Los Angeles Lakers fire head coach Frank Vogel after disappointing 33-49 season

On Monday, Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka announced that the organization has fired head coach Frank Vogel, after a disappointing 33-49 season in 2021-22 which prevented the Lakers from making the playoffs.  Pelinka said in a news release: “I have a tremendous amount of respect for Frank both on and off the court. Frank is a great coach and a good man. We will forever be grateful to him for his work in guiding us to the 2019-20 NBA championship. This is an incredibly difficult decision to make, but one we feel is necessary at this point. All of us here wish Frank and his wonderful family all the best for the future.”   Pelinka added at a press conference that the Lakers felt that it was “time for a new voice.  He was a great coach here and he’s going to go on to be a great coach somewhere else. We just felt like it was time for a new leader.”

The 48-year-old Vogel went 127-98 over four seasons with the Western Conference franchise, and had an 18-9 record with the Lakers in the postseason, including the franchise’s 2019-20 title run amid the league’s coronavirus pandemic shutdown.

Vogel has a 431-389 overall regular-season record in his 11 seasons as an NBA head coach. He was fired in 2018, after he led the Orlando Magic to a 54-110 record in two seasons with the franchise. Vogel also went 250-181 in six seasons with the Indiana Pacers, but was fired in 2016. He held previous roles as an assistant with the Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics.

Britney Spears announces pregnancy, expecting first child with fiancé Sam Asghari

Britney Spears announced via Instagram on April 11 that she’s expecting her third child, her first with fiancé Sam Asghari. In her caption, Spears also hinted she and Asghari may have gotten secretly married, referring to him as her “husband.”  The 40-year-old Spears said in her post: “I lost so much weight to go on my Maui trip only to gain it back  … I thought “Geez … what happened to my stomach ???” My husband said “No you’re food pregnant silly  !!!” So I got a pregnancy test … and uhhhhh well … I am having a baby  … 4 days later I got a little more food pregnant. It’s growing !!! If 2 are in there … I might just loose it  … I obviously won’t be going out as much due to the paps getting their money shot of me like they unfortunately already have … it’s hard because when I was pregnant I had perinatal depression … I have to say it is absolutely horrible  … women didn’t talk about it back then … some people considered it dangerous if a woman complained like that with a baby inside her … but now women talk about it everyday … thank Jesus we don’t have to keep that pain a reserved proper secret … This time I will be doing yoga every day !!! Spreading lots of joy and love 💕 !!!”

Spears has been vocal about her desire to have another child, claiming the rules of her past conservatorship made it unlikely. In a Los Angeles court in June 2021, she said that her father, Jamie Spears, and his team would not allow her to “get married and have a baby” under the conservatorship. After 13 years under the legal guardianship, Spears was officially freed from the conservatorship on November 12, 2021 by Judge Brenda Penny.

Spears first started dating Asghari in 2016, after they met on the set of her “Slumber Party” music video. The couple announced their engagement in September 2021, showed off the singer’s new diamond ring on social media.

Selena Gomez launches mental health platform ‘Wondermind’

Selena Gomez is using her years of mental health advocacy to launch Wondermind, a mental health company she’s heading up with her mom, Mandy Teefey, and media entrepreneur, Daniella Pierson. Wondermind was described in a press release as a platform that “destigmatizes and democratizes mental health.” Teefey said, “We hope to be the one stop shop for all mental fitness and conversation.”

The Wondermind website will serve as the main hub with daily content, interviews with experts, and other tools and resources — free of charge. There will also be a weekly podcast featuring a variety of guests, including therapists and celebrities who are known for their mental health advocacy. Gomez said, “We want to be that place where people feel comfortable to talk about the things under the hood. I really want people to be understood and seen and heard. It’s OK to not be OK.”  When Gomez revealed she had bipolar disorder in 2020, she said, “it was really freeing to know that information. It made me really happy because I started to have a relationship with myself, and that’s the best part.”

The eventual goal is to expand Wondermind into a production company that also releases books, exercise journals, and streaming content. Said Gomez in a press release: “Every person has their own mental health journey. If we ignore them, pretty them up or hide them from the world, it doesn’t change that they are very, very real.”

Police believe 2 people targeted victims at Cedar Rapids nightclub shooting which killed 2 and injured 10

Cedar Rapids Police confirm that investigators believe two men fired more than a dozen shots inside a Cedar Rapids nightclub left a man and a woman dead and 10 people wounded early Sunday morning.

Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman said that officers – who were just outside the Taboo Nightclub and Lounge because of an earlier incident – rushed inside and found the victims of the shooting, and that between 100 to 150 people ran out of the club at that time.  Officers helped treat the people who were wounded and rushed several of the victims to hospitals in squad cars.  The names of the man and woman who died were not released Sunday. Jerman said one survivor was in critical condition Sunday afternoon while the other injuries, which were all related to the gunfire.  The gunmen likely escaped as the crowd rushed out of the nightclub. Police were searching for suspects Sunday afternoon and no arrests had been reported.

Jerman said police haven’t determined the motive for the shooting but investigators believe one of the victims was targeted, adding: “This is another mindless and senseless gun-related incident involving a reckless disregard for human life. I remain livid and angered at the continued and blatant disregard and lack of respect for human life that continues. That said, I want to reassure the residents of this city that Cedar Rapids is a safe city.”  Those with information about the shooting are encouraged to call Cedar Rapids Police at 319-286-5491 or Linn County Crime Stoppers at 800-272-7463.

Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell urged residents to speak out against violence: “Shock, anger, grief, disappointment — just a few of the emotions that I’m sure we all feel today. And I can personally say that as a mother my heart goes out to those moms and dads today who are having the worst day of their lives. To the families of the injured, we are with you and we are praying for a swift recovery.”
