Glass Animals’ ‘Heat Waves’ remains at No. 1 for 5th week on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart

Glass Animals’ hit song “Heat Waves” first claimed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart a few weeks ago, and has remained at No. 1 since then. As of the new chart dated April 9, “Heat Waves” remains at No. 1 for the fifth week.

The song continues to make history for British groups tying for the sixth-most weeks spent at No. 1 on the Hot 100. It’s currently behind only The Beatles’ “Hey Jude,” The Police’s “Every Breath You Take,” Bee Gees’ “Night Fever,” UB40’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” and The Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand.”

“Heat Waves” also has set a new record for the most weeks at No. 1 for a song by a group on the Billboard 200 Global Chart, now leading for six weeks in a row. In addition, the song holds No. 1 on Billboard’s Radio Songs Chart for the fourth week in a row.

Elsewhere on the chart, Latto had a major week as “Big Energy” became her first top-10 hit, rising from No. 11 all the way up to No. 3. JID landed his first-ever top-5 song thanks to his Imagine Dragons collaboration “Enemy,” which rose from No. 7 to No. 5 this week.

Senate confirms Ketanji Brown Jackson to be first Black woman to sit on Supreme Court

The Senate voted on Thursday to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson, making her the first Black woman to serve as a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Senators voted 53-47 in favor of her confirmation. Three Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Mitt Romney of Utah and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — voted with Democrats to approve President Biden’s first nomination to the country’s highest court.

Jackson was with President Biden in the Roosevelt Room of the White House to watch the historic Senate vote. The White House also said Biden, Jackson and Vice President Kamala Harris will speak about the confirmation on Friday. The 51-year-old Jackson, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, was nominated in February; last month, she underwent questioning for two days before the Senate judiciary committee. While some Republicans grilled Jackson on her track record and accused her of being soft on crime as a judge, the committee ultimately passed Jackson’s nomination on to the full Senate.

Jackson’s confirmation maintains the Supreme Court’s 6-3 conservative edge. The last justice nominated and confirmed to the high court was Amy Coney Barrett in 2020. She was appointed by former President Donald Trump to succeed liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

House passes bill to provide $55 billion in grants for restaurants and other small businesses impacted by COVID-19

On Thursday, the House passed a $55 billion bill to aid restaurants and small businesses impacted by COVID-19.
The bill includes $42 billion for restaurants and $13 billion for other small businesses. The Senate still must vote to pass the bill for it to become law.

The money in this bill replenishes the Restaurant Revitalization Fund, created by the Biden American Rescue Plan that became law in 2021, which provided $28.6 billion for restaurants hit by the pandemic.

In addition to the $42 billion for restaurants in the House bill, it provides another $13 billion for small businesses ineligible for other pandemic relief programs.

Ex-coaches Steve Wilks and Ray Horton join Brian Flores’s racial bias lawsuit against the NFL

Two former NFL coaches have joined Brian Flores’s lawsuit against the NFL. Flores filed a lawsuit on Feb. 1 against the NFL, three of its franchises (Giants, Broncos and Dolphins), and 29 “John Doe” teams.  The lawsuit accused the league of racial discrimination in its hiring practices. Joining the complaint were the two former coaches — Steve Wilks and Ray Horton — who cited their own experiences in the league.

Wilks was the Cardinals’ head coach during the 2018 season. Wilks claims in the amended lawsuit that the team only hired him as a “bridge coach” and did not have long-term plans to keep him on the team, and said that general manager Steve Keim “made poor personnel decisions.” The amended complaint also asserts that though Keim was charged and pleaded guilty to a DUI—a fireable offense—in 2018, he was allowed to keep his job. Wilks was fired on Dec. 31 2018, and was replaced by Kliff Kingsbury, who had no NFL coaching experience prior to his hiring.

Horton claims the Titans conducted a “sham” interview with him in order to meet the Rooney Rule requirements. In 2016, the then defensive coordinator for Tennessee applied to the team’s head coach opening. Horton, now 61-years-old, had spent over two decades in the league coaching. The Titans ended up hiring Mike Mularkey, who later spoke on the Inside Pro Football podcast and admitted that Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk and her family had told him ahead of the Rooney Rule interviews that he would be hired.

Flores noted in his lawsuit that he participated in two sham interviews with the Giants and the Broncos. Both teams have denied the claims. Flores also claimed in the lawsuit that Miami owner Stephen Ross offered him a $100,000 bonus for each loss during the 2019 season, wanting to secure the league’s worst record so they could have the No. 1 pick in the ’20 draft. Ross has denied these claims.

Flores, Horton and Wilks issued statements on Thursday following the news the two former coaches would be joining the complaint.  Said Wilks: “When Coach Flores filed this action, I knew I owed it to myself, and to all Black NFL coaches and aspiring coaches, to stand with him. This lawsuit has shed further important light on a problem that we all know exists, but that too few are willing to confront. Black coaches and candidates should have exactly the same ability to become employed and remain employed, as white coaches and candidates. That is not currently the case, and I look forward to working with Coach Flores and Coach Horton to ensure that the aspiration of racial equality in the NFL becomes a reality.”

Pittsburgh Pirates and third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes agree to 8-year deal worth $70M

The Pittsburgh Pirates and third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes have agreed to an eight-year, $70 million deal. The deal, which is pending a physical, is the largest in Pirates history. It surpasses the deal that former catcher Jason Kendall signed back in 2000 for six-years and $60 million.

Hayes would have been eligible for free agency entering the 2027 season and will give up three guaranteed free-agent years and a potential fourth in his deal with the Pirates. The 25-year-old is entering his third MLB season with Pittsburgh. Last season, he earned .257/.316/.373 with six home runs, nine stolen bases, 20 doubles and 38 RBIs in 96 games (362 at-bats).

Pittsburgh opened its season on Thursday against the Cardinals. Ironically, not long after the deal was reported, Hayes exited the season opener in the first inning after appearing to injure his wrist while diving for a ball at third base, and was replaced by Diego Castillo.  Hayes had missed two months last season with a wrist injury, however, the Pirates announced during Thursday’s game that Hayes exited due to a spasm in his left forearm, and would be day-to-day.
