Major League Baseball Lockout: MLBPA makes first proposal since cancelation; league claims offer ‘went backwards’

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association met for more than 90 minutes on Sunday, which included the MLBPA making a proposal, the first since MLB commissioner Rob Manfred canceled the first two series on the 2022 schedule last week. The sides are still far apart on core economic issues, leading to the possibility that more canceled games could be on the way.

According to The Athletic, the most notable development in the union’s proposal is their willingness to give Manfred and the league the ability to implement three on-field changes with just 45 days’ notice (presently, the league must offer the union a year of notice ahead of such changes.) Those three exceptions include installing a pitch clock, larger bases, and shift restrictions. The rule changes would not be allowed to go into effect until next year, or heading into the 2023 season. The Players Association also dropped its proposed starting point for a pre-arbitration bonus pool to $80 million, down from $85 million.

Despite those changes, the league said the proposal was moving backward, alleging that the MLBPA said verbally in Florida last week that the players were in a different place on the pre-arbitration bonus pool than what they proposed on Sunday. MLB spokesperson Glen Caplin said Sunday afternoon: “We were hoping to see some movement in our direction to give us additional flexibility and get a deal done quickly. The Players Association chose to come back to us with a proposal that was worse than Monday night and was not designed to move the process forward. On some issues, they even went backwards. Simply put, we are deadlocked. We will try to figure out how to respond, but nothing in this proposal makes it easy.”

Pistol Annies singer Ashley Monroe reveals her rare blood cancer is gone

Pistol Annies singer Ashely Monroe was diagnosed with the rare blood cancer ‘Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia’ last July, and just this past December finished chemotherapy to treat the cancer, which is said to be incurable.

However Monroe had some good news for her followers; sharing that she had her PET scans on Feb. 24 to determine if the treatments worked, and to her amazement, doctors told her it was gone without a trace.  Monroe posted on Instagram: “Well IT DID!  My blood work looked amazing and normal and so did my scans! They say this kind is incurable, but I’m just gonna believe it IS curable, and it’s gone forever. That was truly one of the most difficult seasons of my life.”

When Monroe shared her diagnosis last year, she said her journey started when routine lab work revealed she was anemic. She thought she would double up on cheeseburgers and take extra vitamins, but a bone marrow biopsy pinpointed the rare blood cancer. She started chemotherapy the next day and vowed to stay positive.

In her latest update, Monroe also wrote that she didn’t know it was “possible to feel so sick and defeated” but now believes it “was meant to be.”  Ashely added: “I know it has made me a better person. Thank you for your prayers, I truly felt them. I love you all. Ready to make and share more music ! To say I have a lot to say, is an understatement.”

Haim shares music video for their new song ‘Lost Track’

Haim has shared the video for their new single “Lost Track,” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Anderson has previously directed videos for Haim for the tracks “Night So Long,” “Right Now,” and “Little Of Your Love.” The visual for “Lost Track” finds the band joining a 1950s social club, turning into ladies who lunch alongside friends and family of the acclaimed film director.

In an Instagram post, Haim explained the inspiration for the song, noting they had the last line of the chorus written “for the last year but could never figure out what to do with it. We kept writing it down, not knowing where it should live. Cut to PTA shooting the director’s cut issue for @wmag with our baby sister on the cover! An opportunity arose to do a quick music component while shooting the story. Paul mentioned having the book “Appointment in Samarra” as a possible direction. So we did some digging around the book and were inspired by the scene where the main character throws a drink in someone’s face at a country club. We were inspired by the idea of someone doing something so drastic to get out of a situation they felt uncomfortable in – just to feel something. We finally remembered that lyric and wrote and recorded the song and shot the whole thing in a few days! Anyway, felt fun to do something very collaborative/ off the cuff.”

Haim will will be touring across North American beginning next month in support of its 2020 album Women In Music Part III, kicking-off in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 24 and conclude in Bend, Oregon on June 14.

You can watch the video for “Lost Track” here.

Representatives from MLB, MLBPA resume labor talks at informal NYC meeting on Thursday

According to ESPN, multiple sources confirm that representatives from Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association held an informal meeting Thursday in New York to resume talks. Sources say that MLB deputy commissioner Dan Halem and union attorney Bruce Meyer — the lead negotiators for both parties — were joined by league senior vice president Morgan Sword and MLBPA attorney Ian Penny.

The 90 minute meeting covered the core issues that led MLB to cancel the first week of regular-season games earlier this week.  With owners and players unable to agree on a collective bargaining agreement to replace the previous deal that expired Dec. 1, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred canceled the first two series for each of the 30 teams, cutting each club’s schedule from 162 games to likely 156 at most. A total of 91 games were erased, making it MLB’s first labor conflict to cause games to be canceled since the 1994-95 strike canceled the World Series for the first time in 90 years.

There was no indication as of Thursday afternoon when the sides planned to meet again. The MLBPA executive board was to hold a conference call later Thursday.
