Karine Jean-Pierre to replace Jen Psaki as new White House press secretary

On Thursday, President Joe Biden announced that Karine Jean-Pierre will replace Jen Psaki as White House press secretary later this month.  Said Biden of Psaki: “Jen Psaki has set the standard for returning decency, respect and decorum to the White House briefing room. I want to say thank you to Jen for raising the bar, communicating directly and truthfully to the American people, and keeping her sense of humor while doing so. I thank Jen her service to the country, and wish her the very best as she moves forward.”

Biden said of Jean-Pierre: “Karine not only brings the experience, talent and integrity needed for this difficult job, but she will continue to lead the way in communicating about the work of the Biden-Harris administration on behalf of the American people. Jill and I have known and respected Karine a long time and she will be a strong voice speaking for me and this administration.”

Jean-Pierre is currently the White House’s principal deputy press secretary and deputy assistant to Biden; she previously worked as the chief of staff for Vice President Kamala Harris’ 2020 presidential campaign. Jean-Pierre will also notably become the first Black and openly LGBTQ White House press secretary in history.

Psaki has served as the top spokeswoman of the administration since Biden’s inauguration; she is expected to depart the White House on May 13. The announcement comes after rumors that Psaki was in talks for a job with MSNBC.

President Biden approves disaster declaration for New Mexico due to devastating Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon wildfire

President Joe Biden has approved a disaster declaration for New Mexico due to a wildfire that’s been burning for weeks in the northern part of the state. Fire officials say the The Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire is just 20% contained, but has burned more than 160,000 acres. The blaze began about a month ago and is the result of two wildfires merging into one. The Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire is the largest presently burning in the United States.

Biden’s approval of the federal disaster declaration makes federal funds available for thousands of people affected in New Mexico’s Colfax, Lincoln, Mora, San Miguel and Valencia counties. The White House said the assistance includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs, and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses. It also includes other programs to help people and businesses recover.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement: “New Mexicans cannot wait for these fires to be extinguished to receive relief. That’s why I expedited the state’s request for emergency aid for individuals, and I’m grateful to President Biden for recognizing the urgency of the situation in our state.”

NBA announces suspension of Memphis Grizzlies wing Dillon Brooks for Game 3 against Golden State after flagrant foul on Gary Payton II

The NBA announced Thursday that Memphis Grizzlies wing Dillon Brooks has been suspended for Game 3 of their second-round series against the Golden State Warriors. Brooks was ejected from Game 2 after committing a Flagrant 2 foul on Warriors guard Gary Payton II, which resulted in Payton fracturing his left elbow. Payton is expected to miss at least three weeks with the injury.

The foul occurred early in Game 2, with Payton having a wide-open lane to the basket. When going up for a dunk, Brooks took him down with a hard hit to the head, and Payton fell hard to the floor. Warriors coach Steve Kerr said that Brooks crossed a line: “Playoff basketball is supposed to be physical. But there is a code that players follow where you never put a guy’s season [or] career in jeopardy by taking somebody out in midair and clubbing him across the head, ultimately fracturing Gary’s elbow … He broke the code. Dillon Brooks broke the code.”

Brooks is averaging a career-high 18.4 points per game this season, and he has started all eight playoff games the Grizzlies have played. Memphis will rely on reserve wings DeAnthony Melton and Ziaire Williams to fill in for Brooks.

Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green fined $25K by NBA for flipping off Grizzlies fans during Game 2

The NBA has fined Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green $25,000 for flipping off Memphis Grizzlies fans as he headed to the locker room in Game 2 of their Western Conference Semifinals series. Green went to the locker room in the second quarter to receive medical assistance after taking an elbow to the face, later returning to the game.

Green told reporters after the game: “If you’re gonna boo somebody who got elbowed in the eye and face running down blood, you should get flipped off. So I’ll take the fine. I’ll do an appearance and make up the money. But it felt really good to flip them off. You’re gonna boo someone that gets elbowed in the eye and blood running down their face? I could’ve had a concussion or anything. If they’re gonna be that nasty, I can be nasty, too. I’m assuming the cheers were because they know I’ll get fined.  Great. I make $25 million a year. I’ll be just fine.”

Green was previously fined $25,000 for using profane language toward a game official in March and has racked up nearly a million dollars in fines throughout his career.  He was ejected from Game 1 of the second-round series after hitting Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke in the head and pulling him down by his jersey.

Morgan Wallen to perform at Billboard Music Awards after being banned in 2021

Morgan Wallen will perform at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards later this month, a little over a year after footage of the country singer saying the N-word emerged, causing major backlash for the singer.

The Billboard Awards is set to take place on May 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and will mark the first performance at a major awards ceremony for Wallen since last year’s controversy saw him banned from that year’s Country Music Awards, American Music Awards and the Billboard Music Awards.

Video emerged of Wallen saying the racial slur back in February of 2021, just a month after the release of his second album, ‘Dangerous’. The musician was quickly dropped from radio stations and playlists, and suspended from his label Big Loud. However despite the controversy, Wallen saw a surge in album sales.  Wallen said in a statement at the time: “I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back. There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologise for using the word. I promise to do better.”

Wallen has definitely made a comeback; earlier this year he kicked off a North American tour in support of ‘Dangerous’, and last month he won ‘Album of the Year’ at the Academy of Country Music Awards.
