement between property claims and wrongful death or personal injury claims. The agreement creates an $83 million Common Fund to compensate unit owners for the loss of their condominium units and contents, in exchange for relieving them from any liability in the injury and wrongful death claims, according to the document.  The judge wrote:  “Unit owners will receive $55 million of the first $100 million recovered from all sources. The remaining $33 million will be paid out of the first dollars recovered over $100 million. All other funds will inure solely for the benefit of wrongful death claimants…..Absent some defect being brought to the court’s attention, it is highly likely to secure final approval.”  The final approval hearing is slated for 2 p.m. on March 30 at the Miami Dade County Children’s Courthouse.

Major League Baseball and MLBPA agree to terms on new labor agreement; Opening Day set for April 7th

The baseball lockout has reached an end after 99 days. On Thursday, MLB players and team owners agreed to terms on a new labor agreement, with the players’s board voting in favor of MLB’s latest proposal at 26–12. The agreement ends the three-month lockout and clears the path for a 162-game 2022 season. After MLB owners signed off on the agreement with an unanimous 30-0 vote, MLB’s three-month labor dispute officially came to an end. The mandatory spring training report date for all clubs is Sunday, with exhibition games starting March 17 or 18.  In addition, free-agent signings can begin Thursday night. The league now plans to start 2022 regular-season campaigns on April 7, one week later that it was initially scheduled.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said during a news conference“I am genuinely thrilled to say Major League Baseball is back and we’re going to play 162 games. I want to start by apologizing to our fans. I know the last few months have been difficult.”

The new CBT jumps from $230 million to $244 million over the five-year deal, and the minimum salary for players with less than three years of Major League service time increases from $570,500 to $700,000, eventually growing to $780,000. Additionally, a bonus pool worth $50 million will be distributed among those younger players who have yet to reach arbitration.  Other key points of the agreement include: postseason expansion to 12 teams; advertisements on player jerseys and helmets; a designated hitter in the National League; implementation of a draft lottery; and a 45-day window for MLB to make rule changes — among them a pitch clock, larger bases and a ban on shifts in the 2023 season.

Netflix also posted on Twitter: “Pamela Anderson is ready to tell her story in a new documentary. The film, which has been in the making for several years, will feature the pop culture icon setting the record straight as she looks back on her professional path and her personal journey.”  The post also included a picture  of a handwritten note, written by Anderson on Netflix letterhead, which reads: “My life/ A thousand imperfections/ A million misperceptions/ Wicked, wild and lost/ Nothing to live up to /I can only surprise you /Not a victim, but a survivor /And alive to tell the real story.”

The yet-to-be-titled film is directed by Ryan White (“The Keepers,” “Ask Dr. Ruth”), and features exclusive access to Anderson, as well as archival footage and her personal journals.  Anderson’s son Brandon Thomas Lee, who serves as a producer on the project, reposted his mother’s note on his Instagram story, emphasizing the phrase, “The real story”  — as did Anderson’s younger son, Dylan Jagger Lee.
