Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Whitley lead 2022 Country Music Hall of Fame inductees

The Country Music Hall of Fame has announced a new group of inductees for 2022, with rock & roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis set to be inducted in the Veteran category, and Keith Whitley to join the Hall in the Modern category, and former RCA Records executive Joe Galante will become a member in the Nonperforming category. Brooks & Dunn announced the inductees in the Hall of Fame’s rotunda; the new class of inductees will be formally honored at the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Medallion Ceremony, to be held in the fall.

Said Lewis: “It’s hard for me to find something to say. But I’m here, I love you, I couldn’t have done it without you.”  Galante is a Queens native who relocated to Nashville in 1974 to work for RCA in 1982 at the age of 32. Among his signings during his long tenure were Alabama, Clint Black, Kenny Chesney, the Judds, Martina McBride, Carrie Underwood, and Keith Whitley. After leaving the music business, he devoted himself to mentoring young businesspeople and philanthropy. Said Galante when learning of his induction: “I didn’t know what to say, which was very unusual. This is an unmatched honor and I think it’s a tribute to all those people who helped me get here.”

Keith Whitley, who passed away in 1989 of alcohol poisoning at the age of 34, earned consecutive Number 1 songs with “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” “When You Say Nothing at All,” and “I’m No Stranger to the Rain.”  Whitley brought bluegrass background into the country mainstream, and his 1985 hit “Miami, My Amy” has had a resurgence of late, as it makes the rounds on TikTok. Whitley’s widow, country singer Lorrie Morgan, called the induction “a dream come true,” adding, “Keith never knew how good he was,  He never accepted that he could have a great record deal or that he could have as much as everybody else had. That’s how humble he was.”

Edie Falco to play Pete Davidson’s mom in Peacock series ‘Bupkis’

Edie Falco has been cast opposite Pete Davidson in the upcoming Peacock comedy series “Bupkis.” The actress and Davidson made the announcement during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation. “Bupkis” was picked up straight-to-series at Peacock back in April and is described as a ‘heightened, fictionalized version of Davidson’s real life.’  Per Peacock, it will combine grounded storytelling with absurd elements from the worldview for which Davidson is well known. Falco will star as Davidson’s mother.

Davidson will not only star in “Bupkis” will serves as co-writer and executive producer, along with Dave Sirus and Judah Miller will also write and executive produce, and Miller serving as showrunner. Saturday Night Live head Lorne Michaels, Andrew Singer, and Erin David of Broadway Video will also executive produce.

Falco is best known for her role in the iconic HBO series “The Sopranos,” for which she earned three Emmy Awards. She is also known for her starring role in Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie,” which saw her pick up another Emmy in 2010. Most recently she played Hilary Clinton in the third season of “American Crime Story” at FX, “Impeachment.”

Davidson’s real life has been the basis for an onscreen project before; he previously starred in the film “The King of Staten Island” which he co-wrote with director Judd Apatow and Dave Sirus.  The film was inspired in part by aspects of Davidson’s life, with Marisa Tomei played his mother in that film.

‘Black Mirror’ returning to Netflix for highly-anticipated Season 6

Netflix has picked up another season of the dystopian-anthology series ‘Black Mirror’, nearly three years since new episodes last aired.

Season 6 of Black Mirror is still in its early development and the casting phase. The new season will reportedly have more episodes than Season 5, which was comprised of just three new episodes– Striking Vipers with Anthony Mackie and Yahya Abdul-Matteen II, Smithereens with ‘Sherlock’ star Andrew Scott, and Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too, which starred Miley Cyrus.  The first two seasons of Black Mirror were also comprised of just three episodes, but Seasons 3 and 4 each had 6 episodes.

Sources close to the production tell Variety that Black Mirror Season 6 will adopt a more cinematic approach; each episode of Season 6 is rumored to be thought of as an ‘individual film,’ which hints that each episode will be over an hour in length. However, content of the episodes themselves remain unclear.

A premiere date for Black Mirror Season Six has not yet been announced.

Eric Clapton postpones shows after being diagnosed with COVID-19; announces North American 2022 fall tour dates

Eric Clapton has postponed shows in Zurich, Switzerland and Milan, Italy after contracting COVID-19.  Clapton was set to perform in Zurich on Tuesday, May 17th and Milan on Wednesday, May 18th, but those dates will be rescheduled after the legendary guitarist tested positive shortly after his second concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday, May 8th.  Rescheduled dates will be announced once they’re available, but confirms the shows are being planned within the next six months. Tickets will be valid for the newly announced dates.

A statement via Clapton’s social media pages read: “Eric Clapton is unfortunately suffering from Covid having tested positive shortly after the second concert at the Royal Albert Hall. He has been told by his medical advisors that if he were to resume traveling and performing too soon, it could substantially delay his full recovery. Eric is also anxious to avoid passing on any infection to any of his band, crew, Promoters, their staff and of course the fans. So, after intensive internal discussion, it has been decided with great regret and apologies to all those concerned to postpone the performances in Zurich on 17th May and Milan on 18th May, the present hope being to be able to resume the tour starting with the concerts in Bologna on 20th and 21st May. It is very frustrating that having avoided Covid throughout lockdown and throughout the period when travel restrictions have been in place Eric should have succumbed to Covid at this point in time, but we very much hope he will be sufficiently recovered by the end of the week to be able to perform the remainder of the planned performances. A further announcement will be made concerning the rescheduling of the postposed shows once suitable dates can be identified. The shows are due to be rescheduled within the next 6 months and tickets purchased will remain valid for the new rescheduled date.”

Clapton has also announced seven new North American dates for September 2022, which will kick off on September 8th in Columbus, OH with stops in Detroit, Pittsburgh and two nights each in Chicago and New York City. The shows will feature Jimmie Vaughan as special guest.  Tickets for the newly announced North American dates go on sale Friday, May 20th.  For a full list of tour dates and ticketing information, head to Clapton’s website.

Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson attend Primus’ ‘Farewell to Kings’ show

Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson were in attendance for Primus’s performance in Toronto, where they played the entirety of Rush’s 1977 album A Farewell to Kings at the show.

Lee shared a photo on his Instagram featuring himself, Lifeson and the members of Primus backstage describing the event, writing: “On Friday night we had the joyful experience of reuniting with our grand pals from [Primus] … Les, Ler, Herb and their gang. We sat side stage as they immaculately worked through a cool selection of classic [Primus] tunes which brought back fond memories of our touring together back in the early ’90s and then we were treated to the weird and wonderful experience of watching them perform our music: ‘A Farewell to Kings’ in its entirety. Totally nailed it! They did us proud and we thank them deeply for the tribute and the lasting friendship.”

Touring together in 1992 was a bucket-list moment for Primus frontman Les Claypool and his band members, Claypool said: “We were pretty delighted, partially because of the musical geek-out factor but mostly because the three guys whom we had admired so much from afar turned out to be truly great, down-to-earth humans, and like us, a tad eccentric.”

Primus is scheduled to tour North America until August before heading overseas to perform in Europe and the U.K.  You can find tour information and tickets – here.

Baby formula maker Abbott reaches agreement with FDA to reopen largest domestic plant amid nationwide shortage

Infant formula maker Abbott have reached an agreement with U.S. health officials to restart production at its largest domestic factory, hoping to ease a nationwide shortage tied to the plant’s shutdown earlier this year.  The terms of the agreement reached with the Food and Drug Administration, which has been investigating safety problems at the Sturgis, Michigan, facility, were not immediately disclosed by Abbott.

The Biden administration said the agreement not only serves to reopen the largest domestic manufacturing plant of infant formula, but will ease import rules to allow supplies from overseas. The consent decree is a binding legal agreement between the company and the federal government. Abbott has said it will take at least eight weeks to begin shipping new product to stores after production resumes.

The Biden administration has come under intense pressure over the last week to do more to ease the shortage of formula. Abbott’s plant came under scrutiny earlier this year after four infants became sick with bacterial infections after consuming powdered formula from the Michigan factory; two of those babies died. By February, the company halted production and recalled several brands of formula, which in turn strained the supply chain, causing disruptions and parents stockpiling.

White House reveals plans to protect and expand affordable housing amid rising inflation

On Monday, the White House announced steps to increase and protect affordable housing nationwide by using federal funds as an incentive for reforms in a move to counter rising inflation. The White House plan will use funding from the bipartisan infrastructure law to control housing costs.

The plan acknowledges that a shortage of available housing and rising rent is helping to fuel inflation. Biden’s administration says the crisis has slowly built up over the past five years to create a deficit in affordable housing and exacerbate rent, and was made worse due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The White House said in a statement Monday: “The president’s plan includes legislative and administrative actions that will help close America’s housing supply shortfall in five years, starting with the creation and preservation of hundreds of thousands of affordable housing units in the next three years. When aligned with other policies to reduce housing costs and ensure affordability, such as rental assistance and down payment assistance, closing the gap will mean more affordable rents and more attainable homeownership for Americans in every community.”

The White House added: “Today’s rising housing costs are years in the making. Fewer new homes were built in the decade following the Great Recession than in any decade since the 1960s — constraining housing supply and failing to keep pace with demand and household formation. This mismatch between housing supply and housing demand grew during the pandemic. While estimates vary, Moody’s Analytics estimates that the shortfall in the housing supply is more than 1.5 million homes nationwide.”

Administration officials said that the president’s proposed $5.8 trillion 2023 budget includes investments in housing inventory that would lead to an addition of 500,000 homes nationwide. The White House said it’s working with the Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Commerce to address supply chain disruption for building materials.
