Shooting outside Des Moine, Iowa high school leaves 1 dead, 2 critically injured

One teenager was killed and two others were in critical condition after a shooting on Monday afternoon outside a high school in Des Moine, Iowa.  A 15-year-old boy did not survive his injuries, said Des Moines Fire Department spokesperson Ahman Douglass. Two others, a 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old girl, were hospitalized in critical condition.

The shooting happened outside on the East High School campus. It has not been confirmed whether the victims were students at the school. East Principal Jill Versteeg said “I think we can all agree an event like this is everyone’s worst nightmare. Tonight, hug your students and love them.”  A statement from Des Moines Public Schools said that East High School will be closed Tuesday, adding: “The DMPS grief team will be available at East High for students and staff beginning tomorrow through the remainder of the week. School counselors will be available at our other schools for students who need additional support.”

Des Moines confirmed the shooting took place on school grounds, but outside the main building before 3 p.m on Monday.  Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said potential suspects were detained, but no charges had been filed as of press time: “We’ve got some potential suspects detained. That will be a piece that moves through the night that we’re going to have to be working on. The kids in that school are our community’s most precious cargo. So the medics and the firefighters did an outstanding job getting up here.”

Ukraine cites modest progress on humanitarian corridors after third round of peace talks with Russia

Ukraine side cited progress in establishing humanitarian corridors, despite negotiators from Ukraine and Russia failing to reach a breakthrough during a third round of peace talks on Monday.  Safe corridors meant to allow Ukrainian civilians to flee the country, which were negotiated in the second round of talks, failed to materialize earlier in the day. The cease-fire began early Monday to allow refugees to flee in four Ukrainian cities — Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy and the southern port city of Mariupol — but was quickly shattered.

Lead Ukrainian negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak said there had been small but “positive” movement in “improving the logistics of humanitarian corridors” under which local cease-fires could be set up to facilitate the evacuation of civilians as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its 12th day. Podolyak said in a Twitter post: “Intensive consultations have continued on the basic political block of the regulations, along with a ceasefire and security guarantees.”

His Russian counterpart, Vladimir Medinsky, however, said no substantial progress had been made in Monday’s talks, telling reporters: “Our expectations from negotiations were not fulfilled. We hope that next time we will be able to take a more significant step forward.”  Medinsky said he “hoped there would be progress” in an upcoming fourth round of talks at an unspecified date and location.

NFL suspends Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley indefinitely for betting on games during 2021 season

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced Monday in a news release that Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley has been suspended for the 2022 NFL season for betting on games.  The release stated that the 27-year-old Ridley bet on games during the 2021 season. Ridley can appeal the suspension within three days, and can petition for reinstatement Feb. 15, 2023. Ridley tweeted Monday afternoon that he wagered a total of $1,500 and doesn’t “have a gambling problem.  Just gone be more healthy when I come back.”

The league said Ridley’s betting activity took place during a five-day period in late November, while he was away from the Falcons and team facilities. Ridley appeared in five games last season, before stepping away from football in November to address his mental health.  The NFL said it “uncovered no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way.”

Goodell wrote: “There is nothing more fundamental to the NFL’s success — and to the reputation of everyone associated with our league — than upholding the integrity of the game. This is the responsibility of every player, coach, owner, game official, and anyone else employed in the league. Your actions put the integrity of the game at risk, threatened to damage public confidence in professional football, and potentially undermined the reputations of your fellow players throughout the NFL.” Goodell also commended Ridley for reporting for an interview and admitting his actions.

The Atlanta Falcons said in a statement: “We were first made aware of the league’s investigation on Feb. 9. We have cooperated fully with the investigation since receiving notice and support the league’s findings and actions. We are moving forward in the 2022 season with the decision that was made. With the decision that was made by the NFL, any further questions on the investigation should be directed to the league office.”

Ridley joined the Falcons in 2018. He totaled 90 catches for 1,374 yards and nine scores in 15 games in 2020, and totaled 31 catches for 281 yards and two scores to start his 2021 campaign. Ridley was set to make $11.1 million in base salary in 2022, but that will now carry over into the 2023 campaign.
