Arizona governor declares state of emergency in areas affected by Tunnel wildfire

On Thursday, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey declared a state of emergency in Coconino County due to the 20,000-acre Tunnel wildfire. The blaze started Sunday just north of Flagstaff and is 0% contained, according to the national wildfire clearinghouse website InciWeb. At least two dozen buildings have been destroyed and hundreds of homes near Flagstaff have been ordered to evacuate.  Fire crews are prioritizing residences, buildings and watersheds. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to InciWeb.

Governor Ducey said in a news release that the emergency declaration means officials can provide needed resources to impacted communities to “respond to and recover from the fire’s destruction. As strong winds fuel fires across Arizona, we are doing everything we can to keep Arizonans safe.”  He urged residents to “follow the guidance of fire officials, stay safe and respond to any evacuation notices. We will continue to monitor the situation and deploy additional resources as necessary.”

In addition, parts of the Coconino National Forest are also closed. The US Forest Service advised drivers to not take Forest Road 244A to avoid the closure of US 89, tweeting: “Maps are redirecting people around the fire using Forest Service roads, but those roads are UNSAFE and blocked off.”  The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality said gusty winds will continue overnight but the wind pattern will keep smoke away from Flagstaff.  They noted on their website: “As the next weather system approaches, gusty southwest winds of 25-35mph are forecast this afternoon. These winds may increase fire behavior and smoke production. Given the winds, smoke is forecast to stay low to the ground as it moves toward the northeast. The highest smoke impacts are forecast across the Navajo and Hopi reservations.”

Federal judge issues temporary order to block restrictive Kentucky abortion law

A federal judge on Thursday issued a temporary order blocking Kentucky’s new abortion law, which effectively outlaws the procedure in the state. U.S. District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings approved the temporary restraining order that stems from a lawsuit by Planned Parenthood, which challenged the legality of the law passed by the Kentucky General Assembly. The legislative body overrode Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto of the bill earlier this month. The bill bans the distribution of abortion pills by mail, tightens requirements for minors seeking abortions, and orders the creation of a system to register and monitor abortions.

Planned Parenthood is one of two abortion providers in Kentucky that said that they’ll have to shutter under the new law. EMW Women’s Surgical Center is the other provider, who filed its own lawsuit. Planned Parenthood said that while the Kentucky law doesn’t outright ban all abortions in the state, the restrictions would make it impossible for the two centers to comply it. Therefore, the law is “an unconstitutional ban on abortion in Kentucky.”

Milwaukee Bucks’ Khris Middleton out at least 2 weeks with sprained MCL in left knee

Milwaukee Bucks forward Khris Middleton will miss the remainder of the first-round playoff series vs. the Chicago Bulls with a sprained MCL in his left knee. The team said that Middleton will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Middleton, a three-time All-Star, previously injured his left knee in December.

Middleton left Game 2 of the Bucks’ first-round playoff series midway through the fourth quarter and didn’t return, during which Chicago evened the series with a 114-110 win. The Bucks entered the playoffs defending their 2021 championship.

Middleton has averaged 20.1 points, 5.4 assists and 2.5 threes across 66 appearances during the regular season. Pat Connaughton and Grayson Allen will likely take over for Middleton if it is determined he will remain out of the lineup. Jordan Nwora may also rejoin the rotation for added depth.

Video appears to show Mike Tyson punching passenger on JetBlue plane

Former professional boxer Mike Tyson allegedly punched a fellow passenger on a JetBlue flight, according to a video obtained by TMZ Sports.   The video appeared to show the former heavyweight boxing champion punching the person seated behind him on the flight, which was preparing to head for Florida. The incident occurred at San Francisco International Airport at 10:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday evening.

San Francisco Police Department said that officers detained two people involved in a physical altercation onboard an airplane at the San Francisco International Airport Wednesday night, before later being released. It said one person was treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries.  The department said they are “aware of video that possibly captured the incident, which surfaced following the initial investigation. That video has been forwarded to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office which has investigative jurisdiction on the incident.” Said the SFPD in the statement:  “That subject provided minimal details of the incident and refused to cooperate further with the police investigation. Both subjects were released under 849(b) of the California Penal Code pending further investigation.”  SFPD did not name the two people allegedly involved in the altercation.

In a statement, representatives for Tyson said that the other passenger started the incident. Tyson’s reps said on Thursday:  “Unfortunately, Mr. Tyson had an incident on a flight with an aggressive passenger who began harassing him and threw a water bottle at him while he was in his seat.”  Tyson retired from boxing in 2005 but did take part in an exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.

Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus celebrates being cancer-free and teases new music

Blink-182‘s Mark Hoppus is celebrating being cancer-free, and also teasing that he’s working on new music. Hoppus was diagnosed with 4-A diffuse large B-cell lymphoma last year, and revealed to fans in September that he was cancer-free.  The bassist wrote in a Thanksgiving message to fans last November: “I have so much to be thankful for today.”

Approached by a reporter from TMZ recently, Hoppus was asked about his health, and he responded: “Life’s great! I’m glad to be here.”  Hoppus added that he “wanted to get back into the studio and get back playing music, and get off [his] couch,” and that he hoped to release new music soon.

Hoppus performed live for the first time since announcing that he was cancer-free back in October, when the Blink-182 bassist/vocalist joined bandmate Travis Barker and musician Kevin “Thrasher” Gruft for Barker’s ‘House of Horrors’ pay-per-view broadcast. Dressed in Batman-themed attired, the trio played Blink songs ‘What’s My Age Again?’, ‘The Rock Show’ and ‘Family Reunion’.  Back in January, A Day To Remember released a new version of their single ‘Re-Entry’ featuring Hoppus, and he also appears on Avril Lavigne‘s new album ‘Love Sux’.
