Day 1 of hearings begin for Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson

President Biden’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, addressed senators on the first day of confirmation hearings on Monday, telling the lawmakers she would “decide cases from a neutral posture” if they approve her nomination to the high court.  Jackson told members of the Senate Judiciary Committee: “Members of this committee: If I am confirmed, I commit to you that I will work productively to support and defend the Constitution and the grand experiment of American democracy that has endured over these past 246 years. During this hearing, I hope that you will see how much I love our country and the Constitution, and the rights that make us free.”

Jackson sat silently for most of the 4.5-hour session as the 22 committee members delivered opening statements and previewed their lines of inquiry for the two days of questioning ahead. Many Democrats lauded Jackson for shattering barriers with her nomination, and Republicans also applauded Jackson for her nomination, previewing the aspects of her professional record they plan to examine, namely the sentences she imposed on child pornography offenders while serving as a judge on the federal district court in Washington and clients she represented as a federal assistant public defender and in private practice. Many GOP members of the Judiciary panel pledged to avoid personal attacks on Jackson, but they still vowed to probe her judicial philosophy and views of the Supreme Court.

Jackson’s four-day confirmation hearings begin just 24 days after President Biden announced her as his nominee to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court.  Currently a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, Jackson served on the federal district court in Washington for eight years and was a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission. If appointed to the Supreme Court, Jackson will be the second-youngest justice at 51 years old.

The Colorado Rockies and third baseman Ryan McMahon agree on 6-year contract extension worth $70M

On Monday, the Colorado Rockies announced that they have agreed to a six-year contract extension worth $70M with third baseman Ryan McMahon. The deal will take McMahon four years into his scheduled free agency.

The 27-year-old McMahon took over at third base for the Rockies after they traded Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals last season. In his first full season, McMahon was good for 13 defensive runs saved, ranking him as the best third baseman in the majors.

McMahon became one of the Rockies’ top sluggers, with 47 home runs in his past two full seasons (2019 and 2021).  Rockies manager Bud Black said of McMahon: “with Mac, where he is now, there’s maturity, there’s service time, there’s an understanding of what it means to be a major-league player. My advice to Mac is, just be yourself. Be who you are. Go about it the right way every day.”

Jamey Johnson has been invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry, with Opry member Bill Anderson surprising Johnson with the invitation at the close of a writer’s round featuring Anderson, Johnson, and songwriter/producer Buddy Cannon.

During the show, the artists performed songs such as the smash “Give It Away,” which became a No. 1 for George Strait, “Everybody Wants To Be Twenty-One,” and “Cheaper Than A Shrink.”  After their final song Anderson said: “Jamey, you made your Opry debut 17 years ago and you’ve been a frequent guest many times. But Opry management told me to tell you that this is going to be your last guest appearance…The next time you appear on this stage you will be the newest member of our Opry cast and family!”

Johnson replied: “I accepted it 20 years ago! I really don’t know what to say except the obvious. I love country music. I would have never moved here if it wasn’t for that; for the Opry keeping it alive and for the fans. I love you. Thank you.”

Greta Van Fleet postpone the remainder of their US. spring tour due to guitarist Jake Kiszka’s bout with pneumonia

Greta Van Fleet have postponed the remainder of their U.S. spring tour as guitarist Jake Kiszka continues to struggle with pneumonia, having just been released from the hospital after spending four days there. Both Jake and his twin brother, lead vocalist Josh Kiszka, fell ill last week which forced the band to postpone one show in Flint, Michigan, their home state. The band then announced that Josh was recovered but that Jake was hospitalized with pneumonia, resulting in the postponement of two more shows.  Greta Van Fleet only played the first three shows on their 13-date spring leg. The initial three dates that were postponed have already been rescheduled for August and September, when Greta Van Fleet plan to hit the road for an extensive North American run. The other concert dates have not been rescheduled yet.

A statement from the band reads as follows: “We are disheartened to announce that the shows from March 22nd through April 2nd must be rescheduled for the health and safety of our brother, Jake. We recognize how upsetting this news is and share your disappointment. While Jake has been discharged after being hospitalized for four days, he is still struggling with pneumonia and its symptoms. The healing process is long and slower than anticipated. Jake wanted to push through, however doctors have advised doing so could potentially lead to further complications and a longer recovery. Right now, we are actively working on rescheduling and will share information about the new dates as quickly as possible. We are determined to play these shows.

To our fans in Madison, WI – unfortunately, the March 22nd performance must be canceled due to planned venue renovations later this year. However, we love you and your city, and will find a way to make it up to you. Refunds will be available at point of purchase. To the fans, friends, and family that planned to travel great lengths to be with us – your unwavering support has not gone unnoticed. We appreciate your dedication, understanding, grace, and sympathy. This is only the beginning of the tour and it is important for Jake to heal so the rest of ‘Dreams In Gold 2022’ can continue as planned through the rest of the year, starting in South America. Love and light, Jake, Josh, Sam, & Danny”

Tickets for Greta Van Fleet’s extensive North American run are available here.  The band will also serve as support Metallica for a series of shows in South America beginning in late April.
